is personal, it does not involve the firm of
which he is Treasurer.
A passenger train on the Baltimore and
Philadelphia rnad collided with an engine
coming in an opposite direction at about 1:30
o'clock yesterday afternoon near the (Sixth
avenue crossing in West Wilmington. Fire
man Edward Lyle, of Newark, Del, was
killed. No other person was injured.
The striking block miners at Brazil, Ind..
visited the Jumbo mine yesterday. Some of
the miners agreed not to return. The majority
of the "blacklegs" will not stop. They wero
greeted with unpleasant epithets, and in some
cases stones were thrown at them. No one
was hurt. An unsuccessful attempt was made
to get the men at work at No. 10 to quit.
Grand Rapids and Holland, Mich., busi
ness men are proposing to run a canal from the
former cltv to Holland and Late Michigan, at
& probable cost of 2,000,000. The Holladd route
is the shortes and easiest for Grand Rapids to
connect wilh Lake Michigan. A committee
composed of member of the Board of Trade
fcnd otber wealthycitizens or Grand Rapids and
Holland will fully investigate the route.
A boiler used in a qnarry at Wrie'ntsville,
Pa, exploded with terrific force about 1130
o'clock yesterday morning. Mrs. Lemuel
Barnes was killed instantly. Her head as
blown from her body. Her husband had his
skull fractured, and cannot live. A small build
ing was blown to atoms. Fragments of the
boiler were thrown two blocks. Nothing but a
hole iu the ground marks the spot on -vhich the
boiler stood.
The Non-Partisan Women's Christian
Temperance Union, of Minne:ota, has derided i
toueciarc irs independence, xne ainerences
that let! to the formation of the Non-Partisan
Women's Christian Temperance Union in
Minneapolis were augmented by the action oi
the State Convention at Dulnth, which de
clared that non-partisans would not again be
recognized, and have at last come to a crisis iu
open rebellion.
Archibald W. Brown, the attorney for
Frank Woodruff, alias Black, one of the Cronin
Suspects, made application yesterday afternoon
to Judge Baker for a writ of habeas corpus for
Woodruff. Woodruff based his right to a dis
charge from jail on the ground that two terms
of the Criminal Court had gone bv without his
being put on trial. Judge Baker fixed the
bearing for Monday morning, and ordered that
State's Attorney Longenecker be notified
thereof.
Three more sealing schooners have arrived
In port at Victoria, H. C. They are the British
schooners Favorite and the American schooner
Bessie Ruter, belonging in. Astoria. The
Favorite brnucht 1,700 seals. The Rush was
sighted Dy hunters while out iu canoes, bnt the
vessel was not interfered with. The Theresa
was boarded, but as no green skins were found
she was merely ordered out of Bearing Sea,
She brought 625 skins.
The firm of Gibson. Parish & Co., of Chi
cago, w'.nch was forced to apply for a receiver
on the 31st of August on account of a inUtake
of their head bookkeeper in figuring up the
assets of the firm, notified the police to-day to
airest as an embezzler Harry E. Clifford, the
man who. it was at first thonght, had merely
mads a clerical error. It has been discovered.

The steamer Alameda, from Sidney and
Auckland via Samoa and Honolulu, arrived at
San Francisco at noon yesterday. Admiral L.
A. Kimbcrly and staff, who have been at Apia
for six months, left there on the Alameda and
stopped at Honolulu. The Admiral was given
an ovation at Honolulu. The British man-of-war
Caroline and the Japanese man-of-war
stationed there fired a salute upon his arrival.
He will remain at Honolulu a short time and
then continue the journey to-San Francisco on
the United States steamer Nipsic, repairs on
that boat having been almost completed. She
is expected to sail about October L

A New Protectant EpLcopnl Church at
Greensburs Stnrtrd by Bishop Whitehead.
Bight Bev. Cortlandt Whitehead, Bishop
of the Pittsburg Diocese oi the Protestant
Episcopal Church, laid the corner-stene of
a new churcbat Greensburg, Pa., last
Friday, in the presence ol a large audience.
The church will cost $7,000, and will be in
the Gothic style of architecture. The cere
mony commenced at 3 P. M. by the pro
cession of the Bishop and clergy from the
Second Be'orm Church to the new site. The
clergy were as follows: Rector G. Van
Walters, Bev. Charles Bragdon, Bev. Dr.
Irvin, Bev. Tavlor, of New Haven, and
Bev. P. S. Mesny, of Trinity Hall, Wash
ington, Pa. The congregation numbers 500,
and the church will be hastened to com
pletion. Addresses were made by the
Bishop and Dr. Irvin, and a history of the
parish was read by the Senior Warden. It
covered a period Irom 1851 to the present
time, Bishop Orlando Potter, ot the New
York diocese, having at one time been
rector of the church.
