LT, ' SEPTEMBER '" 28? 188a? ''sff ""' EPWMralllHB i"':: flOW IT HAPPENED. It Was Not Molten Metal That Burned Captain Jones and His Men, BDT THE BURNING COKE AND GAS. ; .All the Tictims of the Accident Mng Well Except Mike Quinn. MUCH SIJIPATHI FOE THE SUFFEEEES At 11 o'clock last night the condition of Captain Jones was greatly improved. His brother was seen at the Homeopathic Hospital and said that he had graduallygrown better since midnight on Thursday. He will re cover, as the injuries on his legs are merely flesh burns, and his body is not badly hurt The swelling on his face has been creatlv reduced, and it will not be disfig ured much, it at all. His head has been scvcrelv hurt by striking a brick or some thin" probably when he fell into the pit. He suffers most from the burns on his left hand, which are Tery severe, and he is con stantly raising it in the air. The men at the Mercy Hospital are also greatlv improved, with the exception of Mike Quinn, whose recovery is exceedingly doubtful. The accident was not, as was first sup posed, dne to the gushing forth ot the molten metal, but by an avalanche of red hot coke and cinders which were forced out through the face of the furnace by the settling down of the bosh. .Repairs had already been effected, and the brickwork strengthened by means of bands or sheet iron w hich encircled the structure when the visit was made, but it was ascertained that the breach throngh which the coke and ciuders were precipitated was not more than two feet square. The distance from the sand to the aperture is about nine feet. The "notch" or cinder hole at which the difficulty occurred is raised abont 12 inches above the sand, across which a trough is constructed to con duct the cinders into the Modoc trucks in the pit below. The area of room immedu ately in front where the accident happened would not exceed nine square yards, and the ground slopes away rather quickly toward the pit edge, making the lootboldau the more insecure in case of necessity to clear out in a hurry. Captain Jones was crouching down in the sand to get a look into the hole when, without any warning tlie face of the furnace gave out, allowing the hot cinders and burning coke and gas to escape. LOXDOX MUSIC HALLS, and the habitues, are graphically described in to-morrow's Dispatch by Jltchard Harding Davis. MEETING!).
