Th? shades of night were falling fast, as
were.also the snores of a solitary "D. T"
in"cell 21. Central station, when a patriarchal-looking
gentleman -with lonj.flowinrj
'beard entered, and, sizing up the first re
porter he met for a detective, he unfolded a
tale of woe. His name was A. JIaxersky,
of 31 Haiel street, and he represented him
self as being a citizen, a man worth $10,000
in real estate and the father of five boys.
The three youngest boys, aged 19, 15 and
13, were the causes of his tribulation, and,
in order to prevent their losing every ves
tige of the religions training which he had
so carefully inculcated, be demanded that
the Hebrew dramatic exhibition in the
Forbes street Turner Hall be suppressed.
A LIBERA! ALLOWANCE.
He claimed that the boys had asked and
received 25c each to go" to the Bijou Mu
seum, but Instead the v attended the Semitic
drama so lately introduced.
Being -asked his reason he replied that
when .a few nights ago he called his sons to
evening prayer the boys replied that there
wasn't anybody to pray to, asking the old
gentleman if he bad ever seen God, or what
he knew about Him, anyhow. The horrified
parent immediately concluded that the
drama was the source of the atheistic, an
archistic and revolntionary ideas, as well as
being 75c ahead of the game. He therefore
demanded the immediate suppression of the
Hebrew drama before the religious princi
ples of the boys were entirely obliterated.
MONEY AK OBJECT TO HIM.
It was gently suggested that the crushing
opera tionsof the mimic world behind the foot
lights would require time and trouble and
necessitate some expense, at which he threw
up both hands, and demanded where his
rights as a citizen were. As for paying ont
one cent he would see the whole police force
and the family further first, and be would
find means to prevent the youngsters going
by stopping off their supplies, forget
ting the good old fashions of avoiding
crawling under the canvas, by carrying
water for the elephants and doing chores for
the property man. He became somewhat
disorderly after this, and was ordered.out of
the station by Chief Brown.
THE AMERICUS CLUB'S TBIP.

Sharp To-BIorrow Morning.
The final arrangements for the Americas
Republican Club's trip to Warren, O., were
made by the committee yesterday afternoon.
The club will assemble at their rooms to
morrow morning at 8:30, and, preceded by
the Grand Army Band, will march to the
Union depot by way of Wood street, Fifth
avenue, Smithfield and liberty streets. At
the depot a special Pullman train will be
ready to carry the club to Warren. The
train will leave at 9.30 sharp. The train
will make two stops between Pittsburg and
Warren, one at Bochester and the other at
Kenwood.
Upon the arrival of the club at War
ren, the members will be escorted to
dinner, after which they will parade
and escort the distinguished visitors to the
wigw m. At the conclusion of the meeting
the club will at once' proceed to the train
and start lor Youngstown. Here they will
dc met Dy tne -loung jnen s republican
Club and the Foraker Club and will be es
corted to the residence of Hon. C. H. An
drews, where the Americus Club will ten
der that gentleman a serenade. A banquet
will be given them by the young ladies of
Youngstown. A parade of the clubs acting
as an escort to the Americus will be given
preceding the meeting in the Opera House.
Considerable time and money are being
expended in decorating the interior and ex
terior of the train. The engine will be
beautifully decorated and the train will be
one of the finest that ever left Pittsburg.
General Hastings and other prominent
members of the club will accompany it and
speak at the meetings. Governor Poraker,
through bis private secretary, telegraphed
yesterday:
The Governor directs me to express his grati
fication at the cordial and enthusiastic show
ing by the Americus Club in his success upon
all occasions, and feels that their proposed
trip will result in great good to the cause.

Father Otten, of Sbarpsbnrg, Takes Charge
of a New ParUh,
Et- Bev. Bishop Pbelan has just ap
pointed one of the most able priests of the
diocese, Bev. Father John Otten, to the
pastorate of the new St. Peter's church at
Tarentum. He is the first priest to be sta
tioned there. Father Otten is a member of
the order of the Holy Ghost. As the bishop
did not have a priest to supply the church,
he applied to Father Strub, Superior of the
Order, lor one. Father Otten succeeded
Father Meyers at the St. Mary's Church at
Sharpsburg two "years ago. He has gained
the reputation of being the best German
pulpit orator in the State. He has preached
;"airfnearly all the leading German churches
'Jlin.the two cities. He is master of a number
JoHoreign languages, notably French. His
Inejtcongregation are nearly all French and
Germans. His place at Sharpsburg was
filled by Father John Bart, of the Catholic
college.

COAL BOATS CAN'T GO OUT.

Now Shippers Indignant.
There was considerable activity among
the coal operators yesterday, caused by a
rise in the river, which reached the stage of
ten feet at 1 o'clock. It was not expected
that they would get a coalboat stage of
water. When it came the operators were
disgusted to find that the obstructions at the
Beaver bridge would prevent them shipping
one-third of the 12,000,000 bushels in the
harbor.
O'Heil & Co. sent out 40 barges with the
steamers Fred Wilson, Dick Fulton, Belle
McGowan and Little Fred. Joseph Wal
ton & Co. sent the Sam Clarke, Coal City,
Nellie Walton and I. NBunton to Cincin
nati and the Joseph Walton to Louisville
with 30 barges. W. H. Brown's Sons sent
35 barges, and Thomas Fawcett, John A.
Wood & Sons, Horner & Jtoberts, S. S.
Crump, George Lisle & Sons and Charles
Jutte sent out small tows.
Word was received at 2 o'clock that the
Charles Jutte had sunk two barges at the
Pittsburg and Lake Erie bridge at Beaver.
When the boat went through the passage
under the scaffoldings the swell from an
other boat threw her in against the ialse
pier. The shock carried away a part of the
pier and sunk two boats. "The obstruction
was soon removed and the other boats passed
through all right.
Xhe coal men are in a high state of in
dignation over the condition of affairs at
Beaver. It is claimed that had the river
been clear the entire 12,000,000 bushels now
ready for shipment would have been sent
out, but owing to the great risk not more
than 4,000,000 bushels will be shipped. A
complaint has been filed with the Secretary
of War against the railroad company.

A Woman and Her Children Living In a
Shanty Boat Without a Fire.
Mrs. Daniel Douglass, who lives in the
rear of No. 4022 Liberty avenue, called at
the office of the Humane Society yesterday
and related a pitiful story to Agent Dean.
She said she had lived happily with her
husband, who is a machinist in the Pitts
burg and Lake Erie" shops, for many years.
They bought a house and lot in the Fast
End, and had it nearly paid for, when Sir.
Douglass began to neglect his family. He
applied for a divorce, on the grounds of
cruelty. The courts refused the divorce,
and he then deserted bis family.
Mrs. Douglass was about to enter suit
against her husband for desertion, when he
agreed, to pay her $20 & month. About a
year ago Douglass ceased to send his wife
money. Since then she has been in poor
circumstances. Last spring Constable Ban
der, of conspiracy fame, put her out on the
street one cold, rainy day, because she could
not pay the rent. She is now living in a
small shanty on the rear of a lot on Liberty
avenue, and has no stove. She says she nor
her children have bad a cooked meal in
eight weeks. She tried to earn a living for
some time by sewing, but did not succeed.

A STATEMENT OP DELINQUENT TAXES
Chief Clerk TorrenceoftheCity Treasurer's
office, yesterday completed the annual state
ment of the taxes assessed in each ward of
the city, with the amount paid on the March
and September installments, the amount
turned over to the Delinquent Tax Collector
lor collection, and the statement of the
water and business tax. The water tax
statement only includes the first twentv-
three wards of the city, the balance being
Souths ide wards which receive their supply
frm a private corporation.
The business tax is not divided into wards,
but the whole city is included in one set of
ngures as loiiows: Total business tax levied,
as per duplicate, $218,461 18; collected by
City Treasurer, $170,228 92; turned over to
the Delinquent Tax Collector, $48,232 26.
About 80 per cent of the city taxes paid
were paid in the March collections, which
is about the same proportion shown to have
been paidin previous years at that time, al
though this year the sum is larger, owing to
the increase in the valuations by the Board
of Assessors. The March collections for
1888 were $1,092,342 25; this vear, $1,099,
71175. September collections, $1888, $1,093,
864 40; this year, $1,100,564 09.

Sir. Wfghtmnn'S Heavy Bnslness Compelled
Him to Resign.
The resignation of J. S. "Wightman from
Common Councils, was still the topic of
considerable comment yesterday. George
Booth, Assistant City Clerk, said that he
knew Mr. "Wightman had repeatedly asked
him to notify him if his presence was abso
lutely necessary to secure a quorum, as his
business engagements were snch that he
could not attend. Mr. Booth felt confident
that this was the real reason lor Mr. "Wight
man's resignation, as stated in Council on
Monday.
A Peculiar Carriage Accident.
A pair of horses attached to a close car
riage ran offon Penn avenue yesterdayafter
noon. "When nearing Thirteenth street the
pole of the carriage was forced through the
window of a cable car, and stuck between
the two levers. The car could not be stopped,
and the carriage was consequently dragged
a block before it was dislodged from the car.
