THE WESTlSGHOUSE LIGHT IXEIBIT
The invitations to the reception to be ten
dered the Fan-American delegates at the
.llonongahela House Thursday evening
' "next were received by the Secretary of the
Chamber of Commerce yesterday aiternoon.
About 200 invitations will be issued. A
list of those who are to get them will be
made out by the Chairman of the commit
tee this morning, and they will be mailed at
once. There is a great demand for the invi
tations and quite a number of those who are
. expectineto receive one will be sadly dis
appointed. A meeting of the General Reception Com
mittee will be 1ield this afternoon. The
different tub-committees will report the
progress of the work. Details, etc. will be
' arranged, and a report of the Finance Com
mittee will also probably be read.
The display of the Westinghonse interests
in machinery hall will be something won
derful. Among the -different machines to
be displayed will be a 3,000 light alternate
irig current dynamo, which is the largest
machine of its Kind ever manufactured.
A DISPLAY OF LIGHTS.
On the topofthis dvnamo will be a pony
A. a machine for '15 lights. It is the
smallest electric light dynamo ever made in
this countrv. Other light machines will be
a"35arc light dvnamo. a 750 hght dynamo,
a 150 direct current lieht dynamo and a
motor generator. Most of these machines
will be running and a large number of
lights will be operated by them. A five
horse-power Tesla motor, operating a print
ing press, will be a very
attractive piece of machinery, proving the
laetthataltemating current dynamos can be
made a success. Souvenirs will be printed
on the printing press and presented to the
visitors.
A Westinghonse rotary engine, unique
among the inventions of modern mechanics,
will also be on exhibition. This is the first
rotarv engine ever seen in public, because
Mr. "Westinghonse has only lately com
pleted the invention. This rotary engine, a
350 horse-powef machine, will operate all
the electric dynamos. The Shallenberger
meter will be on exhibition, and its works
may be observed and examined.
IMITATION OF A BORDER.
An imitation of a stage light border will
also be shown with a stage light regulator,
demonstrating how the brilliancy of electric
lights can be decreased and increased. An
exhibition of lamp coil will also be made in
the display.
.There is a great possibility that the nat
ural gas display, which was to be the prin
cipal feature in the mechanical exhibition,
vjll not come off according to the pro
gramme of the committee. The latter haye
a misunderstanding with the Philadelphia
Company. The officials of the com
pany "sav they want to make
the exhibit a success, but are
not voluntarily doing anything about the
free use of their gas. One of the officials of
the .company when seen by a Dispatch
reporter, yesterday, said:
"I do not know anything about the
' proposed display. The committee has not
been to see me about the matter and I do
not know what they intend to ao. I was
'.always opposed to that kind of a display, as
I think it 'is considerable of a nuisance."
The street department turned a lot of men
loose yesterday afternoon on Dnquesne way.
"With a liberal use of a large how they soon
had the street looking as clean as a celluloid
.ooilar. -AIL. the side- streets leading to the
Exposition building will also undergo the
cleaning operation. ;
The work of decorating the building was
begun yesterday by Boeuigk Bros. A
scheme is on foot to have the building thrown
open to .the public on Saturday next, alter
the departure of the Fan-Americans.
In Memorlnm.
At a joint meeting cf the managers of
Carnegie Bros. & Co., Limited, and of Car
negie, Fhipps & Co., Limited, held at their
branch offices. 48 Fifth avenne, Fittsburg,
on October 3, 1889, the following resolutions
were adopted:
Resolved, That as this firm, in all its his
tory, has never been called upon to record a
loss so tragic as that which has deprived it
of its great manager. Captain William
Blchard Jones, so neither has it ever lost an
officer whose services were more valuable or
to whom it was more deeply indebted for
the success which has attended its opera
tions. 3esolved, That Valuable as the services of
Captain Jones have been, not only to us
but to steel manufacturers in general, the
remembrance of these fade away in the keen
Jrpangs of grief awakened in us by recollec-
,;-,. jytionsoi our mend, the man.
pf Resolved, That the history of steel manu
facture will record his name with those
j whose joint labors have brought the art to
' its present state of perfection, and in the list
L" a of men who have risen from the ranks
: b. . through the possession of indisputable
5.- genius to commanding positions as organ
ist iters and managers of masses of men in the
' industrial armies of this age, the highest
lrank must be accorded to Captain Jones.
'-' "Resolved, That to us, his employers and
v ; -friends, wbo knew him intimately throneh
many years of almost daily intercourse,
'. there is still left in our grief, though he is
, gone, 'the precious privilege of meditating
- upon a combination of manly qualities,
which constitute the real man, and which,
f " united in him, gave forth that indefinable
. ' but rarest quality, character; a hrave, jnst,
honest, transpatent sonl: a staunch, loyal
hearted, generous friend was he, whose ab
sence lrora us and from our councils we
to-day so deeply mourn.
Kesolved, That his life should have been
sacrificed in our service must ever hereafter
tinge our thoughts of the Edgar Thomson
' t - Steel Works with feelings of profound re
gret; and yet we would not forget that the
v' Commander fell at the head ot his men, at
the post of duty, amid the roar of the vast
' 4 establishment, which was his work, and
."which is his monument A heroic end was
- " - his. worthy of the soldier he was; for Cap-
lain tiones upu uc uciu which ub nuu
"conquered.
EBesolved, That the firm cannot forget the
faithful men who died or suffered with their
Cantain. It bees to thank the survivors and
to assure them that it appreciates, to the-
fullest extent, their devotion to duty; and;
the profound sympathy of the firm is hereby'':
.f-'!oflerea to Aira. J ones ana ner lamiiy, and to
' Athe families of those who were stricken by
the recent grievous accident
"Resolved, That these resolutions been-
- 'v'igro'ssed upon the minutes and copies for-
-swanied to the bereaved families. .
