fltH m w :t t - SMUGGLING DANGERS. JYhisky Surreptitiously Taken in to W, Hospital Patients. TOE STARTLING CASE IN POINT. Superintendent Cowan, ofthoWest Penn, Tells About It. GIN AKD OTHER DELICACIES DITTO t A reporter for this paper yesterday wit nessed a very serious and dangerous smug gling case which might have resulted in death. "While in conversation with Super intendent Cowan, of the "West Penn Hospi tal, a woman approached that institution carrying a bundle. The Superintendent called the reporter's attention to her. He said: "That woman has in her possession a bot tle of whisky which she will try and smug gle into the hospital to her brother." When she reached the front steps of the hospital the doorkeeper asked her whom she wanted. She desired to see her brother, and he bade her pass in. She was going up the stairs to the ward when the Superintendent called to her, asking what was in the bun dle. She replied: "Some clean underclothing." "Anything else?" queried the Superin tendent. She hesitated and then replied: "Why, yes; a bottle of wine;" which turned out to be hard wine. The Superintendent very quietly reproved her for her misplaced sympathy, but assured her if she repeated that action, the authorities would be obliged to refuse her admittance. The Superintendent afterward remarked that the systematic smuggling of delicacies into the hospital was aery serious evil, and many deaths had resulted therefrom. Friends olten came to see patients suffering from fevers, and, if the patient craved for any special article of food, the friends al ways attempted to get it for them, though they know THE HOSMTAL MOTTO is, "Don't bring anything." Said the Su perintendent: "Whatever the doctor orders for the patient, no matter what the cost may be, it is always got." He gave an instance of this craving by the fever patients: "A negro was brought to the hospital with ty phoid fever several weeks ago. He had -S15 in the bank, which I got for him at his re quest. With this 15 he constantly begged the officials to get him something that he had a special liking for. At last said he to the nurse: 'Get me some pickled pig's feet, cabbage and potatoes.' The nurse replied: Why, man, that will kill you!' 'Well,' said the negro, 'I know that, but I want to have a good time anvhow, while I live.' " The Supintendent said also that in the past it was a common practice to smuggle drink to male patients; but a few weeks ago two men came up to the hospital after visiting hours, and importuned him to be allowed to go up to one of the wards TO SEE A FRIEND. Said they: "We have come a considera blejdistance to see onr friend, and we do not want to go away without seeing him." The Superintendent told them it was the policy to be as liberal as possible, and conducted the men to the ward nnd left them there. "I had occa sion later on to repass through the ward." said the Superintendent, "and saw ithe men push something under the bed spread, which turned out to have been a bot tle of the vilest of gin. We are, by careful watching, eliminating the practice, but you observe by this woman's action this alter noon how difficult it is to suppress it. Women conceal it in their garments, and men have special pockets made to carry it in. "We shall be forced to make an iron-clad rale forbidding any person who is found in fringing the hospital rule from admittance to the hospital." GOOD FEEIGHT BUSINESS. Iron Kate Will be Restored to the Old BuaU September 1. Freight agents report that the business of tbe roads has been excellent for the past few months. It has been decided to advance the rates on iron September 1 to the old basis of 25 and 30 cents between New York and Chicago. It is just possible that the rates will be made higher, but it depends on the condition of business at the time. The rates from Pittsburg to Chicago will be 15 and 17! cents, and 15 and 18 cents to Uew York. Tbe new official classification No. 6 has been issued. The snly changes touching Pittsburg are made on glassware. The rates on bottles were reduced some time ago to third and fifth class. Last month the rate on cotton ties from Pittsburg to Texas common points were re duced from 80 cents to G7 cents. George McCague, of the Lake Shore road, is working on a new coke classification. A cumber of changes have been made in the last year. A GEEAT EXCURSION CITI. Railroad Reap Harvests Carrying Pitts bore Tourists. General Passenger Agent A. E. Clark, of the Pittsburg and Lake Erie Railroad, said yesterday that Pittsburg was the best excur sion town in the country. It has become a habit among the people to go somewhere every summer, and this year the lanes have been popular. Some railroad men imagine that the water scared many away from the city this summer, but Mr. Clark doesn't take much stock in the theory. He says the people prefer to go in small parties than on large excursions, and every day the crowds are growing larger. Yesterday morning General Passenger Agent Anderson, of tbe Allegheny Valley, lert with over 400 people for Lake Chautau qua and Niagara Falls. The Lake Erie will run another excursion to Niagara Falls next Tuesday. Fine Whiskies. XXX, 1855, Pure Eye Whisky, full quarts $2 00 I860. Good Building- Stone Within Stent of tbe City Neglected. There are high-nosed people who cannot see wealth beneath their feet, and among those are people living along the line of the Imperial Coal Eailway Gempany. A year or two ago N. W. Sharer, Esq., called atten tion through the press to the fact that on Montour run, within less than 300 yards of the Imperial Eailway Company's road, there was a sandstone deposit equal for building purposes to that at Massillon, O., and with in 12 miles of this city. The atone is soft and easily quarried, but when exposed to the atmosphere hardens to such an extent that it resists pressure almost equal to granite. A few thousand dollars would be suffi cient to open the quarry and build a tram way that would deliver the stone to the cars and make the quarry a veritable gold mine, not only to the owners of the ground, but also to the railway company. As Mr. Shafer says, the country up Mon tour run, although within sight of the Court House tower, has never been developed, and the section as well as this city has suffered in consequence. It seems strange that we should haul building material 100 miles when it is lying at our door. TERT WATER! CEMETERY BONDS Figure In n Bill In Equity Involving nn Issne of SSO.OOO. Eobert G. West yesterday filed a bill in equity against the Homestead Cemetery Company, and Samuel G., L. H. and North West, C. P. Seip and John F. Cox, of tbe company. The plaintiff claims the defend ants purchased from him four acres, 129 perches of land, in addition to over 32 acres they had otherwise obtained, for the ceme tery. No stock was issued, but bonds were given to the extent of 580,000. Of this, West states, $4,200 worth were given to him in payment for his land. Over $60,000 worth were issued for the other 32 acres ob tained from Samuel 6., L. H. and North West, and $15,455 worth of the bonds, it is alleged, were fictitious. What West received for his four acres, 129 perches, he alleges was a fair value; bnt the other land was not worth over $20,000. As a result he holds-that all the bonds issued in excess of $24,200 are ficti tious and fraudulent and were issued for the purpose of allowing large profits to the holders. He asks that the bonds in excess of that amount be decreed null and void. ONLY 14 OCT OP 103 Were the Typhoid Fever Deaths In This City Last Week. CHARACTER READING THE IDEA "Worked Oat by a Man Who Studies Both Bumps and Bodies. LARGE POSSIBILITIES OF TflE SCHEME Prof. P. S. Herman, of a local mathemat ical and classical college, was interviewed in his Allegheny residence a day or two since, with regard to the new science of phreno-physiology, of which he claims to be the pioneer. The Professor obligingly sup plied all particulars required, permitting the reporter to glance over tbe series of lec tures on the new science, which he has now thoroughly finished. These lectures are addressed to profession al and business men, and to all others into whose province the reading of character ei ters. Thev are centrifugal, and support pe voluntary laws, contradicting in theiren' tirety tbe doctrines of tbe fatalist. Thev contain matter in reference t the character reading, applicable to business, society, science and administration of justice. Their aim appears to be to know man as he is, through the thousand clews which his bearing, conversation, fora, face, etc., afford the investigators. In act tbey seek to make character reading a great factor in society. The Professor swtes that, knowing a man ordinarily and fudging by his individual physical laws. means of the science read hfi almost as a book. Thus phrenVphysiology is to the human construction yhat geology is to the surface of the earth, i NOT MERE PHRENOLOGY. "Mind you," said the Prtfessor," this science is not mere phrenology, because phrenology is as yet in an imperfect state of development. Moreover, phrenology con fines itself to the nervous System of the head, and disregards that M the trunk. Phreno-physiology suppose the nervous system and the brain to farm one unit. Hence, what phrenology wtnld blame in man for defective organs, his science, by examining the whole systent, may prove to be unworthy of blame." ' The Professor fiercely denied a timorous suggestion that his science lid not admit of free agency in man. "It admits or free agency,'.' he said, "and it tlso supports the immortality of tbe soul. It proves man to have almost infinite capabilities for im provement, socially, intelligently, finan cially, morally and religiously. A man well versed in this science can always repel the insidious promptings to self-destruction. It is the science of nature the revelation of God's great work. It is what Francis Bacon called 'verbum dei in rebus creatis manitestum.' " Another gentleman, quite conversant with this subject, made it clearer by saying: "With a proper allowance for the Professor's natural exultation over his now complete labors he has been toiling at the science for eight years it must be admitted that phreno-physiology appears to be endowed with a PROGRESSIVE AD PURELY AMERICAN spirit. It is one of those discoveries which many people have passed heedlessly by; and no doubt there are thousands who have thonght out tbe principles of phreno-physi ology without dreaming of reducing them to a science. There is no doubt that phreno-' physiology is a science, as no element ot me science is to be found wanting in its com position. It is as yet in its infancy, ot course, but every science has known an in fancy. '.Thousands, cf years ago geography was born. Before itsdiseawry many- had known that there were islands and rivers and seas, but none bad thought of building a science on them. It required a Pliny to make geography out of these crude ele ments, just as Prof. Herman claims to have made phreno-physiology from the shreds and patches of character-reading which he found in the sages and among the shrewd men of our own times. It is only fair that Americans should hear the professor before any judgment is pronounced on the valne of this new departure." Several examinations bymeans of phreno physiology of individuals previously un known to the Professor have taken place, and ail resulted successfully. His full name is Poncianus Sismondi Herman. Simply n Case of Sympathy. Officer Henry Herman, of the Allegheny police, who went bail for Mrs. D. M. Kaercher, the Allegheny druggist, who is fighting the Law and Order League, was on Monday morning served with a no tice (not from that society, however) to ap pear before Alderman Tatum. In the after noon he received another notice from the Law and Order people. He appeared be fore Alderman Tatum, admitted selling on Sunday, and paid his fine. Alderman Brinker, before whom Mr. Kaercher was summoned by the L. & O., decided against him also; but Mr. Kaercher has appealed. In conversation with Mr. Kaercher yes terday, it was gleaned that there is to be no diminution of energy in the Sunday selling struggle. Last Sunday's visitors to the drugstore were quite as respectable and just as numerous as those of any preceding week. Mr. Kaercher says that a somewhat wrong impression was conveyed in a recent inter view with him. He did not mean to ascribe miserliness or cowardice to his fellow drug gists, but merely expressed a wish that they would also enter into the Sunday selling. GRASS, MOSS AND LACE.j A Combination by the Aid ot Which a Hired Girl Raised Cain. At an early hour yesterday morning the home of Charles Carrier, on Willow street, was almost destroyed by fire. The servant girl, who had been away to the country, brought home a bundle oi long dry grass, placed it in a vase beneath an anchor of dry moss. The girl "arose about 4 o'clock and lit the lamp, carelessly throwing away the match. Alter she had gone downstairs the grass became ignited and it set the anchor on fire. The lace curtains next caught the flames, then the bedclothes, and so on. Mr. Carrier being aroused, rushed up stairs. The family all came to his assist ance, and, by their united effort, subdued the flames without further damage than the loss ot the upper chamber. Johnstown Given Another 1.1ft.
