OYSTER'S OLD STAKD.
The McCleary Eod and Gun Club
Yields 13 Victims to the Law.
TEE! COMPLETE BAB UflEARTHED,
The Scared Proprietors Jump From a
Second-Story Window.
MIKE SCAKLOK'S TOUGH EXPEBIEXCE
A speak-easy kept by Joseph Anderson
and another man named McCann, at the
corner of Market and Water streets, Oyster
Paddy's old plice, was raided by tbe police
yesterday afternoon, and 13 men were, cap
tured. The raid was conducted by Inspector
McAleese, Roger O'JIara, Detectives Goul
son, FiUjerald, Carrigau, Captains Silvus
and Bropby, and a number of patrolmen.
It has been Known to the police that a
. sneak-easv was being carried on at thisplace
for soma time, but they could never secure
an entrance, although several attempts were
nude. The place was conducted on the club
system, being known as the McCleary Rod
and Gun Club, and each customer
was supplied with a kev. "When the
officers went to the house yesterday
tbey lotind it locked up tight, but they
knew there were several parties insiiie.
After several efforts to get in, and not daring
toWakopen a door, one of the officers
started ofT to send in a fire alarm, hoping
by this stratagem to cause the inmates to
open a door.
OXE DOOB LEFT TOXOCKED.
But before this was done Detective Coul
son managed to find a door unlocked in tbe
rear of the house and entered. The others
soon followed and they soon had possession
of tbe house.
Liquor in large quantities was found,
bottled beer and whisky on ice, ready for
n,e. and a reirnlar. wcll-kent bar. in con
nection with which a poker outfit was evi,
dentlv conducted. The nen in the house
stampeded when the officers entered and
three ot them jumpea irom sccouu-siury
windows. Anderson and JlcCann were two
of those who jumped. The former jumped
out on "Water street, and was soniewhat in
jured, but managed to crawl away and hide.
McCann made ins escape, but it is expected
will be captured soon. Anderson returned
to tbe place about an hour after the raid,
supposing all the officers had gone, but
Detective Carrigan had remained behind
for the purpose, and Anderson walked right
into hi& arms. ,
Anderson was recently released from the
workhouse? w here he was sent ior bis qod
nectioa with the trial of Paddy McGraw
for the murder of Tiny Sloan" in Oyster
Paddy's saloon, where Anderson was .bar
keeper. He bears a bad name in police
circles, and so does his partner, McCaun.
An iuiormation for illegal selling will be
entered against both men by Inspector Mc
Aleese to-day.
TIIEr TCT TJP FORFEITS.
The men who had been caught in the
place put up lorfeits for their appearance
and were released. They gave their names
as James Brown, Thumas Williams, John
Green, Richard McCabe, William Wilkison,
William Bennett, William Brown, George
2esbit, Joseph Bradden, J. S. Willison, J.
R. Oliver, James Ferguson.
The man who gave his name as John
Green is a police officer, who has been under
suspension lor some time. He tried to
escape when he saw the officers, but was
caught and taken to the station along with
the rest. He will be discharged from the
force for his conduct yesterday. -
Yesterday morning Michael Scanlon and
Baldy Brough got drunk in a Second ave
nue speak-easy and then went out on the
street to fight. During this argument
Brough was laid out with a beer bottle, with
which Scanlon pounded him over the head
and broke bis nose. After the fight Scanlon
staggered up as far as the Panhandle Rail
road crossing and leaned against a freight
car. ' Just as he did so the train moved and
Scanlon fell; his band being outstretched to
save him caught the rail just in time for one
ot tbe car wheels to pass over it, cntting off
all tbe fingers. Scanlon's friends took him
to tbe Mercy Hospital a few minutes later a
soberer man.
LEDISG THE METHODISTS.
The Bntlcr Street School Shows Up Well in
Mienionary Collections.
The Butler Street Methodist Episcopal
Sunday School subscribed f373 85 yesterday
x for the cause of foreign missions. This sum
is unprecedented in the history of Sunday
school collections in this denomination in
the country.
Six years ago the Sunday school and
church gave 5400. The marked growth in
the missionary subscriptions at the Butler
Street M. E. Sunday School is owing to the
unremitting labors oi Mr. S. Hamilton, who
has been superintendent for the past six
years. His energy has not been concen
trated merely to develop the financial dona
tions, bntalso to attain to the highest pin
nacle in numerical strength. There are now
enrolled some 1,200 children on the books.
These 1,200 scholars have subscribed on an
average over 90 cents apiece.
This increase over former years has been
accomplished under a great strain. On
every hand there have been improvements
in the property, and within the last six
years at least 520,000 has been subscribed
for beautifying and enlarging the church
and school.

The Hires of the Church Administered to
Twenty Ex-Lutherans.
Yesterday morning Bishop Phelan con
ferred the sacrament of confirmation upon
gome 180 persons in St. Michael's Catholic
Cnrch, Sonthside. Of these 1G0 were chil
dren and the remainder Germans, who have
become converts to Catholicity. The church
'was beautifully decorated with flowers and
the banners of the various confraternities.
In the afternoon the Bishop proceeded to
St. Joseph's Church, on Mount Oliver,
where he administered similar rites to a
great many, including several German con
' verts. All these Germans have been lately
received into the Catholic church, and dur
ing the past few months hive been under
tbe spiritual direction of the Passionist
Fathers. It is owing to the strenuous efforts
which tre P36sionists have been making
this year and last that the great number of
converts is due. The Germans belonged
principally to the Lutheran persuasion.
AKOTflEB ITALIAN MISSION.
Tbe Consrerallon In This City Growing;
Larger Each Week.
Another Italian Mission will be held in
this city. At yesterday morning's service
in his church Rev. Father Giacomo Anno
vazzi, the Italian priest, announced to his
congregation that a missionary father from
Hew York would arrive in the city to-day
or to-morrow and bold semi-missionary
services. The latter will be held in the
church in the, basement of St. Paul's Ca
thedral each evening. The congregation is
crowing weekly, and the many Catholic
Italians -who had fallen away from grace
are being brought back to tbe church. The
congregation has grown so large that it was
found necessary to have two masses each
Sunday.

BOOrSEASON" OPENING.
The Wiry A cent Ready to Go Forth and
Tackle the Earth A Business That Van
Same People Very Well.
"The book agent is a godsend to the pub
lic," said the manager of an instalment
house yesterday. "There is many a man
occupying a prominent position to-day who
never would have attained sufficient educa
tion to put him there, were it not for the
book solicitor's importuning in placing be
fore him ' the literature he required. It is
hard to understand the distaste there is
among really competent solicitors to take
np the book trade. There is no reason why
it should not be as respectable as the occu
pation of any other commercial solicjtor or
drummer, and it can be made to pay just as
wcll-as other drumming work. Just now
we want good men to sell Bibles on the in
stalment plan and we cannot get them."
'"On what conditions ,do you sell Bibles
on this plan?" x
"Well, take a 514 family Bible. When
the agent takes an order for this edition, he
arranges with the purchaser to pay say $2
down on delivery and 52 every month until
it is paid for. A contract is signed .under
which the' book is leased to tbe purchaser
and it remains our property until paid for.
Our agents work -among the middle class of
people, and it is very seldom indeed that-a
Bible is returned on our hands owing to
non-fulfillment of contract.
"How do you pay your agents?"
"Always on commission. They get 25
per cent on the amount ot the sale and 10
per cent for collecting outstanding instal
ments alterward. A fairly intelligent man
can easily earn 550 per week, and you can
see that "on this commission, if he sells but
one Bible a day.he can make $20 per week."
The book selling season may be said to
have fairly opened. With the return to
town of holiday seekers the book agent
girths up his loins and enters the market
lor theiest selling books. The merchant
and manufacturer,, professional man and
storekeeper know of his coming with tbe
fall of the leaf, and while putting an ad
ditional knot on his purse strings, hardens
his heart against the blandishments of his
tormentor, and glances askance at the
daprier young man who enters unannounced
with the request for "two minutes conversa
tion, if yod please."
While the ordinarv run of boot solicitors
are perhans possessed with too much assur
ance, there are many men of fine address
and good manners engaged in the business
whose natural acntcness and knowledge of
men and things stand them in good stead.
Such men as these latter are in receipt of
incomes all the way from 52,500 to 515,000
per annum, the latter figure representing
the salary of Mr. Fowkes, Scnbner's agent,
lor the sale of the Encyclopcedia Brittanica.
Men whose names have become historical in
American annals were at one period of their
existence solicitors for publishing houses or
'book agents' as, for example, Washington,
Garfield, Grant and James G Blaine, and
the'great Napoleon during his early career
sold books for a livelihood.
AN OLD LAWYER GONE.
Wllllnm ulcCullougb Darlington Diei at tho
Abo of 72.
On Saturday night death removed one of
the oldest inhabitants of Pittsburg from the
scene of his labors. Mr. Wm. McCullough
Darlington had been ailing for over two
years and had been unable to leave his
home ever since he received the new Pitts
burg Court House in behalf of the people.
Hcwas a member of the Pittsburg Bar
Association longer than any of his
associates.
Mr. Darlington was born in Pittsburg in
1815. His father was Benjamin Darling
ton, a Qaaker, who resided in Pittsburg,
and the maiden name of his mother was
Miss Agnes McCullough. He received a
complete education in the Jefferson College,
now the Washington and Jefferson College,
and. then studied law under Richard Biddle.
He'practiced at the bar until 1856. when he
retired from public life and devoted him
sel t to his books.
When he married Mary Carson O'Hara
he received 'a considerable dowry with his
wile, and this, along with his own money,
was so advantageously invested that at his
death he was worth probably 51,000,000.
They have three children, one boy and two
girls.
Mr. Darlington was of a retiring disposi
tion, and an inveterate bookworm. He
would read in his library for hours, and had
collected the finest private librarv west of
the Allegheny Mountains. He has col
lected at least 11,000 books. His favorite
study was early American history, and
during the latter days of his iife, he was
busily engaged writing historical accounts
of these early times. Sickness put a stop
to his work, and none of his manuscripts
have yet been published.
Mr. Darlington had been ailing for the
last two years, and at last succumbed to a
variety of stomach tronbles. His funeral
will take place on Tuesday afternoon at 3
o'clock.
THE HAKTST FEAST.
A Pretty Service Observed In the Trinity
Lutheran Church.

of thanksgiving. Rev. Dr. Goettman, the

afternoon Be'v. David S. Kennedy, of the
First Presbyterian Church of Allegheny,
talked to the children on the missionary
spirit. Holy communion was administered
after that service. In the evening a praise
service was held, in which music was the
chief feature. An address was delivered
by Rev. W. E. Main. Songs of rejoicing
were a feature of all the services of the day.

Chief Brown Announces tbe Positions
Under the Kew Eegime.
SOME CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE.,
A Force of laddies Promised That Will Do
Great Work at Fires.
AN ERKOE OF DE. MEKCUE'S CORRECTED
The complete list of the city firemen as
they will be under Chief Brown's reorgani
zation, which goes into effect to-morrow,
was given out by Chief Brown yesterday,
and is printed below. The list shows quite
a number of changes among the old men
who are retained, as, for instance. Captain
William Richardson, of'No. 4engine com
pany, is transferred to the same position in
No. U, while Captain John Lennix, of that
company.-takes Richardson's place In No.
4; Captain George.Kipg, of No. 13,istran
erred .to .No. Z, to the same position; John
Wrigley, stoker on No. C, is transferred to
No. 4, and numerous other chancres' have
been made in the various positions through
oul the entire department. Under the re
organization each company has a lieutenant
who, as Ju all disciplined organizations,
ranks next to the captain, that rank for
merly belonging to the engineer.
In regard to the changes made Chief Bro wn
simply said: "Such changes as have been
made were for the benefit of the ser
vice. We expected to have a great improve
ment, and the men have been placed where
we think they will do the most good."
The only person who was dropped from
the list and reinstated was Isaac Craig, of
No. 10. He was dropped'by Dr. Mercur by
mistake. The Doctor got his lists mixed,
and Craig's name appeared as incapacitated,
but he appealed to the Chief, showing his
papers of examination to be perfect, and he
was reinstated. The firemen and the posi
tions they are to occupy are as follows:
