A. HELP TO BOTH SIDES.
Dlsadvantases to Mnnufnctnrers nnd Em

Again for President A Conference on
Tin Plato Tlie Banquet to John Jarrett
Other Industrial Items.
The Amalgamated Association of Iron
and Steel Workers are making great strides
in Eastern Pennsylvania in the way of
organization, and it is probable that at the
nest convention they will be strong enongh
Xo present a scale to the eastern manufac
turers. If they do -not sign it the Amal
rimiated men will be in a position to enforce
their demands. At the convention yester
day John Gallagher, who was appointed a
special organizer at the last convention lor
the eastern part of the State, reported that
he had organized since December 1 22 new
lodges in different towns, and the membership
was increasing at each meeting.
Good for Employer nnd Workman.
This is good news not only to the members ot
tho association, bnttotbe iron manufacturers
here as well. The latter have been placed at a
disadvantage when competing with their east
ern neighbors, on acconnt of the latter securing
their labor cheaper than the Pittsburgers
could. In some mills in the East, where the
Amalgamated Association has no representa
tion, manufacturers only pay ?3S0per ton for
Eiiddllng. while the Pittsburg manufacturers
ad to pay So 50 for the same work. On account
of this great difference in the price of labor,
tho Pittsburg manufacturers sent many re
quests to the Amalcamated Association to or
ganize the Eastern mills.
At the convention yesterday a communica
tion wa received from St. David's Benevolent
Welsh Society extending an invitation to the
delegates to attend the reception to be tendered
John Jarrett Satnrdav evening at Lafayette
HalL The object of tho gathering lull be to
lwd farewell to Mr. Jarrett before his departure
for Birmingham. England. The majority of
tho delegates will attend the reception on ac
count of Mr. Jarrttt being one of the ex-Presi-.
dents of the Association.
A Request lo President Welbc.
A resolution was read from Harmony Lodge
No. 18 requesting President "VVeihe to consent
to be a candidate for re-election. Acommittee
of 11 members was appointed to wait upon the
President and ascertain if he would comply
with the request.
In the afternoon a communication was re
ceived from the United States Tin Plate Com
panv. asking that a committee be appointed to
confer with that firm relative to the sheet and
tin plate business. This is In regard to the
wage scale effecting these departments. Mr.
Cronemj er, the president of tho company. was
requested to appear betore the Reclassifica
tion Committee, which was appointed last
week.
The report of the Committee on Johnstown
Sufferers was read. It showed that 2,100 worth
of supplies had been distributed among the
sufferers. They sent the first car
load of goods into Woodvalc, where
the most suffering existed among the noople,
A fact to be commended is the action of the
Amalgamated Association in this matter.
Heretofore the name of Johnstown and its
associations with the Cambria Iron Works and
the Gautier steel department was held in ab
horrence and spoken of in obnoxious con
tempt by the members of the association.
This was due to the fact that the proprietors of
the mills would not allow any union to organize
their men and paid lower wages than other mill
owners.
Accompanying the report was a letter from
the survivors of Woodvale. thanking the asso
ciation for their assistance at that place and at
Cambria City.
KAISING A HOWL.
Pllttbnrff nnd Western Road Will Mot
Allow Cnrs to Go Off" Their Line.
There is trouble between the Baltimore and
OhIfl ana Pittsburg and Western Railroads
on an order, issued a tew days ago by General
Manager. McDonald, to the effect that no Pitts
burg and Western cars were to go off the line
of tie road.
This affects the shippers of coal alone the
Baltimore and Ohio who have been sending
their outpnt to the lakes via the Pittsburg and
"Western. As the latter got the most haul out
of the cars, it would naturally be supposed that
they would furnish the cars to the Baltimore
and Ohio coal operators. General Manager
McDonald issued an order to the effect that no
Pittsburg and Western cars be sent on any
other road, and this would necessitate a trans
fer of freight at junction points. The reason
given for the order is, that business is so heavy
on the Pittsburg and Western that no cars can
be allowed to go ont of the local trade.
THE DELEGATES ELECTED.
Green Bottle Glass Blowers Who Will At
L tend the Next CouTentlon,
L. A. 6111, of D. A. 143, green bottle blowers,
have elected the following delegates to the an
nual convention of the district, to be held at
Atlantic City July 10: D. A.Hayes, George
Kern, T. Havey, William F. Sinclair, P.Havey,
J. Hirsch, Louis Banner and J. M. Miller.
The annual convention of D. A. 119, which
embraces all the Knights of Labor green bottle
blowers in the Eart. will be held at the same
time and place. The most Important business
to come before both bodies will be the ques
tion of amalgamating the two districts. Efforts
to have all the green bottle men all over the
country In one district have been going on for
some time. Those who are agitating the meas
ure say it would make a more thorough organ
ization and preserve a unanimity of action
upon all matters affecting tho trade.

city, a tug of war between members of L. U.

former race President Smith will be entered.
He is now training for the event.
Two miners fcucd.
Rodger Hartley, the owner of a Banksville

This Is Commendable.
The wholesale merchants of this city are
irritated by their failure to get into Johnstown
and resume business with the merchants there.
Thoy propose to assist the 'mountalners to tret
in shape again and will give them ample time
to sqnare up old accounts and encourage the
contracting of new ones. The wholesalers have
addressed a communication to Adjutant Gen
eral Hastings asking for permits to pass into
the town. It is signed largely.
Mlllvnle's Incendiary Fire.
The fire in Mlllvale early yesterday morning,
by which seven frame houses belonging to
Thomas Watkins were destroyed, was of sup
posed Incendiary origin, as oil was found
thrown around in several places. Two colored
families, Dran and Cooper, escaped in their
night clothes. The loss is about $4,000. Insured
in the Boatmen's and Continental companies.

MEN OF SOUND JUDGMENT
Will Tote Against It.
Because prohibition was introduced into
Pennsylvania as a fraud, it has been nursed
here as a fraud.
It is wrapped in the livery of heaven, but
it comes to serve the devil. It comes to
regulate by law our appetites and our daily
lives. It comes to tear down liberty and
build up fanaticism, hypocrisy and intoler
ance. It comes to confiscate by a legislative
decree the property of many of our fellow
citizens. It comes to send spies, detectives
and informers into our homes; to have us ar
rested and carried before courts and con
demned to fines and imprisonment. It
comes to dissipate the sunlight of happiness,
fieaceand prosperity mwhich. we are now
ivinjf, and to fill our land with alienations,
estrangements and bitterness. It comes to
bring us evil, only evil, andthatcontinually.
Let us rise up in our might like one man,
overwhelm it with such a demonstration of
popular indignation that we will never hear
of it again in Pennsylvania as long as grass
grows or water runs.

Bownre of Over-Confidence.
The opponents of the prohibitory amend
ment should indnlge in no illusions in re
gard to the character of this campaign.
Undue confidence is sometimes as fatal to a
cause as indifference and apathy. It is a
great mistake to snpposc, because of the
absence of noise and excitement in the con
test, that the Prohibitionists are not busily
at work, They are making a canvass from
door to door. There is scarcely a "house in
the Commonwealth that has not received a
liberal supply of prohibitionist documents.
It is true that most of this campaign litera
ture is sadly defective in argument; that it
appeals to the emotions rather than to the
sober judgment of voters; that it grossly
misrepresents the situation in Maine, Iowa
and Kansas, and that its conclusions from
statistics of crime and vice are utterly ab
surd but it will not do to underrate this
method of controversy. Adroit appeals to
sentiment and imposing arrays of doctored
social statistics have often proved more
effective in winning votes than the soundest
arguments addressed to the reason.
A strong reliance of the advocates of pro
hibition is in a light vote on June 18. In
stead of permitting the question to be de
cided at the general election by a full vote
of the neonle. thev easily persuaded the
Legislature to fix a special election day in
the season ot tne year wnen inejarmer win
be busy with hay-making. While they ex
pect to bring the last supporter ot prohibi
tion to the polls by appeals to the spirit of
fanaticism, they anticipate a small vote of
its opponents in the agricultural portions of
the State. This expectation is cherished
especially in regard to the steady and sober
farmers ol Lancaster, Berks, Northampton,
Lebanon and other counties in which the
"Pennsylvania Dutch" element predomi
nates. Forewarned is forearmed. If the oppo
nents of prohibition shall come out in their
strength on the 18th of June this question
will be so completely settled that it will npt
be agitated again in Pennsylvania within
the present generation. In order to save a
half day in hay harvest the farmers ot the
State should not neglect the duty of voting
against a measnre that is as unnecessary as
it would be futile. As the memorial of the
members of the bar of Philadelphia has
shown, the Legislature now possesses all tho
power to prohibit the manufacture and sale
of liquor which this amendment could con
vey. But while statutory prohibition could
be readily repealed when seen to be imprac
ticable and disastrous, this amendment, if
adopted, would be fastened upon the people
ot Pennsylvania for years to come, and the
Legislature would be rendered powerless to
uass any law to regulate the liquor traffic
and restrain its abuses.
The Bill of Righto declares that "all men"
shall have the right of pursuing their own
happiness, and that "the people shall be se
cure in their persons, houses, papers and pos
sessions from unreasonable searches and
seizures." This amendment would be in
flagrant inconsistency with these guarantees.
Prohibition never has been and never can be
enforced without violating inherent and in
defeasible rights of the people.
The issue involved in this contest is, there
fore, of snch Jranscendant moment that no
citizen of Pennsylvania who values the fund
amental principles of personal liberty and
who would preserve the organic law "of the
State irom mutilation will be prevented by
business or pleasure from recording his vote
against the prohibitory amendment on the
18th of June.
