The Chamber of Commerce directors met
yesterday afternoon. The meeting was im
portant, "as it was to take steps looting to
the entertainment of the ioreign delegates
who are to attend the International Con
gress and who will visit this city on atonr
of inspection.
The following letter was read which had
been sent to 'Mayor McCallin, and for
warded by him to the Chamber of Com

to inform j ou that the excursion tendered by
tlic Government to the Foreign delegates to
the International American Conference, will
reach Pittsburg on the morning of Wednesday,
November 0, at 10 o'clock, and remain there
until 7:30 a. M. Friday, November 8, and It is
dented that the party, which will number 75,
should visit as great a number of manufactur
ing institutions as possible

Mr. John H. Rickctson stated that ho had
been talking with President Schmcrtz on the
subject, and he therefore moved that the Pres
ident, at his discretion, appoint a suitable com
mittee to consist of the .Majors of the two
'cities, the Presidents of Councils tho chair
men of the different Chamber of Commerce
committees, as ell as a number of representa
tive manufacturers, with Mr. Schmertz as
Chairman of the whole, to act as a Reception
Committee.

Jlr. George II. An'derson said that the visit
of tliece delegates was a rare opportunity to let
the people of North and South America know
just what rntsburg can do. He thought tho
International Conference a good thing, and as
this city was directly interested tho visitors
should be well treated and given a grand recep
tion. President IL P. Ford, of Select Council, who
was at the meeting by invitation, stated that
the visit of these delegates was an important
matter. He was sorry to say that the city of
Pittsburg bad made no appropriation for such
a reception, and nothing cuuld be done in that
respect now. He was, however, in hearty sym
pathy with any movement lookingto the enter
tainment of the visitors, and would do all in
his po er to aid in such a reception. Pres
ident George Holliday. of Common Councils,
echoed tlie sentiments of Mr. Ford.
Kev. Dr. Allison made a few remarks shew
ing his interest in the matter. He had read a
great deal lately about North and South Amer
ica, and wondered that the United States was
so slow in taking advantage of the wonderful
markets that w ere open. The trade of those
countries is now mostly done with England
and Germany, and at present the people there
have to pay enormous prices for what they get.
He thought that no other city in the country
should be more interested in this matter than
Pittsburg.
BATSE makes a speech.
Hon. Thomas M. Bajne, who was also pres
ent by Invitation, was invited to make a few re
markson thesubject,andhe stated thathe hadno
suggestions to make in the matter. He thought
there were two great results to be made by the
conference. The first was humane measures
for settlements of disputes by amicable meas
ures instead of war. 'J he other uas the exten
sion of Know ledge of our products. The speaker
thought Pittsburg had a greater iutcrest in the
conference than any other city, because of the
Tanety of Its productions.
President Schmcrtz suggested that on ing to
the limited amount ot time the delegates w ould
be in this city that they could not be shown
everything. He suggested that they be shown
the largest and most important -works, and
then have an exhibit in Mechanical Hall of all
the diflerent articles manufactured in this city.
Colonel Bajne. as well as all present, thought
this was the best scheme that could possibly be
arranged.
Mr. George A. Kelly remarked that the com
mittee could show them all they wanted, but
that it would do no good. He tnought what
as most needed was protection for the ship
ping industries in North and South America.
The reason they got their goods from England
and Germany was because ot the protection
provided for their shipping interests in those
ports. The one important question, he thought"
w.is to let them know that the United States
will no longer suffer the humiliation that the
shipping interests hate been subjected to.
Mr. Ricketson's motion was then adopted.

The National Board of steam Navigation
Will Meet in Pittsburg.
The National Board of Steam Navigation
will hold its annual meeting in this citr
October 1 and 2. This is an organization of
Tery great importance. It consists of the pro
prietors of steamships, steamboats and other
steam vessels through the United States, en
gaged either in ocean or inland navigation.
Delegates will attend from all the port cities of
the country, from Maine to California, and
matters of vital interest to American com
merce will be discussed. It is probable that
the delegates will be entertained at a banquet
at the Monongahela House ana given a com
plimentary excursion up the Monongahela
river.
Captain Addi'on Lysle, of this citv, is the
treasurer of the board, and Mr. W. W. O'Neil,
of Elizabeth, is a member of the National
Hoard of Audit. Tflcywill arrange for the en
tertainment of the guests in this city.

It will probably be a two-story building, and

The work of teaiing down the old buildings has
already commenced, aud everything will be
pushed to a finish.

THE CORONER'S 1NQDEST
Develops the Fnct That Both Italian Wcro
Bad Men The Murdered Brother Started
the Row.
Yesterday morning the Coroner held an
inquest on the body of Michael Francis
chello, who was killed by his brother in the
East End on Saturday night. The leading
parties in the case were examined, and some
interesting facts gained from their testimony.
Dominico De Lalla was in the room where
the murder was committed during the hours of
9 and 10. He said that five people wcro there,
and be denied that the. prisoner bad plajed
cards with the deceased. The prisoner heard
his brother say that he was going to play cards
with another man for Si and forbade him to do
it. The deceased insisted that he would play,
and struck his brother for interfering. The
witness then ran out of the room to avoid being
implicated In the row.
Domenae Staluto corroborated the preceding
witness, aud added that the prisoner tried to
avoid a disturbance and kept moving awa v.
The deceased man was held for a time, while
ho was putting his hand in his pocket, presum
ably to get a weapon. He broke away, how.
ever, went after the brother and shortly after
ward was heard to exclaim. "I am wounded.
Guiseppi Chippola testified that he heard the
prisoner say: "Well, we will play for J2." Tho
deceased said: "No, you must not play.
Thereupon the prisoner was slapped in the
face and kicked twice, and witness ran to his
room. When he ran away the deceased was
trying to get something out of his insido
pocket, and he heard the prisoner exclaim,
"Oh, my poor brother."
Guitano Martenello also testified thatthe de
ceased had struck his brother and had forced
the quarrel, and that he even held a closed
knife in his hand. He saw the prisoner have a
large knife, and got at a safe distance. Peter
Posalla, the head of the house, said he attempt
ed to stop the prisoner. Drs. McCandlcss and
Hugh testified to the character or the wounds
infflicted, any one of them, they said, would
have been fatal.
AH the brothers testified that tho deceased
and his brother were very bad men, and had
that reputation in Italy. There had been no
card playing previous to the trouble, and it was
the desire to play which led to the murder. The
five persons present all contributed something
toward buying a keg of beer, and the men wero
slightly under its effects when the trouble
occurred.
The jury rendered a verdict to the effect that
the deceased came to his death through vio
lence done him by his brother, the orisoner.
RIVER ENCROACHMENTS.
Captain Ilrnvo Stirs Up tho Chamber of
Commerce on tbo Subject He is Afraid

Hon. John F. Dravo, who has just re
turned from a convention of rivermen at
Cincinnati, made a verbal report, and
stated that among many other subjects dis
cussed which were important to this city was
one about the encroachment on the river chan
nels by manufacturers. This matter, the
speaker said, was an important one. and if not
stopped will, in time, cause a repetition of the
Johnstown flood. He '-characterized the filling
in as an unmitigated outrage, that should re
ceive immediate attention.
Hon. Morrison Foster stated that in 1S5S the
State established high and low water lines for
Pittsburg and Allegheny, and a map was made
by surveyors. This map w as filed in the Court
of Common Pleas, and will show who are
encroaching on the water lines. He suggested
that the Committee on Rivers and Harbors be
instructed to look the matter up.
Captain Batchclor called attention to the fill
ing in at the B. & O. depot. which he said would
some day sadly injure the Monongahela wharf.
Encroachments havu aleo been made at the
Point to the extent of 259 feet beyond the line,
and the result of this contraction must eventu
ally cause a flood in Pittsburg and Allegheny.
Colonel Bayne asked permission to make a
few remarks on the subject,wbich was granted.
Mr. Baynehen stated that the work of estab
lisninc water lines was supererogation on the
part of the State of Pennsylvania, and she had
no legal richt to do it. The work ot establish
ing such lines belongs distinctly to the Na
tional Government, which has supreme juris
diction in such matters. He advise'd the Cham
ber of Commerce not to commit itself on the
question.
Morrison Foster stated that the establishment
of such lines by the State had never been ques
tioned, and the matter would therefore be one
for tho courts. Mr. Dravo suggested that the
matter nas one which needed immediate atten
tion, and that Colonel Merrill should be com
municated with on tho subject, which was
agreed to. Anderson & Co., of the Mononga
hela House, were admitted as members, and
the meeting adjourned.

Attracts Attention.
The crowds at the Exposition continue to
grow larger as the days spin by. The music
last night was of Merrle England, and more
than one native born far away from home had
his mind carried back to the land of the' Roses.
Despite the rainy weather the crowd was good.
The management has a number of schemes
in incubation to amuse and instruct the public
It has been decided to devote one day to labor,
when mechanics and craftsmen will be given a
perfect opportunity to study and examine the
machinery in motion and at rest. Days will
also be set apart for the various orMian asy
lums, when the inmates will be admitted free.
Manager Johnston complains that somo ex
hibitors are too slow about cleaning up their
stands In tbo morning. , ,,,
Tho General Manager finds that people like
to look at anything in motion. For this reason
Machinery Hall is one ot the principal attrac
tions. He calls attention to the big belt made
out of wire. The only one like it is in Paris.
An electric lamp will be so placed that the
light will shine through tho meshes, revealing
the wire and the bne workmanship.
In spite of rain and weather, the total attend
ance yesterday ran up to the very pleasing
number of 8,000. The attendance to-day will
probably be much greater, and a musical pro
gramme has been prepared that will be
especially pleasing to all. The afternoon pro

labbs' creation are as much a feature as any
thing exhibited. Whatwould an Exposition be

even when competitors from abroad, came
to the old building on Smoky Island and tried
to shake the strong hold he has alwas main
tained among his Pittsburg friends, and failed
in their designs. Yes, Mr. Dabbs is in the ad
vance. None can doubt this when the portraits
of our most notable citizens look them in the
face from their position on the walls and nobly
indorse Ins work. Pittsburg is proud to own
Mr. Dabbs, and among his patrons are noted
the best raembers.of society. It is not a fad
which rives him pre-eminence, but the solid
fact that he is an artist, and can give satisfac
