Special Extra Hall for Tin-Plate,

PEESIDEST MARVIN'S HAPPY FIX
He Tells How Imperatively Spaco is Seeded
for Sev. Interests.
3IUSIC, AET AND THE BOXD SCHEME
The Exposition Society has become ser
iously cramped for zoom. It is apparent
that buildings additional to the Main
Building, Art Gallery and Machinery Hall
are a necessity. President Marvin of the
society said yesterday: "Our space is all
assigned, and still applications are coming
in daily, and we are puzzled as to room.
A'c cannot cancel allotments made, yet the
class of visitors besieging us for room repre
sents desirable articles of exhibit. This
situation is vastly different from the time
not so long since, when we were almost
derisively asked how the vast area could be
filled. There is only one thing to be done,
and that is to provide more room in some
manner.
"We have yielded to pressure in one in
stance. The representatives of the tin
plate industry, headed by the well-known
JIcKcesport company, intend to give an
extensive realistic representation of the
working details of tin-plate manufacture.
Such an offer could hardly be refused, but
the exhibit could not bs admitted to the
Main Hall, as the use of any other motive
or heating power than water or electricity
would vitiate our insurance contract. Ma
chinery Hall will be crowded with other ex
hibits, and we have therefore concluded to
construct a special building at the west
end of the Main Hall for the tin-plate
people.
) A MAMMOTH GLASS SHOW.
i"The glass manufacturers of Pittsburg
and vicinity have applied for space for a
mammoth exhibition of glass and methods
of glass-making, and Mr. D. C. Ripley, of
our Board of Directors, advocates the erec
tion of a supplemental building, to be whol
ly devoted to the glass exnibit, and the
glabs manufacturers give the assurance that
it will be the most remarkable and exten
sive display of glass ever made in this coun
try. Although no official action has as yet
been taken, there is no doubt that a special
building will be erected.
"In a general sense, the qnality of ex
hibits already booked indicates an Exposi
tion of surpassing interest, representing all
portions of Pennsylvania and several ad
jacent States, and a number of exhibitors
are already shipping their display or
especially manufactured articles to the city.
All other preparations are under way, and
every detail is well in hand."
For the regular meeting of the Board of
Directors held yesterday afternoon, a quorum
was drummed up alter considerable vigorous
telephoning. The letter, heretofore pub
lished, to the life members of the Exposition
Society, announcing the $200,006 bond
scheme, was approved and its circulation
ordered.
A LOCAL BAND GETS IT.
After some discussion the report of the
Executive Committee, recommending the
engagement of the Great "Western Band for
the period of the Exposition, was adopted.
The baud, under the leadership of Prof. B.
"Weiss, will play four hours daily in Main
Hall, during the Exposition. Gilniore's
Thirteenth Regiment Baud, of New 5Tork,
was under discussion, but the preference
was given to the local band.
There will be a meeting of the Financ-
and Building Committees upon the grounds
this morning to settle the size of the res-
fc taurant, in conjunction with Architect
Stillbcrg. The same committees met on the
grounds yesterday, and determined that an
iron or any other style of fence aronnd the
buildings would be detrimental to the effect
ot the facades of both Main Hall and Ma
chinery Hall.
The contracts for calcimininz and cleans
ing of the interior ot Maiu Hall are to be
let within a few days, and painting is now
in progress.
Artist Clarence Johns is at work upon
the details of the art exhibit, and states that
at least COO pictures will be on view, a
larger number than ever seen in this city
before. He said also that though several
art enthusiasts are clamoring lor Millet's
"L'Angelus," the chances of securing that
famous masterpiece were slim.
The tickets of admission are now being
prepared. Tliese will be issued as follows:
Two thousand life managers' complimen
tary books, with 40 coupons in each book,
40,000 adult, 20,000 children, 1,000 employe,
and COO exhibitors' tickets.
A GRANDFATHER KE-MAKEIED.
An Old Gemlemnn of 87 Marries a Widow
of 42 Yearn of Ace.
John Young, Sr., a well-to-do farmer of
Indiana township, yesterday morning
enterd the marriage license office. He was
accompanied by Mrs. Elizabeth Kendall, a
a fine-looking widow from Harmersville,
Pa. Their object was to obtain a marriage
license.
Mr. Xoung was born October 30, 1801,
nnd is over 87 years of age. He is a grand
father, but as he was getting old he thought
he needed some one to care for him. His
choice was Mrs. Kendall. The couple re
ceived the license and proceeded to Alder
man McMaster's office, where that genial
Magistrate soon added 42 to 87.

New System of luring Rnlla on the Second
Avenue Line.
The Second Avence Street Ealiway is
being relayed and extended to Glenwood.
The system of laying the track is a new one.
The old manner of spiking the rails to
wooden stringers has been done away
entirely. In the present method the
ties are laid under ground five feet
apart, the entire length of the road. On
each of these are placed two iron chairs, one
at either end and securely bolted to the
timber. The rails are then placed in the
chair, after the ends have been secured by
the regular fish plates, making a road fully
as substantial as a steam railway. It is
proposed to run the cars at the rate of 15
miles an hour. '

THE OLD HOARD RESIGNS.
The Formal Change In management "of the
Blrminchnm Company Ilns Taken rince
History of the Old Company.
The old board of the Birmingham Street
Car line met yesterday afternoon in.con
jnnction with the new organization, in the
office or W. W. Patrick, on Fifth avenue.
Mr. Patrick, as President of the road,
was asked to act as chairman. The meeting
being opened, all the members of the old
board tendered their resignations, one after
another. The gentlemen of the old board
Messrs. Charles H, Clark, B. "Wolf, Jr.,
Alexander Nlmick, "William M. Hirsh and
W. W. Patrick then stepped out and the
new board was organized.
It is composed of Messrs. H. Sellers
McKee, Thomas McKee, D. Brickell, James
A. Chambers and Frank McGowan. Mr.
H. Sellers McKee was elected President,
Mr. Brickell Secretary and Mr. Murray
Verner General Manager.
The Birmingham company is one of the
oldest street car corporations in the two
cities, having been organized in 1859, with
Mr. Beltzhoover as President. For a period
of 20 years the road made but little money;
but from tbe very time that Mr. Patrick was
elected President, in 1879, the property rose
in value, and since then has been consid
ered one of the best lines in the city. About
ten years ago the company purchased the
Birmingham Short Line for 550,000, which
made the company sole owner of all street
car franchises to the Southside. The equip
ment of the road has always been consid
ered one of the best in the United States.
Mr. Patrick, a great lover of horses, took a
special pride in them, and frequently he
was seen on the driver's scat handling the
reins himself.
The capital stock of the old company was
but $200,000. Increasing it to 1,000,000
evidently means business in more ways
than one.
DIAMOND ALLEY CLAIMS.
The Board of Viewers Will Meet August i
to Assess Ihe DnmnBes.
The Board of Viewers will to-day send
ont notices to all parties interested in tbe
widening of Diamond street, that on Thurs
day, August 1, the board will meet on the
ground to receive claims for damages caused
by the improvement The board is ready to
proceed with the matter and will go ahead
with it the same as jn the case of any other
street opening.
Yesterday Chief Bigelow sent a copy of
the following letter to David Gregg, Esq.,
and to Mrs. Eda S. E. McKee, who are
owners of the building in course of erection
at the corner of Diamond and "Wood streets:
Yon are hereby notified that upon yesterday,
the 22d Inst, the ordinance of tbe city of Pitts
burg providing lor and authorizing the opening
of Diamond street became a valid ordinance,
and thereupon the city will proceed In due
time through its proper officers and depart
ment to have the wort therein provided for
performed and executed. You are hereby no
tified that tbe city will not be responsible in
any manner for any damages or claims yon may
present arising from any work, leases or im
provements you may make in tbe future upon
any property of which you may be tbe owner,
fronting or abutting on said Diamond street,
nor will the Board of Viewers allow any such
additional work.
THE FAMOUS K0ADH0DSE.
It Falls to Brine Fall Vnlne at Auction and
Isn't Sold.
Colonel "William A. Herron, administra
tor of the estate of the late Martha Newell,
widow of the noted restauratenr, Tony New
ell, yesterday offered the Newell Boadhouse
and grounds, at the corner of Forbes street
and Shady lane, at Orphans' Court sale.
The sale was postponed, on a bid of $31,500,
until next Monday at 10 o'clock A. M. The
vendor thinks the property worth consider
ably more than offered, and some people say
it would be cheap at $40,000.
The building and surroundings are first
class in every respect for the purpose in
tended, the house and fixtures being of the
most approved modern style. The grounds
extend over more than six acres, and the lo
cation is delightful. The proposed rapid
transit line of cars will run within 200
yards of the property.
The attendance was lane, and Colonel
Herron expects to find increased interest
manifested at the next offering of the prop
erty. EOOM FOE MORE WAIFS.
The Summer Homo for Children at Oak.
tnont Is Enlarging.
.The ladies of the Society fo ther Improve
ment of the Poor are negotiating for the
purchase of another house at Oakmont with
four rooms, and if purchased, more rooms
will be added. Sixty-two children will be
sent to the Summer Home on Friday, for a
two weeks' star, and as many more are
scheduled for August 9. Thus far over 200
persons have been sent to the Home this
summer.
Two Ways of Looking at It.
Patrons of the P. & "W. By. complain
that, since the death of Mr. Callery, the
schedules of the road are arranged almost
entirely in the interest of freight trains,
thereby causing much inconvenience to
people residing on the line of the road.
They seem to forget, however, that the first
requisite to the road's success must be pros
perity, and that, without the present freight
boom, prosperity would be impossible.
Four School Tenchers Dropped.
Considerable excitement has been raised
in the Seventh ward over the dropping of
four teachers in the Franklin school. The
Board of Directors say the action was con
templated a year ago. The teachers
dropped were: Misses S. A. Leech, F. V.
Jeffrey, Mary Miller and Miss Confer.

How 20 Women and 6 Men Keep Busy All
the Time, Chasing Dirt.
CHAT WITH A C0DRT HOUSE JANIT0E
Very vague notions ore entertained re
garding the "cleaning up" of our public
buildings, and the number of hands em
ployed in the service. Yesterday a Dis
patch reporter swooped down on the Court
House buildings, intent upon ascertaining
these points, and clambered up to the sanc
tum,of thegenial janitor.Mr. Mercer. The
room in question is on the second floor, and
has a suspicion of the country lurking about
its vine-clad window and well-kept flowers.
It is a sort of verdant, sweet-scented oasis in
a dreary desert of legal sterility.
Mr. Mercer was at home, and, as usual,
quite willing td give all the information in
his power. The first' question propounded
related to the number of laborers employed.
HE EXPLAINS IT.
"Well," said Mr. fiercer, "we employ
about 6 men and 20 women to do our clean
ing. Three of the men devote tbeir energies
to, the windows and glass, as well as to the
doos, while the remaining 3 are engaged in
carrying ice to the coolers, in sweeping the
rooms and corridors, and in using the hose.
Of the women, 8 are continually scrubbing
the halls; the others get so many rooms
each, to scrub out. We have, as you know,
7 judges' rooms, 11 court rooms and the
attorneys' room,which,with the other offices,
keep the 20 women pretty constantly em
ployed," Asked regarding wages, Mr. Mercer stated
that the men receive $50 and the women $25
a month. The staff of laborers is never re
duced, even when the Judges are not sitting.
Work is never permitted to relax. The
great difficulty in cleaning is found with the
marble floors, which Mr. Mercer thinks a de
cided mistake in a big public building.
The hose is nsed for cleaning the sidewalks.
Water can be had in the lavatories on every
floor, and the scrubbing brush and bucket
take the place of the hose.
KOTHESQ LIKE SOAP.
Mr. Mercer could not even approximate
the amount of soap used by the women; but
he says it is very large. He orders soap, a
dozen boxes at a time. With regard to all
substitutes fur soap, he condemns them.
Everyone of his laborers declares that soap
is the king of cleaners. A Boston firm sent
him a specimen case of "Savogran;" but,
after a fair trial, he found it was of no ac
count. The women were forced to use soap
as well, and they pronounced "Savogran" a
distinct failure.
The giant tower is only cleaned once a
month. The water which serves to run the
elevators is sent up to the tanks in the attic,
and thence used for the tower.
When Mr. Mercer had completed his
enumeration, a talk was obtained with one
or two of the workmen. They all admitted
that the work is light and well distributed,
but declared that they are kept busy all day.
A FAMILY OF WAEEI0ES.
The Claims of a Mother for Her Son's Ap
pointment to aCadetshlp.
The competitive examination for the va
cant naval cadetships at Annapolis from
Allegheny, will be held at City Hall in
that city, within a few weeks. In connec
tion with the applications the following
strong and interesting letter has been sent
to Colonel Biyne by Mrs. McCaffrey,
mother of one of the candidates:
Col. T. M. Hayne:
Dear Sin My son. W. A. McCaffrey, 17
years old, is an applicant for the vacant naval
cadetshlp. If he should pass the physical and
mental examinations, please give him any
chance be may deserve. We ask no favors, be
lieving tb&t ''every tub should stand upon its
own bottom." We have a good war record,
there being 14 of our men in tbe army. Some
of them answered Lincoln's first call for 75,000
men, and tbe remnant returned when Lee sur
rendered. William is my only son,
and he stands ont in bold relief
alone. his father having slept
these 13 years, with tbe saber's
cnt on his monument. There is only one of
tbe 14 soldiers remaining. He is a little- dried
up individual, of no use to himself as a worker
or anyone else, having left tbe original man in
the wilderness, and Is now calmly waiting for
the last "tattoo." Our family were dished out
in all shapes and styles. We had quarter
masters, provost marshals, cavalry captains,
lieutenants of infantry, artillery, high privates,
and teamsters. Our Runners poured crape and
cannister into the opposing forces at Gettys
burg, our riflemen guarded the highways and
byways, our cavalry wielded their sabers right
and lett and contested every inch of ground,
and In winter as scouts froze in their saddles.
Our infantry trndged the long, hot, dusty roads
ot Virginia, and some of them sleep there.
Our ambulance drivers gathered up tbe dead,
wounded and dying. As I said before, we ask
no favors, but it William should be successful
In time of need, he will keep his colors un
furled to the breeze while life lasts, and never
stow the white feather."
Respectfully yours,
Jult 23. Lottie McCaffeey.
