THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, "WEDNESDAY, JULY 10, 1889.
fOgjKXaESSgl
QUITE A BIG AFFAIR.
That New Wilkinsbnrg Kailroad May
be Traction or Electric
IT WILL COME CLEAR DOWlf TOWN,
Either tj an Independent Line or Hitched
to Citiiens' Cars.
THE SODTHSIDE TRACTION SCHEME
It is as good as settled that "Wilkinsbnrg
is to have direct connection with Pittsburg
by a street railway. The route is about
completed, and those connected with the en
terprise say work will be commenced on the
road as soon as the charter is obtained. The
corporators of "The Pittsburg and Wilkins
burg Railway Company" are W. W. Young,
President of the Lawrence Bank; P.
S. TJrling, James Fitzsimmoiis, lawyer;
Erasmus Hoevelcr. an East Liberty stock
dealer; W. G. Hastings, a real estate dealer of
the East End, and John Ferring. Th3 capital
stock is 3 0.000, divided Into 120 shares. It is
sot expected that this sum will build the road
and equip it, but this is merely a nucleus, and
it is expected the remaining stock will be easily
obtained.
The route named In tho application for the
charter starts at the Intersection of Matilda
street with Penn avenue, just abovo the new
Allegheny cemetery gates, and extends from
Matilda street to the Morningside road, thenco
to Stanton avenue, to Meadow street, to Fin
ley street, to Frankstown avenue, to Wood
street. Wilkinsburg, to Main street or Penn
avenue, to Water street, the Wilkinsburg
terminus.
ONE VERY IMPORTANT POINT.
It is not vet decided whether the line will
connect with the Penn avenue line at Matilda
street, or come to the city by a separate route.
Those seen on the matter yesterday would not
talk on this part of the plan. They have not
approached the Penn avenue traction folk in
regard to connections, but are waiting to get
their charter and routes under control. They
are considering running over the lines of the
Citizens' Company to Pittsburg; again, trans
f crime passengers, and if no arrangements of
this kind are entered into, they now have under
advisement three different routes from Matilda
street into the city. They would divulge
nothing in regard to these routes.
The section the road will rnn through has
not yet been tapped by any road, is some dis
tance from the Pennsylvauia Railroad, and
will open np a large tract. The route is a cir
cuitous one, not touching the territory of the
other lines at any point. The Morningside
road and Stanton avenue have large tracts of
land now given up to farming, yet well suited
for residences, w. W. Young ana Mr. Has
tings own roal estate along the line of tho road,
and Mr. Fitzsimmons also owns property there.
AN ELECTRIC STOEAGE SYSTEM.
The motive power has not been decided on.
but it will probably bo the new electric storage
system now being perfected by New Yorkers,
and if this should not be a success the road
will adopt the cable system, or possibly some
other electric scheme. The road will be about
five miles long to its intersection with the Penn
avenue line, and about seven miles long, should
it be extended to the city.
The men having hold of the enterprise have
enough capital among them to complete the
road without soliciting stock elsewhere. Mr.
Young will prooably be Secretary and Treas
urer, but the other officers have not been de
cided on. Mr. Hastings has taken a very
active part in the preparations so far. The
route and plan of the road have only been
under consideration two months, and nothinc
was said of it in public until it was necessary
to advertise the application for charter.
ON ME SOUTHSIDE.
Recently The Dispatch printed the plans
of a company which will build a bridge over
the Monongahela river from Ross street. It
was then stated that it was for a new traction
railroad. This road was chartered yesterday.
The company is called the Southside Traction
Railway Company and has a capital stock of
100,000. The stockholders are James A. Mc
Devitt,ol Lancaster, who holds 1,800 of the 2,000
shares; Joshua Rhodes. A. M. Keeper, A. F.
Keating. John F. Steel and T. P. Given, of
Pittsburg, The line will be single track, eight
miles long, beginning on Water street, at
the Southwestern terminus of the Trans
verse Passenger Railway; thence along
Water to Ross street, to South First street,
across the Monongahela river: thence to Mo
Kean street io South Third street, to Bing
ham, to South Seventeenth street, to Sidney,
to Sonth Eighteenth, to Jane, to South Twenty
ninth street, and return to the place of begin
ning by the same route. The branches are as
follows: First, leaving the main line at South
Eighteenth and Sidney streets, thence by Sid
ney to South Twenty-second, to main line at
Jane: second, leaving main line at Ross and
Water streets, thence to First avenue, thence
to Wood street, usinc 200 feet of the tracks of
the Transverse Passenger Railway Company to
form a circuit to Second avenue, thence by
Second avenue to Grant street, to First ave
nue, to Ross street, to Water street, at the
mainline.
OAKLAND AND SQUIRREL IIILL,
The directors of the Pittsburg Traction Rail
way held a meeting yesterday and -accepted the
ordinance giving them the right to construct
an electric railway feeder along Atwood, Bo
qnet and Ward streets, in Oakland. The con
tracts for the trading and pavine will be let
next week.
Yesterday Messrs. P. A. B. Wldener and W.
L. Elkins, of Philadelphia, accompanied by the
local officers of the Traction company and some
of the directors of the Squirrel Hill Railway,
started from the power bouse in Oakland and
went over the line of the Squirrel Hill Rail
way. Much satisfaction was expressed at the
manner in which the work has already been
done.and the various gentlemen of the traction
company were much pleased with their excur
sion. The contract for the building of the road
calls for its completion by the middle of Oc
tober, but the contractors say the work will be
finished by the middle of September. One of
the directors of the road to-day said: "The
road will be running by October. It is the in
tention to put In a switch and run our cars
right into the city by means of the traction
road. The cars will be run on our road by
means of an electric motor, until the traction
line is reached, when the cars will be coupled
on to the cable cars. This will be an excellent
arrangement both for the traction road and our
own. We will have five cars and the trips will
be made every ten minutes over the three
miles of our road from Fifth avenue to the
cemetery. On each car will bo placed two 15
horse power motors, which will develop enough
power to haul an extra car not equipped with a
motor; this last car will be run as a trail car on
the traction road. It is the intention to ex
tend the Squirrel Hill road down to the Wilk
insburg Valley In the near future."

They were a party or excursionists from Pittsburg-

parents. Someday they will determine to take a
rst of about two or three vears and go to Cali
fornia, bnt the scheme Is such a thoroughly good
one that It Is worth v of being Imitated by churches
throughout the country as li give the congrega

comitryat comparatively small expense.
The party reached town yesterday afternoon

THE DBUIIMERS' EXCURSION.
A Quiet Day Enjoyed by One-Thirtieth ns
ninny Drnmmera na Guests.
In point of comfort, the excursion and picnic
given by the Traveling Men's Commercial Club
yesterday was a success. The crowd started
out for comfort and subdued pleasure, and
many of them had their wives or sweethearts
with them. There was plenty of music and
dancing, and opportunity for rational enjoy
ment and rest, and the state of the weather
was conducive to quiet.
At 10:10 A. M. Captain Lew Clark was notified
by a quadruple toot on the whistle that it was
time to cast off his haw ser. and the Mayflower
dropped out into the stream. The band struck
up. Before reaching the Point bridge some
were threading the mazes of the dreamy waltz,
while others on the outskirts struck up the
double shuffle opposite the mouth of Sawmill
run. Fishing clubs dotted the banks for
miles along the shore.
On the way back it began to dawn on many
aboard that the play was "Hamlet" without
Hamlet in the cast. As near as cojld be
learned, there were six commercial travelers
aboard, moro or less, principally less. Captain
Clark explained that it didn't make any differ
ence financially, as there had been several
times as many people who bought tickets as
the boat could carry.
About 3 o'clock dancing ceasetLand the crowd
enjoyed the scenery for a change, and by the
way, it can be stated without a shade of exag
geration, that in its way it is as fine as that of
the Hudson or the Rhine, and Pilot William
McDonald was abetter guide than the profes
sionals who speak their pieces in Europe.

They Listen to a Speech on Marriage
na n Failure A Picnic Novelty.
The Cumberland Presbyterian or Union Park
Sabbath School, of North and Grand avenues,
Allegheny, held a picnic at Wildwood Grove,
on tho P. fc W. Railroad yesterday. A novel
feature was the address by Rev. J. H. Barnett,
pastor of the church, on the subject of "The
Witty and Amusing Side ot Pulpit and Plat
form," and that also of Mr. John Thresher, an
Alleghenyjeweler, on the difficult question,
"Is Marriage a Failure?"
Mr. Thresher said that man was all powerful,
but nevertheless he cannot subdue woman.
Ho referred to the discussion in the past ages
on wine, king and woman as to which was the
mightiest. He believed that those who held
woman as the migbtest were In the majority.
"Men are in subjection to women and you can
not make it otherwise." be continued. "The
cause ot so many failures in marriage is be
cause men and women do not show themselves
in their true colors to each other when court
ing. I think marriages in a 'squire's office are
enough to start young married people on the
wrong track. Think of a weddinc being per
formed in a dirty, little close office and the
'Squire asking God's blessing on you.
On the other hand vows made in a
church are held more sacred. The
great reason of marriage, by magistrates
is the union of those of the opposite religious
views. This leads to after discussions between
husband and wife as to which church their
children shall be baptized in, and you will find,
if you will examine the records of the different
courts, that thero are more cases of divorce
springing directly from this cause than from
any other. To make a happy marriage I should
advise always that tho wife have full full con
trol of the children, at least the girls. Tho
woman will have ber own way anyhow, and it
will be best to give your consent rather than
have her do as she pleases."
He quoted Judge Collier, who, he stated, said
that a woman had no right to rush to court for
a divorce just when her husband struck her
because she was the cause by exasperating
him. He also quoted Judge White, who said
that married peoplo should have a great deal
of forbearance, one to the other. Intemper
ance was also spoken of. He made It plain
how women could stop it. Each should try to
please the other in all things, but it would not
do to please the woman too much, as It might
gradually wear out your life, as was the case
with his father, who was a preacher, and who,
he said, was tortured to death trying to please
the women ot his church. He did not think
marriage was a failure, if all his suggestions
were followed out.
Rev. Mr. Barnett then told some anecdotes
and reminiscences about preachers. A number
that be related involve ministers who are still
preaching in Pittsburg, and for that reason he
withheld the names.
