The days of the depot hotel runners sre
past, in Pittsburg, Inspector McAleese
having, after a thorough investigation,
found that the attractions for the traveling
public to Yisit this city are greatly handi
capped by the rush made for each traveler
by'touters to take him to "the best hotel lor
the money." The Inspector continued: "It
look? bad enough to the stranger to be
grabbed by his collar immediately on his
arrival and rushed off as if he were
under arrest, and worse when two rival hotel
runners grab tbe visitor one by each arm,
making a spread-eagle of him, while a third
knocks their schemes out by seizing his
baggage which the average wayfarer is sure
to follow and thui perch the banner of vic
tory on the third hotel. All this is bad
enough, bnt when in their zeal for the
benefit of the hotels they work for, the run
ners seize a man and his wife and rush
them to different hotels I thought it Was too
much and had to be put a stop to.
THE LAW IS IMPERATIVE.
"I found some difficulty at first as one
hotel proprietor would say "he could not dis
continue his runners unless his rival in the
next block did the same. But when I ex-
plained that the order was imperative and
.all must stop, a very meager degree of satis
faction was expressed. I suppose one or two
of their volunteer touterswill have to be ar
rested if they show up around tbe stations,
but I tbink, on the whole, a man can in
''future come into Pittsburg over any line
without being molested. This goes into
effect at once."
With the abolition of the hotel runner
will come a muzzle on the gong which is in
dustriously slugged by an intelligent con
traband on the arrival of every train with
an energy and muscular force worthy of the
great and only Sullivan.
THE TRIANGLE MUST CO.
The bell, too, whose tintinabulations were
the terror of invalids and excruciating
agony to nervous people, will have its
tongue silenced effectually and will no
longer be the belle of the dinner bawl; al
though even the Police Bureau will find it
a -very difficult task to silence a belie.
The triangle will not have a corner left to
display its musical abilities in and quietude
like that snake story specimen of orni
thology the roc, will brood over all the
depots of Pittsburg.
Another abuse of the privacy which is
the rightof travelers is the boarding of trains
at available points close to the depot, such
as the Penn avenue crossing, by runners to
canvass the cars in the interest of hotels.
This will be taken in hand by the detectives
'and police of the various lines, so that Pitts
iburg will soon become a shining exception to
the general rule all over the country of har
assing the incoming travelers.
MONET FOR THE HOSPITAL.
A New-Plan to Raise Fundi for the Sontb
slde Institution.
The directors of the Southside Hospital
will meet next Monday evening to hear the
report of tbe committee appointed some
weeks ago to devise a plan to raise subscrip
tions for the benefit of the institution. The
committee consists of John Lewis, of the
Lewis Foundry and Machine Company;
"Wallace Frost, of the Bepublic Iron
Works, Secretary; James Fe'ker, of the
Thomas -Evans Manufacturing Company,
andJF. K. Gearing, the lumber dealer.
The committee, after meeting two or three
,tjmes.a.KMlJiave formulated a plan which
t thought to be the moscertelnal in its de
tail of any ever tried irr"connectioh -with
such enterprises. It is a unique scheme to
raise popular subscriptions for the hospital.
The idea is to map ont the Southside in sec
tions and place each member of the com
mittee in charge of a different section. The
manufacturers, their employes; the business
men, their clerks; organizations and socie
ties, and in tact every individual on the
Southside will be given an opportunity to
give something to aid a worthy institution.
The hospital has been constantly growing
in lavor ana useiuiness on tne southside.
Its capacity has been strained for several
wrcks. .Additional room had to be secured
some time ago and it is now all occupied by
patients. The board feels that the people
owe tbe institution their support, and ii the
hospital is not a success in the fnture it will
iztot be the fault of the board.

Inspectors Parakeen and Billingsby, of
the'Philadelphia division of tbe postal de
partment, arrived in the city yesterday. In
company with Postmaster Swan they in
spected the Semple building, where the
postmaster wants to locate.
The inspectors were well pleased with the
place, and will report favorably. The cost
ol the necessary repairs and remodeling of
the lower floor will be defrayed by the Sem-
?le estate. The lease will be for five years,
he Government is merelv a tenant at will
"?;in its present quarters in City Hall, and can
xacate on short notice.

The latest story is that an English syndi
cate is Working in Maine to buy up the
stone quarries and brickyards, and extend

"William Fiinn, of Booth & Plinn, said

quarries or brickyards, but was quite will-
'rnto be. "No," he added, reflectively, "I
haven't found any foreign sucker yet."

An application was filed in court yester
day for a charter for the Union Club of
Allegheny county, a social and beneficial
organization. The directors are William

the Lost Boata The Company Will Re
fuse Light Milpmeuts Yesterday.
The present rise In the river gave the coal
operators an opportunity to get about 5,000,
000 bushels shipped. The amonnt would
have been more than doubled but for the ob
structions at the Beaver bridge. There was
some talk around the wharf yesterday of a
feeling existing among the operators that
might prompt them to make an effort to de
stroy the false work under the Beaver
bridge by purposely running loaded barges
against it. The fact that four barges had
been sunk at the bridge helped to form a
foundation for tbe theory.
The operators seen yesterday hooted the
idea, however, saying that they would not
run the risk of losing their property for tbe
sake of knocking the false work down. The
channel under the scaffolding is less than
100 feet wide, and, the current being rather
swift, it is difficult for the boats to pass
through without strikiug one side or the
other. The indignation against the railroad
company for making no efforts to have the
obstruction removed, remains at a high
state. The bridge has been completed for
several weeks, and the company was notified
that a rise was expected at any time.
The operators declare that they will en
deavor to compel the railroad company to
pay for the coal lost at the bridge. This
loss is estimated at about 6,000, O'Neil &
Co. lost two barges; Forsythe & Blackburn
lost one and W. C. & A? Jutte lost one flat
of coke and one of coal.
A call was made yesterday at Superin
tendent E. Holbrook's office, but that gen
tleman was not in. His chief clerk said the
company could certainly not be expected to
pay for coal lost at the Beaver bridge, as
they have nothing to do with the building
of "the structure. The Keystone Bridge
Company has the contract for the bridge,
and the'v are said to be responsible for the
existing state of affairs.
The Allegheny river was rising last night
and the coal operators are preparing to make
more shipments.
A SAFE CURE.
Why the Tanlt In the Controller's Offlco Had
to be Jimmied.
The power of wind and air pressure has
been frequently demonstrated in political
conventions and other places where elo
quence has been subordinated to the efforts
of the orators to out-talk one another.
But yesterday afternoon, in the Controller's
office, an experiment in air pressure on the
safe in the inner office resulted in the dem
onstration that a jimmy Is a necessary piece
of furniture in the office. When the safe
was closed at 420 p. m. it was found neces
sary to reopen it; but although the combi
nation and the outer door worked all right,
the inner one resisted all efforts to pull it
open.
Assistant Controller John J. Davis said
it should be opened, as otherwise it might
subject Mr. Ed. Phelps, the Controller's
clerk, to inconvenience, and he labored for
over half an hour to pull the door open.
Officer Maschell, of the hall, with a curva
ture of the spine and a mighty effort, tried
and failed, and J. J. Davis, again baring
his big right arm, tackhd the door, but
without eflect
Finally a pinch bar was secured, and put
ting it through the handle of the door and
bearing upon tbe post, an opening was
made. Controller Morrow, in true lecture
room style, explained how the pressure of
circumstances and the outside atmosphere
were brought to bear upon the door through
shutting it violently and exhausting the air
within had produced a resistance of some
20 pounds to the square inch. The moral to
be derived is that burgUrs who wish to study
donble entry on the two doors of the Con
troller's safe should come well prepared.
A COLD-BLOODED SUGGESTION.
A Possibility of a Wife Murderer Making a
CInIm for DerEstntr.
An unusual question was raised yesterday
in the matter of the settlement of the estate
of JJn-JLnjic J'onfsf-wh-jrna. murdered by
her husband two years ago at Hew Turner
Hall. Mrs. Jones was a sister of Joseph
Cuneo.
Mr. James Flannery was .administrator of
Mrs. Jones' estate and John Marron, Esq.,
was Flannery's counsel. The question
raised was that Jones, tbe slayer, had an in
terest in the estate, but as Messrs. Flannery
and Marron had no desire to see him assert
his right they finished the business and got
a decree and the assets are now secured to
the children.
Mr. Beardon, who defended Jones, said
he badn't got anything for his services, but
he made no claim. It isn't likelv that
Jones will ever put in one anyhow, as he
has 10 years of prison life yet before him.
The estate is not large, and by the time he
is released the money will likely be spent
in the maintenance and education of the
children.

An enthusiastic meeting of the younger
alnmni members of the Phi Kappa Psi fra
ternity was held last night at the office of
Chas. Wv. Ashley, .Esq., No. 403 Grant street,
lor the purpose of organizing an alumni as
sociation of the fraternity in this city. Mem
bers were present from the following chap
ters: Pennsylvania Aloha. Beta. Zeta.
Iota, Kappa; Ohio Gamma, Michigan Al
pha, and District of Columbia Alpha. En
couraging letters were also read Irom several
members who were unable to be present. A
committee, consisting of Messrs. Chas. W.
Ashley, Albert J. Walker and Horace J.
Miller, was appointed to make the necessary
arrangements lor a banquet, to be held Ko
yember21. Many of Pittsburg's most prom
inent professional and business men are
members of this fraternity, and the associa
tion bids fair to be a prosperous one,

pretty and large for her age. The Alder
man had no doubt that an offense was com
mitted, bnt was satisfied as to the innocence
of the lads arrested and discharged them.
Sol Smith Russell Next Week.

new play, "A Poor Relation;" is said to be

A FAMOUS CATERER'S SEW DEPARTURE
John B. Schlosser, formerly one of the
proprietors of the Duquesne Hotel, and the
new owner of the Hotel Albemarle, will be
married during the last week of December
to a Miss Velker, of Washington, D. O.
The wife expectant is an heiress after a
manner, and is described as being one of
the most beautiful young women of Wash
ington. Mr. Schlosser was called upon by a re
porter for The Dispatch yesterday, but
he would give no information concerning
the coming union. He said that it was
only private to himself, and that when tbe
marriage occurred he would have no hesita
tion in giving the matter to tbe public
From another source, however, the reporter
secured information about tbe bride to be.
Almost every man about town in the city
knows Mr. Schlosser. For some years he
was one of the proprietors of the Hotel
Duquesne. He came to this city from the
Metropolitan Hotel, New York, about 1877,
and took charge of the dining room of the
Duquesne Club, which was then the only
social club of note in tbe city. Schlosser was
the boue of contention over which a split oc
curred in the club, and
the younger members left
it. He had a dispute with one of them, and
the case went before the Board of Directors.
The latter, backed up by the old members of
the club, sustained the steward. The young
men pulled out of the organization, and
formed the Pittsburg Club, which is still In
existence. At that time the Pittsburg Club
was about to move into the Blume building
upon the site of tbeir present quarters. The
new organization quietly worked a deal by
which they secured possession of the fixtures,
etc., of the old clubhouse on Penn avenue.
It was Mr. Schlosser wbo stirred up Pitts
burg to the present manner of conducting
restaurants in this city. He brought from
the old country the notion of first-class eat
ing honses, and the manner in which he
conducted the Duquesne restaurant was an
example to Pittsburg in general. Mr.
Schlosser went from the Duquesne Club to
the Dnquesne Hotel, and there established
his idea of what a hotel cafe should be. The
wonderful success of the Duquesne cafe is a
tribute to Mr. Schlosser's perspicacity.
WHO Tlf E BIUDE IS.
Miss Velker, whom Mr. Schlosser will
wed, is a daughter of tbe noted Fourteenth
street restaurateur of Washington, D..C.
He, for many years, conducted one of the
most fashionable and best patronized
restaurants of the national capital. He has
been dead 16 years, but left a fortune which
be acquired in the restaurant business. The
house was managed, after his death, byJ
juts, venter, woo later inarnea a gentleman
named'Felter.
Mr. Velker was the father of two beauti
ful daughters. One of them is betrothed to
Mr. Hugo Ziemann, who was the steward
of the White House untilabout three weeks
ago. At that time he left the President's
mansion to become the steward of the Hotel
Bichelieu of Chicago, at a munificent
salary. It is said that the weddings of
Messrs. Ziemann and Schlosser will occur
in Washington December 26, and will be
made society event'.
Miss Velker, it is reported by those who
know her family, will bring an addition
to the present comfortable fortune of, Mr.
Schlosser. The latter has decided to be
come the proprietor of .s practically new
hotel in this city, and on the occasion of the
return home of himself and bride will give
