GAS CONSOLIDATION.
. , "
The'Ohio Valley Company Increases
Jts Stock by Just $60,000.
BOTH GASES ARE TO BE FDKKISHED
It Sewictlej Borough in the Grasp of i
Great Gas Monopoly ?
THE EESDLT OP A SPECIAL ELECTION
By recent deal in the Sewickler Valley,
theOhio Valley Gas Company become the
only'corporation in the -world furnishing
two kinds of gas to easterners. The consoli
dation ot artificial and natural gas interests
in Sewickley was consummated yesterday
byth&aborbtlon of the Sewickley Illum
inating Gas Company by the Ohio Valley
Gas Company;
The deal between the two companies -was
arranged on the 1st of last April, and in
orderto provide tbe fund for the purchase
money agreed upon, the officials ot the Ohio
Valley Natural Gas Company advertised a
special election for the Increase of the capital
stock of the company from 1100.000 to 1160,000.
The election was held yesterday afternoon
and the rote for the increase was unanimous,
not'one stockholder dissenting from the propo
sition. There were 45 stockholders, all of
whom were either present or represented by
proxy. By this more the citisens ot Sewickley
become dependent upon the Ohio Valley Com
pany or both light and heat, the concentra
tion of interests being Intended to Insure bet
ter serrice in both departments.
GAS TXOFLE BBANCHIXO OUT.
Mr. J. M. Rogers, secretary of the company,
who furnished the aboTe facts to a Dispatch
representative, was asked if the amalgamation
of gases meant better serrice in both depart
ments. He said: "Oh, yes. "We shall impi-ore
matters all the way around. Somo of the arti
ficial gas piping is pretty old the company has
been doing business in the borough 18 years
and we shall relay a good deal of pipe and
Introduce newer methods of manufacture
eventually. The cost of the acquired
property was not quite the amount of the in
crease of stock, and we shall use seTeral thou
sand dollars in both the artificial and natural
gas departments. We are drilling two new
wells at Lectsdale ana will lay a new six-inch
pipe from the field to the borough, the pipe and
connections probably reaching fire miles in
length. We were short of gas last winter sev
eral times, and want to place onrselres in such
shape as to bare no trouble of that nature this
winter."
A NATURAL OAS TRUTH.
"Do you find that your present wells giro out
alter long use?" aneried the, reporter.
"Most certainly we do," said Mr. Rogers, and
so do all the other gas companies, if they only
tell the truth. Gas wells hare their off times
and some of our best occasionally relax In their
How in a most raysterio.is manner. Several
wells we used to depend upon are almost worth
less now, and we find it necessary to keen the
drill going all the time. We shall have no trou
ble about gas supply this winter, I think."
"Is the new issue of stock bespokenf"
"No, but there will be no trouble in floating
It. The last sale of stock made was at 40 and
par is SO. The company is now in every respect
where it wants to be."
SOME CITIZENS KICK.
The possible monopoly that may arise In both
kinds of ga is not looked upon with favor, ap
parently, by some citizens of the -abstinence"
borough. One of them, who does business in
Pittsburg, was doing some energetic growling
oyer the situation, and said that there were
several -who feared that prices would 'be made
to suit th- company in the future, and
that past experience had made the citi
zens distrustful of the illiberal methods of
the company as witnessed in the esses ot citi
zens fighting overcharges last winter during
and before the fight made by the Allegheny
Citizens' Committee against the Allegheny
Light Company and the Ohio Valley Company
before the Supreme Court. The decision of
that tribunal had held forth little encourage
zuent to consumers, and be, for one. feared that
prices would be put up in both kinds ot gas be
fore cold weather. The company had nothing
to say in regard to it future financial policy.
MORE BIG BAEGUN-3
in Seeaad Pianos and Organs at Metier Si
Hoene'a,
"Within the last week we have received a
number of" good pianos which we had rented
during the spring. The parties using them
are absent from the city during the summer,
and we return them to our warerooms.
These instruments, along with others, -we
will dispose of at a big reduction and on
easy terms. Many of the -well-known makes
are among these instruments, and anyone
wanting a good piano or organ at a low
price shonld accept this opportunity. "W
have some pianos as low as $25; also some
very low-priced organs. The little folks
can now find plenty of time to practice,
which would not interfere with school
studies and be very profitable to them.
These pianos will answer nicely. Come and
see these. Perhaps yon may not need one,
but yon have a friend who does and would
be glad of this opportunity.
A number of good second-hand organs
also on hand. Prices very low on these.
