mmmmmmim sip, & THE PITTSBURG-' 'DISPATCH, MONDAY,- SEPTEMBERSf 1886-- - --?- y ii.1itffi'fo.ttii , V4f- i THE YICTIMS BUEIED. - Steelworkers at Homestead Do Honor to Their Dead Brethren BP-TURX1KG 0 DT AT THE FDS EEALS TYith Saddened Hearts Thej Laid the -- Pour Workmen to Best SOME ELOQUENT SERMONS PREACHED The four employes of Carnegie, rhipps & Co. who were killed by the explosion of molten steel in the Homestead mill Friday afternoon were buried yesterday with honors of the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel "Workers. The day was a very hot one, and in the streets ot Homestead the dust was deep. Several hundred people attended each of the funerals. Andrew Kebler's home was on Heisel street, where he was the owner of three houses. He left a wife and one child, which is sick with the measles. He was so terri bly disfigured that his face was not exposed to the view of friends at the house. His face was not only blistered all over, but the nose had been burned off His right arm was a black stump and below the chest his body was an almost formless cinder. Hot far away, on Eighth avenue, was the home of William Pagan, where his mother and wife mourned his death. He left two little children, one only a week old. He was not disfigured, and during the morning hours many friends visited the house and looked at the face. His widow was too ill to leave the house, and was delirious during the day. The fnneral was attended by eight or ganizations, Acme, Munhall, Washington, John Kane, Thomas Marlowe and Armour lodges of the Amalgamated Association; St. Michael's Polish Society and a temperance society of the Catholic Church of St Mary Magdalen. Kebler. Fagan and Bauer were members of Acme Lodge. The lodges met in their halls at 8 o'clock, and shortly after 9 formed on Ann street. The procession was headed by the Excelsior and Steel "Works Bands. It moved to the house of Andrew Kebler, where his cofiin was taken up by 12 pallbearers, who relieved one another by sixes. The cofiin of William Fagas was then received into the line, and the solemn procession moved along Eighth avenue to Ann and on Ann to Tenth ave nue, where St. Mary Magdalen Church stands. HOW THET MARCHED. Daniel "W. Cus'n acted as chief marshal and Thomas Chfibrd as chief of staff Im mediately behind the Excelsior Band IT. H. O'Donnell, President of Acme Lodge, and Charles M. Schwab, Superintendent of the steel works, walked side by side. Acme Lodge, which appeared in full force, acted as the escort of honor, preced ing the coffius. Behind the coffins the mourners walked in the thick dust, fol lowed by the other organizations. The bodies, at 9.30, were carried into the church and placed in front of the altar. The building was crowded by workingmen and their families. Rev. Father Bullion read the funeral service, with responses by the choir. He .hen delivered a brief discourse. He dwelt upon the uncertainty of human life and the duty of man to be ready at all times. He expressed his sorrow for the relatives and friends of the dead, and urged all who were theirfriends to pray lor the re- poseof their souls. The service did not in all occupy more than half an honr. During f the prayers one man was overcome by the I heai and was earned out by two .comrades. He soon recovered. The bodies were then carried to the Pitts '"burg, McKeesport and Youghiogheny de pot. The Steel Works Band led the pro cession to the depot. A special train of , nine coaches conveyed the remains and about 500 persons to Braddock, where the interment was made in the Catholic Cenie--iery. The new Catholic cemetery at Home stead is not yet ready for burials. The Excelsior Band and the Cadet Drum Corps accompanied the party to Braddock. There were no services there. At 10 o'clock the funeral service was begun over the body of John Lewis. He was a married man, but his wife and three children are in Wales. He had been only 2i months in Homestead, and boarded with Mrs. Ann Davies, on Fourteenth ave nue. Mr. Lewis was the only one of the four dead men who was a Protestant. The services were conducted by Rev. Benjamin Bogers, of the Baptist Church. HE WAS OIA TTUIOIT MAN. Lewis' face was severely blistered. His body was viewed by numerous friends be fore the cofiin was closed. The Steel "Works Band and about 100 members of the various lodges of the Amalgamated Asso ciation escorted the body to the Franklin Cemetery, a mile southeast of the town. The steel workers displayed the same re Epect for John Lewis as for the three other dead men, although he did not belong to the association. He had not been in Amer ica long enough to become a member. At 1:40 o clock the train returned from Braddock. Shortly thereafter the body of Nicholas Bauer was removed from his home and conveyed to the Laferty Hill Cemetery, about six miles southwest ot the town, on the Brownsville turnpike. Bauer was a man of 23 years, the son ot Stephen Bauer, who keeps a saloon on the borough line, at the east end. His father, mother, three sis ters and a brother mourned his death. His mother and his youngest sister were se verely prostrated by their affliction, and their sobs were pitiful as the casket was borne out of the house and placed in the hearse. A long line of carriages and bug gies followed the remains to the cemetery. The procession was escorted to the borough limits by the Steel Works Band and about 100 members of the Amalgamated Associa tion. In the chapel at the cemetery the Catholic funeral service was performed. The proceedings of the day were through out conducted nromptly and with much decorum. A spirit of genuine respect and sympathy was manifested. The exceeding heat made it a trving ordeal for the mem bers of the bands and lodges. It was reported last evening that 8. H. Shnltz, the railroad weighmaster at the steel mill, wno had his arm crushed bv the cars xt few minutes after the explosionj was at the point of death. His shoulder was badly lacerated and his chest was crushed, He has a wife and five children. HORSFORD'S ACID PUOSPHATE For llie Tired Brain From over-exertion. Try it. Gallery Open Monday. When a representative of this paper walked into the studio of a well-known local artist yesterday, he found that gentleman deeply engrossed in a magazine-shaped book, with a brown-colored cover. "What work is it you have there?" the artist was asked. "A new one, that fills a long-felt want," replied the genius of brush and palette. "Our American literature is wofully deficient in works on the fine arts. Mv experience has taught me that for any subject relating to art; especially to painting, I am compelled to write to England or, better still, appljr to the French or Germans. It is humiliating for a patriotic, loyal and proud son or our great Bcpublic to have to make such a con fession, but it has hitherto been the truth nevertheless. However, this work proves that we are making rapid strides of advance even in that direction. It may seem odd that'in a country like ours, where political institutions, general education, mechanical appliances, agriculture, etc, are so far ahead of other nations that the fine arts have been so much neglected. But the appearance of books like this fills me with hope, especially because it has been gotten up so as to be within the reach of everybody. Just look at it. There are 66 parts, and here are the first few numbers' only 25 cents apiece. "Here you see a fine typogravure by Benouf, entitled 'Lending a Hand.' An old man is rowing a boat and bis little grandchild has hold of the grandfather's oar, because she wants to help him, to lend him a hand. What a beautiful picture, and what an ornament it wonld make for any drawing room or parlor. But let us look further. Here you have a picture from the hand of Lobrichen, who has become famous as a great painter of children. He always puts such naturalness and playful childishness into his pictures that they at once appeal to everybody chancing to look at the amusing little mites. This steel plate, 'A Tempest in a Teapot, is one of Lobncheu's finest works. "Thus you can go along from one part of this book to the last, in each you find new treasures, SDecimens from the brushes of onr best masters of the day. By simply scan ning the book you get an idea, and by care ful perusal yon have acquired a knowledge of art and art workers, which is worth many times the value of the work. The biograph ical sketches are all well written in the most concise and entertaining manner." "But you have not told me the name of the book yet." "Oh, excuse me; it is 'Art and Artists of Our Time.'
