rTHE GIGANTIC WORK Of Making the Bomantic Haights Bun a Causeway for Sewage. 'ELECTRICITY AIDS SEWER DIGGERS The Big Charges of Dynamite Used on a Terr Deep Tunnel. SOME FACTS ABOUT IMPBOYEMEKTS The magnitude of the work of construct , ins tb-e Haight's run sewer is not generally known. It is to be one of the system of sewers that wtll drain the East End. The Negley avenue line is intended to bring this drainage to Haight's run, and there the great sewer will take it on to the river. This Talley is one of the prettiest in East Liberty. It is sometimes called Fix's Hol low, and its romantic dells long since made it popular for picnics. Over 100 laborers it ere at work yesterday transforming the pretty ravine into a causeway for filth. The sewer will be 8,000 feet long. From the river up the ravine for about 700 feet is the most difficult portion of the work. Im mense rocks tmre to be blasted with dyna mite to secure a channel, which must be sunk 18 feet. The method used in blast ing the rock is to drill small holes and in sert a dynamite cap. These caps have at tached electric wires, which are connected with a dvnamo. When everything is in readiness a lever is drawn, which sends out the current, and the cap explodes, tearing the rock asunder. Twenty-four caps can be shot at once. The ipnitine dynamo is a cu rious machine. The sewer's bottom is being laid with Iiigomer granite block and lined with Portland cement. It is built over with the red brick. The diameter of the sewer is at the river five feet, and gradually tapers off up to Hiland avenue. The vari ous diameters are 4) feet, 4 feet. 3V feet and 3 feet. The sewer is well braced. W" J. Dunn, the contractor, expects the work to be completed about the 1st ot November. A tunnel ISO long had to be made 32 feet below the Allegheny Valley .Railroad trace Much inconvenience was experienced dur , ing the tunneling, owing to the rise in the river at the time of Johnstown's disaster. The Valley Railroad, to facilitate the work men, have put in a special siding. The sewer, when finished, will cost about $50, 000, or at least this is the nearest to an esti mate that can be arrived at now, the con tract being let by measurement. The work on the big Thirty-third street sewer is equally interesting. It will drain that section of the East End valley, empty in:; into the Allegheny river at the foot of Thirty-third street. Much of this sewer is being made by simply walling up and deep ening the natural water course now existing in this valley. This is the old Two-mile run. It crossed Butler street at the grade once, but when that thoroughfare was filled in and pared a large stone culvert hid the creek from sight The stream has a rock bottom, and at several places immense quan tities of dynamite have been used to deepen or widen the channel. The brick work on the new sewer is very complete. When finished it will be one of the stanchest speci mens of that class ot masonrv in the State. Remember The celebrated pianos and organs that S.
