XGEEAT OIL GUSHER.
Petroleum Struck on the Arbuckle
Farm in Stowe Township
WITHIN FOUR MILES OF THE CITY.
It is Flowing 700 Barrels a Day and the
Shell Only Cracled.
CflAETIERS .CREEK IS
EAISBOW-HUED
"To liim that hath shall he given," etc.
Out oi 100 observant people 40 years of age.
99 -will believe at least that much of sacred
'writ is true, for their experience has veri
fied it, and the unquoted end of the sen
tence will also receive the same percentage
of assent. The Arbnckles heirs struck it
rich on Monday evening, hut not until yes
terday did the public begin to pet onto the
significance of the strike. They could
scarce conceive that a 700-barrel petroleum
vrell was spouting within four miles of the
Court House. Up a rough and ragged ra
vine leading from Chartiers creek, about
a mile south of the mouth of the creek, the
oil flowed in torrents at intervals, coloring
the creek with $1,000 worth of iridescent
hue. The distance to the well by wagon
road is perhaps a mile lurther, but "as the
crow flies" it is not more than four miles
from the court house, and the spot might be
seen from the top of the tower, perhaps.
The well is in the 45 line, said one of the
drillers, the line extending across the river
in the neigbborhood oi the mouth ot Woods'
run in Allegheny. The depth of the well is
variously stated at 2,000 and 2,200 feet. The
band has been merely penetrated, the shell
of the rock only being broken. One of the
men at work said that the flow might or
might not be increased by deeper drilling.
The output is variously estimated at COO to
. 700 barrels a day, and some Bay it is 50 bar
rels an hour. It is flawing by heads, and
ut one time was timed and there came 11
barrels in ten minutes. There is great abun
dance ot gas, and the tank being lull, the
pas throes made a commotion that sent oil
in spray several rods lrom the tank.
SHOES GREASED FOR KOIHISG.
You could get vonr shoes greased by
walking through the grass 50 feet from the
well. There was no attempt made at con
cealment, and it was a good day for livery
stable men at Chartiers, rigs being in more
request as the day grew. The only people
not allowed near the well are coon hunters
with their torches and lanterns. If you
don't mind climbing a steep hill and being
covered with beggar lice and Spanish
needles you can get up to tbe hill from
Chartiers creek in a few minutes on foot.
As an evidence ot how little is known
even by" geologists and people whose busi
ness it is to know something about oil and
gas bearing rock, a short distance west
of the Arbnckles well is one on the
Clever farm, which was supposed to be
much better territory and though this well
is deeper than the Arbuckles, gas hardly
sufficient to supply two boilers was found,
while a fev rods still further west is a good
well on the same farm, that has been pro
ducing oil for months. Still west of this is
the iloore gas Tell, which did not come up
to expectations, and on strength of tbe dis
appointment leases westof it wereabandoned.
Scarcely had this been done when the Fort
Pitt Company struck a well nearly a mile
still further west on the Diep farm, which
alter a month from date of strike is still
putting out 1,000 barrels of oil a week and
rt1s but 1,400 leet deep. It was bored for
gas, but a revenue of $150 a day isn't bad
consolation lor the disappointment.
IT TVAS TKOTJBLESOME "WORK.
The Arbuckles' well has had an eventful
history. Work was begun in April. At a
depth of 1,000 feet a slanting fissure in the
roct was struct, ana alter a protracted enort
to straighten a crooked hole it was aban
doned, the rig readjusted and a new bore
begun 20 feet away. After the second hole
was well on the way the tools were lost in it,
and then followed a five weeks' fishing job.
People in the vicinity say that Fred Lan
inger has for year stated there was
either oil or gas in the ravine. "When tired
huuting he would sit down and meditate,
and if not startled out of his reverie by the
gambols of a squirrel on the brink of ruin he
would hear labored sounds in the bowels
ol the earth. At times they resembled
the gurgling of some fluid, like the kechug,
kichugof hard cider from a jug, and at
others like the ..labored breathing of some
subterranean monster who was struggling
ior more room. As Sir. Lauinger has been
saying so for jears, some people who
laughed at him now begin to think he may
have been an unconscious seismometer.
The oil is considered equal to that of
"Washington county. The Gufiey people
control a large amount of territory m the
neighborhood. The well is in the Gordon
sand, and is the largest yet struck in the
Crafton field. H. S. Stewart, the contractor,
find his men were hustling yesterday to take
care of the oil, and at noon "the second tank
was almost completed, and at 12:55 p. M.
. the United Pipe Line Company made con
nection and soon alter the distressful waste
of oil was stopped.

That the comine; winter will witness an

it already strongly indicated. The Califor

winter and early sprinp months, and there
will also be excursions to Mexico in
January, February and March. Send to

THEIE'KEW GaS MAIN'.
The Philadelphia Company's 36-Inch Lino
Bclnc Completed.
The officials ot the Philadelphia Company
expect to have their new SG-mch line from
Telford to Niblock, a distance of about 1$
miles, completed between the 1st and 5th of
next month. "When the line is finished it
will have a greater capacity than all the
other lines in tbe held put together, ine
company is laying abont 500 feet per day.
and abont one-third of the line is. down.
"When the small lines are turned into 'the
large 36-inch main there will be more than
a sufficient quantity of gas for consumers.
It is expected that the howl about a shortage
of gas will cease in consequence this winter.
An official ot the company stated yester
day that the complaint among iron manu
facturers and other consumers about a
shortage of gas was wrong, and the short
supply was the fault of the consumers them
selves. "When the 36-inch main is in opera
tion the same trouble will be experienced
unless the consumers change their pipes.
"When the company increases the size of
their pipes the mills must do likewise. Some
time ago one mill in this city ordered the
cas shut off after laying their own pipe line.
They had been asked to enlarge their pipes,
and refused. They put in their own gas,
bit found in the end that they would have
to repipe the mill. This was done and
there was no further trouble about a short
supply.
MISCHIEVOUS CABLE CARS.
How They Sling Stones nt People's Heads
nod Smash Windows.
As George JJassey was proceeding along
Fifth avenue, near the corner of Market
street, yesterday a small stone flew past his
face with lightening rapidity and crashed
into the show window of Hugus & Hacke's
drygoods store, making a round hole like
that caused by a pistol bullet Massey com
plained toJJOfficer Brennan that some one
had thrown the stone at his head, but in
vestigation proved that the real culprit was
one ot the cable cars which had passed a
few seconds before. The stone had fallen
from one of the city gravel carts into the
track of the cars, and the trucks striking it,
propelled it catapult-wise through the win
dow. This accident is of very common occur
rence, and the officer pointed out three
other smashes in the Hugus & Hacke win
dows from the same cause. These windows
are of valuable French plate glass, and
Messrs. Hugus & Hacke rate them at over.
$150 each. Utber houses along Filth ave
nue complain of similar smashes in their
windows, but have been in the habit of as
cribing the damage to the ubiquitous small
boy.
TBE SfiW TEUCK HERE.
Superintendent Evans Says the Department
Will Take It.
Superintendent Evans, of the fire depart
ment, stated yesterday that he had received
notice that the new Warwick fire truck was
at the Pittsburgh transfer station and as
soon as the Pennsylvania Railroad moved
it down to Liberty street the department
would receive it. He laughed at the story
published yesterday that they would not
take the truck because it was not ready for
them at tbe end of the contracted time. The
new truck will be placed in No. 3 engine
house and the one now in use will be
stored.
The new truck is of handsome finish. It
only measures 36 feet from the tip of the
tongue to the rear ot the longest ladder. It
weighs onlv 5,190 pounds, including lad
ders and all equipments. Two horses can
easily take it to almost any part of the city.
The old truck weighs 11,000 pounds and
four horses are required to haul it. One
man can throw the ladders to the top of
most any of the high buildings in the city
within a minute and lower them in less
time.

Bandmaster Innes Distinguishing Himself
at tbe Exposition.
The closing week of the Exposition is
proving by long odds the most brilliant, as
it certainly will prove the most profitable,
of the season. Kot only are the attendant
crowds larger, but they are better enter
tained than at any time since the exhibition
opened. It is essentially "Musical Week."
Conductor Innes having something new in
store ior the patrons of the show at each of
the four daily concerts, and it is safe to as
sert that never have Pittsburgers enjoyed
such a prolonged season of good music as
the one now closing.
To-day some of the music from the II
Trovatore will be presented. To-morrow
evening Beethoven's symphony will be
given.
