THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, "WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 1889.
THECEOMTEAGEDY
Alexander Sullivan's Secrets Are to
Be Given to the Grand Jury.
M1VATE TELEGKAMS EXAMINED.
A Host of Witnesses Are Called Upon to
Give Their Evidence.
FA1HEE DOEXEE PLACED IN THE BOX
Chicago. June 18. The sensational in
cident of the Cronin grand jury this morn
ing was the refusal of "William E. Bell, of
the AVestern Union Telegraph Company, to
obey an order of the jury to produce mes
sages passing between Alexander Sullivan,
Dan Coughlin, P. O'Sullivan, John J.
Maroney and G. W. Melville. Mr. Bell
maintained that it was against the rules of
the company to produce such messages and
that the statutes of the State of Illinois ini
X)scd a fine of $5,000 upon a telegraph
company for disclosing the contents of any
personal or business message passing over
its lines.
After all attempts to induce the witness
to obey had tailed, the jury, headed by
States Attorney Longenccker, repaired to
Judge Sheppard's room, and appealed to
His Honor to issue an order directing the
witness to answer under pain of contempt
and commitment Charles S. Holt, attor
ney ior the "Western Union, appeared in
behalf of the witness, and stated that while
the company desired in every way to assist
the ends of justice, it did not desire to vol
untarily violate the statutes of the State
and disclose the messages of its patrons upon
the mere request of a grand jury.
TIIEY WOULD SUBMIT.
If the Court thought fit to -issue an order
directing the witness under pain of con
tempt to produce the messages the company
would then consider this a bar to any possi
ble civil prosecution by patrons and the
witness would obey the order. He thought,
though, the jury should more explicitly de
scribe the messages wanted, their present
request being more in the nature of a gen
eral drag net. States Attorney Longenecker
held that the jury could not definitely de
scribe the contents of messages sent.
"What the jury wanted was the right to
examine all and any messages that might
have passed between any of the suspected
parties since March 1. The jury alone
could be the judge of their relevancy to the
case. Mr. Holt objected somewhat to an or
der of such sweeping nature, but the Judge
lully sustained the States Attorney and an
order was spread upon the record directing
the witness under pain ot contempt and
commitment to jail to produce any and all
messages, cablegrams, or copies thereof in
the Chicago office passing between Alexan
der Sullivan, Dan Coughlin, P. O'Sulli
van, John J. Maroney, G. "W. Melville and
Charles McDonald, either under their true
name or any alias, or between either of these
men and any other person or persons, since
the first of March last
AITEBTHE MESSAGES.
The officers of the "Western Union stated
that five men had been employed two days
searching among the records for originals or
copies of the messages desired, and that
they would now be promptly spread before
the jury. Maurice Morris, a friend of Dr.
Cronin, was before the jury this morning
and told how the doctor had frequently stated
thathe had incurred the enmity or certain
persons high in authority in Irish societies
and that he had fears for his life.
"William Mulcahy, the suspect about
whom so much has been written, was
closeted with the jury for nearly an hour
and those who heard his story became con
vinced that he had no connection with the
crime. He showed that lie had not gone to
work for O'Sullivan until several days after
the date of the murder, and, from his evi
dence, did not appear to know much about
O'Sullivan or his associates. He was asked
particularly about the movements of O'Sul
livan during the days following the murder,
but stated that they were in no wise sus
picions and that O'Sullivan seemed to be
devoting more time to the ice business than
any other outside affair.
He stated that he had never, to his knowl
edge, seen O'Sullivan and Coughlin together
during those times, bnt that he might possi
bly be mistaken on that point, as he was not
well acquainted with Coughlin. Altogether
Mr. Mulcahy was a very unprofitable wit
ness, and the jury obtained no information
of consequence from his cross-examination.
eating intimacy between O'Sullivan and
Dan Coughlin.
Dennis O'Conner, Secretary of Camp 20,
was questioned at length regarding Clan-na-Gael
affairs, but warmly disclaimed any
knowledge of a secret trial and sentence of
Dr. Cronin on the charge of treason.
Charles Carlson and Mrs. Lindgren, his
sister, were upon the stand a few minutes,
and the latter thought the photograph of
Burke resembled somewhat one of the men
who rented the cottage. Young Carlson
also Admitted resemblance, butfailedto find
it striking.
THAT FATAL NIGHT.
Miss McCormiok, asister of Mrs. "Whalen,
stated that she was at O'Sullivan's house
the night of the murder and remembered
that the ice man got up aboat 10 o'clock or
later to admit a couple of his employes who
had spent the evening in some part of Lake
View. This statement agreed with the evi
dence of a couple of the ice men, themselves,
who earlier in the day testified to having
entered the house about that hour and been
admitted by O'Sullivan.
Frank T. Johnson, formerly a confidential
clerk of J. Lester & Co., brokers, testified
in regard to certain fortunate speculations
of Alexander Sullivan and is alleged to
have substantiated the story that Sullivan
alter a certain lucky deal made him a muni-
ncent cash present.
Father Dorner was called to the stand and
asked to give the particulars of P. "W.
Dunne's charge of embezzlement against
Alexander Sullivan, and the reverend
gentleman's subsequent investigation of this
charge by agreement of the principals.
Father Dorney related as nearly as his
memory would permit the circumstances of
this charge, and stated that it was only
after a
FULL INVESTIGATION
of the affairs of Sullivan and the amount of
his annual income that he pronounced
Dunne's charge groundless. The .reverend
gentleman was also questioned closely re
garding his knowledge of Clan-na-Gael or
ganizations, but failed to disclose any par
ticular knowledge of their workings.
Robert "Warren, a Board of Trade man,
and Henry Baughart and "William J.
Lynch were also called to the stand upon
somebodys assertion that they knew some
thing of the case, but they all disclaimed
all knowledge of or acquaintance with any
of the actors in the tragedv, and were greatly
surprised that they should have been sub
poenaed. TAYLOR fc DEAN'S.

A Young Man Arretted In Boston for
Forgery In San Francisco.
rsrZCL&L TZLEGKAM TO THE DISFATCn.l
Boston, June 18. This morning a
smart-looking young man, accompanied by
a handsome blonde, arrived in this city on

with the aid ot a local inspector, had in
vaded the room assigned the oouple, and the
young man was hustled up to police head
quarters, leaving the handsome blonde in
tears. His name is John B. Kenney, alias

BENNETT Monday. June 17, at 3:15P. si.,
KOX MUCH IXFOKMATIOir.
Fifteen or 20 witnesses were before the
grand jury this afternoon, but by far the
greater number were singularly devoid of
information. Bobert Boyington, Pat Bren
nan and James Hinehan, all employes of
Iceman O'Sullivan, testified to the habits
and demeanor of their employer about the
time and previous to the murder, and were
particularly questioned as to his relations
with Coughlin and Woodruff They knew
nothing of O'Sullivan's intimacy with
Coughlin. and all testified that thev had
never seen Woodruff, either at the icehouse
or any place else.
llaloney, the saloon keeper, told about
the row in his place between ex-Officer
Boach on one side and Coughlin and O'Sul
livan on the other; and Boach was called
and corroborated this story, and otherwise
testified to the intimacy between Coughlin
and the ice man.
The Carisons were again called to testify
as to certain incidents in connection with the
renting and occupancy of the cottage and
were given another chance to identify in the
picture of Martin Burke, the man Williams
who rented the cottage. They did not appear
any more certain of his identity than yester
day; and the jury was loth to return an
indictment against Burke without addi
tional evidence. In this the jurors failed to
agree with Chief Hubbard, who appeared
before the jury and urged the prompt indict
ment of Burke.
SULLIVAN 'S FBIENDS.
Henry Stoltenberg, Alleiander Sullivan's
clerk, was questioned, at length regarding
the alleged intimacy between the Irish
leader and Dan Coughlin, bnt failed to
fulfill the expectations of the jury. He
knew nothing of Coughlin's calls at- the
lawyer's office, but admitted that the
former might have entered Sullivan's
private room without being observed
by the rest ci the firm.
Mrs. Bich, who lives on Ashland avenue,
diagonally across from the Carlson cottage,
was called upon to describe the people
whom she observed at different times enter
ing the cottage and loitering around the ice
house, bnt she failed to describe any one
who bore accurate resemblance to Burke,
and was unable to identify his photograph
as that of any one she had ever seen.
Thomas Given, an emulove of the den.irt-
xnent, testified that he knew Bnrke during
the latter'a recent residence in the city, but
had no knowledge ofhis 'intimacy with
O'Sullivan, Coughlin or any other of the
suspected persons. T. J. Conway told the
jurr that he was intimately acquainted
withDr. Cronin during his life time, and
that the latter had frequently expressed the
conviction that his life was "in danger and
that he was liable to be murdered at any
time by emissaries of prominent Irish
leaders.'
XKTO THE SECBETS.
Conway also stated that he was a member
of the -Riverside uamp ot the Clan-na-Gael
and had heard John F. Beggs' speech de
nouncing Cronin. John F. Beggi himself
was next called upon "by the jury, bnt his
evidence contained nothing new and was
substantially a repetition of his testimony
of yesterday,
E. G. Dunne, William J. Hynes law
partner, was on the stand a few minutes,
but failed to relate anything that deserved
the dignity of testimony and was followed
by James Qninn, the 'Clark street hatter,
y who again testified to certain incidents indi-

Talking at Ran
dom. Consider statements about
prices calmly. One man may
mean a great deal with plain
words about them. Another
may mean very little with ex-travagant,high-sounding
ones.
The real question if it be
clothing is not whether it is
marvelously told about, but
whether it is substantial and
worth the price.
We don't aspire to write
glowing advertisements, but
to make you acquainted with
our make of clothing. The
cloth, workmanship, style and
low price will talkto the point.
