NOT MANY TEADERS.
Pittsburg Business in South America
Confined to a Few Men.
HAIMTENGINEANDBOATMAKERS
There Xever Was Much Trade, and it Has
Fallen Off in Ten Tears.
THE CITI CAX'T BOAST OP ITS EECOED.
James Bees & Son, the engine and boat
builders of this city, have just received an
order for two steamboat boilers and a pnmp
to be shipped to Barranquilla, South Amer
ica. The firm began work upon the order
yesterday, and will ship the product in
about six weeks.
"What does your trade amount to in a
year, and what has Pittsburg done com-men-inllr
with South American countries
within the past ten years?" was asked of
Captain Thomas itees by a dispatch re
porter. "The trade is not as extensive as some
Pittsbnrgers imagine. I only know of two
concerns in this city that have a regular
trade in the South American countries.
These are H. K. Porter & Co., the locomo
tive builders, and ourselves. Up until
.luint f, ty fin -aa im nnf nnmnpss in
4.1wuw ,. w i w j ..a ..few ... .......
this trade amounted to over ?5,000 per
month, xnis was in engines, doucj.,
pumps, etc Now the business does not
amount to more than $500 per month.
ENGLISH COMPETITION. 'r"4-
Tde decrease was caused by too much
competition from English manufacturers,
who knocked us out through high transpor
tation rates. The steamship rates from
New York are about four times the cost of
sending the stuff from Pittsburg to New
Tort by rail. The transportation by sail
ing vessels is about one-tbird less than on
steamship lines. Notwithstanding this
cheaper rate, we cannot compete with the
English on account of the difference in the
price of labor. The English manufacturers
have secured drawings of American work
and copied them. They have now got the
idea of light running steamboats, and have,
in a measure, stolen this trade from us.
Another bad feature of the trade is that the
Southern merchants want long credits.
"With some of them we have had to wait
five vears before we received our money.
"We could not stand this and had to quit it
They generally pay up, however, in lour or
five mouths.
"I think the visit of the Pan-American
delegates to the city will be productive of
good results to the town. It will have a
tendency to brace up the small trade be
tween Pittsburg and South America, and it
will yet assume enormous proportions. The
commercial relations between the Southern
people and ourselves are very pleasant and
the business only needs to be fostered. I wab
in South America for ten months, and put
in all mv time traveling from State to
State. I know what the people there think
ol the Americans, and if Pittsburg manu
factures cannot build up a good trade now
it is their own fault. We have an agent in
Barranquilla, "United States of Colombia,
and I am in hopes ot receiving a number of
large orders from him."
HIS TRADE PEBIODICAL.
H. K. Porter, the locomotive builder,
when seen, said: "We have a pretty good
trade with South American countries, but it
is periodical. About four weeks ago we ex
ported an engine to Central America, and
have had no orders since. "While I do not
think that the visit of the Pan-Americans
is going to throw direct bidders for
v.iini4-nc nf ihnnMLiida of dollars worth
nf stuff into the city, I believe
that it will stimulate trade between
this city and the South American
States. One of the delegates sat in my office,
and looking out on the river said: "Those
are the kind of boats we want on our Sonth
American waters. He took particular
pleasure to hunt up Mr. Bees, and have a
long talk with him about steamboats. This
is one wij in which the city will be bene
fited." The "Westinghouse Electric Company re
cently shipped a dynamo and other electri
cal apparatus to "Bio Janeiro, in Brazil.
They have erected a plant there, which is
now in operation. They have also a plant
running successfully in Havana. The air
brake and machine companies have also a
good trade in the South.
THE ADVANTAGES OF BITTING
Tour Furnishing; Good. From nn Exclnslve
Furnishing Goods Home.
The furnishing goods trade is an exclu
sive business in itself, and not a branch of
the drygoods house or trimming store. "We
claim to give more care and attention in se
lecting our goods than the drygoods buyer's
knowledge of the business would allow him
to do. "We study to give the people of our
cities nothing but the best and latest goods,
and to do this we keep ourselves constantly
posted on the latest fashions of this country
and Europe, and never allow any bnt the
leading houses to submit their goods for our
inspection. The display of goods in our
windows is evidence enough that they are
the correct style.
Nor do we hesitate to say thatother houses
are not slow in copying our ideas, as was
proven in their recent display of De Join
villes and light scarfs for eveningdress, just
as soon as we had proclaimed them the
proper thing.
Another important fact, when purchasing
at our store you never run the risk of hav
ing to wait on you a clerk from the ladies'
glove department, the dress goods depart
ment, the linen department, notion depart
ment, or from the many other departments
connected with a large dry goods store.
These -clerks certainly have no knowledge of
this line of business, and you suffer the in
convenience of waiting for them to find out
from the head of the department where the
goods are kept, and after making your pur
chase you are compelled to wait an endless
time for your package and change. Our
clerks are experienced furnishing men, and
you get your package and change promptly.
Also, we can always give you any informa
tion desired, as to what you ought to wear on
all occasions. We appeal to the public if we
are not entitled to the name the drygoods
house has so justly given us, "The Tony
Furnisher." WILL Pkice,

THE MUSEUM HEARINGS.
The Circnulan Lady's Story A Beautiful
Girl With Iler Hair Wnibed In Stale
Beer and Molasses.
The hearing in the "fake" museum cases
was called up before Magistrate McEenna
yesterday afternoon again. The interest in
the cases seems to be dying out, as not over a
dozen persons were present, and the majority
of these were show people or others more or
less interested.
When the cases were called A. Lovitsky
was the only one of the defendants who put
in an appearance. Major H A. Mo n tooth,
his attorney, was not there, and Mr. Lo
vitsky was compelled to face the representa
tives of the Department of Public Safety
alone. After Superintendent O'Mara and
Inspector McAleese had testified to the
condition Lovitsky's place was found
in, and the delendant's arrest, Miss
Jemimah Ambuster, a handsome young girl
with black hair and eyes, who was hired to
play the part ot the Circassian lady, was
called. She said she had been induced by
a friend to come to Pittsburg to work. She
saw an advertisement in a paper and an
swered it Lovitsky first told her she was
to act as a bodiless woman. She objected
to this operation. After some discussion
she agreed to allow her hair to be cut off
and her head prepared so as to represent a
Circassian.
The girl's description of the process
through which her head was put was rather
amusing, and created a large-sized smile on
the spectators. After cntting off her hair,
her head was washed in molasses and beer,
and after drying, was subjected to the use
of chemicals. Sne worked several weeks
and received no pay. She threatened to
leave several times, and told the proprietor
that she thought he was "running a tough
place."
Lovitsky was held in $1,000 bail for court,
and the hearing in the cases of Addison
Carlisle and William McNeil was post
poned until to-morrow, owing to McNeil's
absence from the city. r?
NO SEDUCTION IN FACES.
Traction Boad Offllclals Are Not Thinking
or a Chancre In Hates.
The annual stockholders' meeting of the
Pittsburg Traction Company will be held
Monday, November 18. The chief business
to be transacted is the election of directors
for the ensuing year. It is stated on the
authority of a prominent official that the
question of reducing through fares on the
line will not be discussed. The gentleman
said that, so far as his line was concerned,
there was nothing in the matter, and that he
was certain the reduction would not be
made.
The stockholders of the Citizen's Traction
Company will hold a meeting on the same
date. Only routine business will be trans
acted. Mr. James Verner, one of the direct
ors of the road, when asked if the reduction
in fares would be taken up, said:
"I hardly think so. In fact, I did not
know that a meeting was to be held; but if
it is, I am certain that the matter will not
be agitated. There has been considerable
talk about reducing the through fares to 5
cents, and it may be done soon, but not just
st present We have no intention of forc
ing a fight with rival companies, and I do
not care to say anything that may be misconstrued."
