THE PITTSBUIIQ- DISPATCH, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 16,- 1889'
JAMES REES BURIED.
Another Man Who Helped to Build
Pittsburg Laid Away to Eest.
THE OLD CITIZENS DYING RAPIDLY.
Dr. Holland's Eloquent Eulogy of His Worth
and Life's Work.
A BIG CEOWD OP FRIENDS ATTENDED
The funeral scrjice over the remains of
the late James Kees took place yesterday
afternoon at his residence, fifth avenue,
near Amberson avenue. By 230 r. M. the
beautiful rooms, the hall and the stairs were
thronged with sympathizing friends who
were there to pay a last tribute to their dead
friend. Ko better testimony ot his worth
was needed than to witness tbe vast con
course of people whose countenances evinced
a deep expression of sorrow. At such gath
erings tbe forcible epigram oi Kenan is felt
"Death adds perfection to the most perfect
man."
The coffin of black ebony with massive
silver trappings was elevated upon a cata
falque in the Iront parlor, overlooking a
lovely lawn, shaded by tall overhanging
trees. Above the casket a model of a river
steamer made of white and blush roses,
with the name of the dead man worked in
blue violets, was placed. At his head a
broken pillow of white immortelles stood.
A wreath of pink roses was laid on the lid.
Every portion of the apartment contained a
floral memento from some one who knew
him, while he moved in the great vortex of
human life.
SB. Holland's eulogy.
Promrjtlv at the appointed time the Ecr.
AY. J. Holland, pastor of the Bellfield
Presbyterian church, began the exercises
by reading the burial service. Alter the
ritual had been read, a quartet sang "Be
yond the Starlit Night." The choir after
ward sang a favorite hymn, "Asleep in
Jesus, Blessed Sleep." After it was con
cluded the Rev. Holland delivered an
eloquent panegyric on the virtues of the de
ceased. He said:
"One after another the links that bind
Pittburg of the past with the Pittsburg of
the present are being broken. Less and less
the ranks of men who have laid the founda
tions of this city's commercial and intel
lectual greatness are becoming thinned. "We
scan this vast audience; we can see but few
who have raised our town into a foremost
position upon these munaane shores. Few
or us know that the quiet man who will
shortly slumber beneath the green sward
played one of the most conspicuous roles in
this city's life; yet it is a fact He was, in
social as well as in business lite, unostenta
tious; hut beneath this apparent reserve
there welled up an ocean of sympathy for
those that fortune's ill-favored fingers
touched.
"His life is a conspicuous demonstration
of the divine apothegm 'Whatever thy hand
findeth to do, lo it with thy might' He was
a tnao. of strong convictions. He grasped a
problem, and then with iron tenacity worked
it out. His judgment, not always unerring,
was based upon what in his conception was
right. It is evident the divine favor rested
upon him in all his undertakings, because
the unfolding days were but a revealment of
new successes.
A LOOK AT THE BRIGHT SIDE.
"But let uslookat another side of his life.
The past is irrevocable. The ledger is closed.
From the other side, the spiritual side, we
can cull something that will wonderlully
help us. Since he was a small child he
deeply felt the power of religion. He man
ilested in his daily actions those principles
which are the life and energy of the church.
One instance in his life I will quote but
which I cannot indorse will go to show
his character. When a small child he
sought admittance into the church, so that
he could partake of the holy mysteries; but
the church refused to accept him on account
of his youth. He felt this keenly.
"This action was never forgotten by him.
He never again applied to be admitted.
Nevertheless he lived a life conformable to
his early desires, and the climax of that life
was a triumphant entry into that celestial
domain beyond the shimmering skies. To
those who mourn hi death let me say, the
ministry of the most adorable third person
of the divine trinity will console you more
than the power of human speech can tell."
The pallbearers were W. B. Negley,
Henry Hays, George A. Berry, Colonel
"William H. Herron, C. Loomis, B. S.
Smith, B. F. Wilson, Colonel James Col
lard, James McBride, Daniel Bangby,
Samuel Lewis and George McBrisbin.

DIED IN JAIL.
The Attenuated Form of a Stranger Now
Lies in the Morgue He Was Taken
From the Hospital.
One of the most attenuated specimens of
humanity ever seen out of a dime museum
now lies on the mortuary bench in the
morgue. Not alone can his ribs be counted,
but every articulation in his bones is plainly
discernable through the skin, for no flesh
remains. His name was Robert Reef, or
Reese, who died at the county jail early
yesterday morning of heart disease and a
complication of other disorders.
Reet was found on Second avenue by the
police on August 20. He was sick and de
lirious and appeared to have been drinking,
and the police sent him to the Homeopathic
Hospital. Last Saturday the hospital au
thorities decided that as the man was grow
ing worse each day he should be transferred
to an insane asylum, and to that end he was
committed to jail for examination, prepara
tory to sending him to Dixmont He was
so weak and ill that he had to be carried
into the jail, where he was placed in the
hospital department.
He told the police his name was Reese,
but at the hospital cave the name of Reef,
and said he had lived eight years at Cleve
land, where he was employed in Houck's
clothing house, and at Braddock he worked
in a tailor shop. Inquiry by the hospital
people at both these places failed to bring
responses. The deceased was apparently
about 35 years of age. tall, dark complexion,
black beard and hair.
The body was taken to the morgue audthe
Coroner will hold an inquest this morning.
CEXTKAL'S GUIS?.
A Bit Batch of Prisoners Turned Over to the
Care of the Workhouse.
There were 55 persons at the Central sta
tion yesterday morning, five of whom were
taken to the Twelfth ward for a hearing,
and tbe balance were heard before Magis
trate Hyndman, who officiated in the ab
sence of Mr. Gripp. Of the total number
heard at the Central station 25 were given
workhouse sentences, one was sent to Mor
ganza, and the balance were either given
light jail sentences, lined or discharged.
Kate McCally, an old-timer, was the first
to receive sentence. She had 'assaulted a
man on Wood street by striking him in the
face with her umbrella, and received a 90
days' sentence. George Stuckrath had been
engaged in a fight with Maggie Martin at
199 First avenue. He got a 30 days' sen
tence and she forfeited 530 by not appearing.
William Kilmer and Fritz Dexter had been
fighting on Wood street, but Dexter proved
that he had been on tbe defensive, and was
let off with a 53 fine, while Kilmer got 30
days.
Samuel Johnston, Charles Carter, P. W.
Brooks, John Robinson, Sherman Woodson,
Mose Genlery, John Beachen, William
Adams, Eliza Worth, Myrtle Rossin,Enima
Wolson and Annie Lewis, all captnred in
the raid on Woodruff's disorderly house at
the Yellow Row Saturday night, were given
30-day sentences, while Woodruff and his
wife were held, and an information will be
entered against them for maintaining a dis
orderly house.
John O'Brien, Con Folev and James
Mehaffey each got 30 days for assaulting
Peter Holohan, who accused them of beat
ing him up and robbing him ot a small
sum of money. Holohan had a badly dam
aged countenance and a couple of witnesses
to prove his statements.
John Wood and Alex. Carter got into a
fight in a Second avenue barber shop Satur
day and turned the shop inside out. break
ing things up generally, for which they got
30 days. Charles Mclnary, a small boy
who was recently released from Morganza,
was acting suspiciously on Ninth street and
arrested. He will be returned to Mor
ganza to-day.

What the Davis Inland Dnm Does for
Lovers of Boating-.
The completion of the Davis Island dam
is a boon to the lovers of boating. It has
slack-watered the Allegheny river, making
a very slow current, so that it is suitable
for rowing during the entire open water
season.
Because of its freedom from steamboats
and coal barges, the Allegheny has been the
favorite rowing water. The boat houses are
located on its banks, and they do a large
business in renting boats when the current
is favorable. During a great part of the
season just past, as in preceding seasons, the
current ot the Allegheny has been so rapid
that it was difficult to row up stream. Not
infrequently, when the water went down
verv swiftly, the keepers of boats declined
to let them out. Many a couple went down
to the river in the evening, intent on a quiet
row on the moonlight water, to be refused a
boat by the man who owned them, while he
pointed, for his reason, to the swilt current.
The dam has changed this condition of
things, creating a pool in the lower Alle
gheny. Aquatically disposed lovers can
now be sure of a row on almost any fine
evening.
A FAMILY ROW
In Which Tonne WcGlnnls Wns Hit Over
the Eye With a Table Lejf.
Frank McGinnis was arrested by Officer
Bennett at his home on Preble avenue
Allegheny, yesterday afternoon, and lodged
in the lockup, charged with disorderly con
duct. It is alleged by the officer that McGinnis
got into a dispute with his mother about
spending his money for drink, and a gen
eral row ensued, in which his lather also
took part After smashing up the dishes
and furniture, young McGinnis was struck
on theside of the face with the lego't a table,
inflicting an ugly gash over his right eye!
He will be given a hearing this morning. '

The Single Tax Association Declares In
Favor of the Democracy Democratic
Principles Indorsed.
Yesterday afternoon the Single Tax As
sociation decided to throw the strength of
the organization during the campaign this
fall to the Democratic candidates and plat
form. The meeting was held in Veteran
Legion Hall, Sixth avenue. The platform
adopted by the Democratic Convention on
September 4 was up for discussion, and this
ended in an unqualified indorsement.
The features of the platform that met with
approval were the declarations in favor of
"pure, honest and economical government,
to the end that labor may not be robbed of
the bread it has earned;" tariff tax reform;
opposition to trusts, and the indorsement
oi the Australian ballot system.
The paragraphs in the platform embody
ing these ideas were made a preamble, and
then the following resolutions were adopted:
Resolved, That the sinele tax men. Irrespec
tive of party affiliations, look upon these decla
rations as a step forward in tbe emancipation
of labor, and in securing to the working classes
the freedom of the ballot independent of the
assaults of intimidation and corruption.
Resolved, That as It appears at tbe present
time that tbe Democratic party is moving more
closely to tbe line of individual freedom and
emancipation of labor than any other, we will
in the coming election support tbe State can
didates of tnis party, as embodying the princi
ples set forth In their platform, and will nse
our best efforts to secure their election.
Resolved, That we will cordially co-operato
with the Democratic societies of tbe State and
our city toward the attainment of this end. and
for tbat purpose we ask them to put them
selves in communication with us.
The Single Tax Association has 100 ac
tive membeis, the majority of whom are
men who have taken an active part in poli
tics and ior many of whom it is claimed they
can carry their districts. They intend
taking a lively part in the coming cam
