And Whether the Breaking of the Dam Was Due to Kegllgence. flE IS YEEI MUCH IN EARNEST Ana Will Obtain Expert Testimony and Blft the Hitter to the Bottom. Coroner Evans, of Cambria county, seems determined to do all in bis power to fix the responsibility for the recent disaster, or at least to ascertain whether negligence was the cause of the dam breaking. He in tends to obtain the testimony of expert en gineers who haTe visited South Pork lately. He says he has beard of no damage suits being brought against the fishing club. IFBOX A EXACT COBBXSFOXDXXT. Johnstowx, June 20. Coroner Evans, of Cambria county, will resume the work of investigation next "Wednesday in earn est. So far he has been too busy, caring for the living, to proceed. The Coroner is a line-looking old man of massive proportions and determined expression. He is a man of strength, and if the jurymen partake somewhat of the qualities of the Coroner, Something is likely to drop in the way of a startling decision. Coroner Evans is very much in earnest, and means to place the responsibility for the recent terrible disas ter, if, indeed, human negligence had any thing to do with the frightful catastrophe. In a short chat to-day Dr. Evans said: "I will make an effort, when the jury meets, to secure some expert testimony about the condition of the dam. I have in mind John Fulton, who examined the reser- jroir, and a draughtsman at Jloxham, whose iiame I hare forgotten. I understand other I mgineers have inspected the structure, but I 'l! ave been so busy that I do not even know 1 EXPEBT TESTIMOXT WANTED. " At this point the reporter suggested Engineer Brinkerhoff, of the Mining and Civil Engineering Journal, and some others who had been at South Fork. Mr. Drinker lioflfs opinion of the dam has already ap peared in The Dispatch. The Coroner wrote down the names suggested, and said lie would endeavor to secure sworn deposi tions of theirtestimony. Continuing, Coro ner Evans said: "I will take the jury to the dam if I can't get satisfactory evidence. The trouble is that the Coroner has not the control of any funds. I can't pay experts to go to South Fork and examine the dam forme. In fact, I am not allowed by law to pay witnesses, but I can compel them to attend the hear ing. From what I am told and have read, the dam was withont a flood-gate of any kind to relieve the pressure of the water. The reason given by the mem bers of the club, is that they were ATBAID OF LOSING THE FISH. "It seems to me they value the finny tribe more than the human race. I think they could easily have had llood-gates in the dam, and prevented the fish from escaping by. the use of screens. But there is no use talking about that now. I see the "West moreland county jury has rendered a ver dict, and all 1 can see in it is that so many people died from the effects of a flood, caused presumably by the breaking of the dam at South Fork. I should think there is not much doubt about that by this time. I haven't heard of any damage suits as yet. I lost my library and surgical instruments, and my office is ruined; but $1,000 will cover my entire loss. I was more fortunate than my neighbors." COXTBIBUTIONS OP CLUB MEMBERS. The Coroner wanted to know if the dam people had contributed anything to the suf ferers, and if so, ho w much. The reporter "was unable to answer this question, but as many of them are very charitable men, I as sured him that 1 thought some at least had contributed liberally. He then asked if 3fr. Carnegie had given much money, but Shis generosity is on record. It is expected there will be some trouble when the time comes to lay out the lots. Manv of the boundary lines and landmarks have been washed away, and some litigation' 2s prouaoie. xiowever, me pian 01 me town and the records of all deeds are pre served at the Court House in Ebensburg, and after all the various plots may be lo cated withont much wrangling. At any rate there is no nse borrowing trouble and worriment Concerning this vexed ques tion, Coroner Evans said: SO GBEAT DIFFICULTY ANTICIPATED. "I do not think there will be much trou ble on this score. In the annihilated parts of the town the streets were nearly all payed with Belgian blocks, and these remain in tact "With the streets definitely located, I can't see that the engineers will have much trouble to renew the plan of the town, not only on paper, but on the earth." a Coroner Evans did not think a consulta tion of the Coroners of the different counties Vould be called. He hasn't heard what the officials of Indiana and Armstrong counties have done. Coroner Hammer and the Com missioners of "Westmoreland county left the reporters under the impression that the ver dict of their jury would be pretty salty, but when they came to pen their decision, they weren't even sure that the South Fork dam had caused the flood. Coroner Evans doesn't say much on this subject, because he is not allowed, but if anybody can be held re sponsible for the breaking of that dam the jury will try to name them. Israel. Nashville, Tenn., June 20. All the mail that left the Nashville, postoffice for the South on the night of May 7 has disap peared. The fact has been withheld by the postoffice officials that the Investigation might not be hampered. For two days a Government inspector or detective has been in the city, but he has proceeded so quietly that his presence has been known to only attaches of the department, and not all of them were aware of his coming. The mail for Southern points as far as New Orleans was arranged as usual, put in a pouch, locked tip and delivered at the doer of the postoffice to the driver of the wagon which carries mail to the depot The pouch was locked up in this wagon, which drove off toward the depot and that Is the last heard of it asyet The loss of the pouch was detected in two or three days, and in this way: According to a rule of the Government, a number of Southern postoffices are required to daily remit io the Nashville postoffice any excess of receipts oyer a certain sum, which varies according to the volume of business done at a place. This is done that no large amount of money may be stopped at any office. Nashville in turn makes a daily remittance to Louisville, and Louisville to New York. Jieceipts for these remittances are daily sent to the postmasters forwarding the money. On May 9 the postmaster! to whom receipts were due from Dr.' Cnrrer for remittances of May 6, wrote that their vouchers had not arrived. The banks at Franklin. Columbia and Pulaski then noti fied him of the failure to get checks, etc. Proof that the entire mail from Nashville to the South bad disappeared rapidly accumu lated, and Dr. Currer made an investiga tion. He learned, it is stated, that the mail pouch had been delivered at the door of the'postoffice as usual to the driver at Ihe contractors wagon. The mail clerk on the train which should have received the pack ages stated that he bad never seen anything otit. The pouch, it was thus reasoned, had disappeared after leaving the postoffice. Bnt how? To settle that question Dr. Currer on May 13, notified the department at "Washington that it might make an investigation. Nothing further was heard in this connection until, as stated, Mr. Stubbs, a special agent, came to Nash ville last Tuesday to hunt the affair down. It is impossible now to learn how much money was in the mail. It was destined for a large and important territory, and the pre sumption is that the pouch contained much valuable matter. Jel7-MF Cured of Catarrhal Asthma, Mrs. Alice Brownhill. an English lady, bnt who has lived in this country for nearly two years, has for the past ten years been badly afflicted with asthma. It was produced by a catarrhal poison In her system that was slowly but surely doing its deadly work. A part of the secretion that formed in her head was dis charged through her nose, and a part dropped down the back part of her throat and which, setting up an irritated condition in her lnngs, produced asthma. She coughed, and her breath at times was very short She had pains under her shoulder Wades, and also over her eyes. Her appetite was very poor, and the little food she was able to eat gave her Etomach much dis tress and belching of eas, and every morning she would vomit up her food. As has been stated, her breath was very short, and every time she caught a cold she would have to be bolstered up in bed during the night in order to breathe. "When she applied, last April, to the physicians of the Catarrh and Dyspepsia Institute for treatment, the wheezing fn her lungs could be beard all over the house.
