The announcement was made early yesterday
afternoon by the Pennsylvania Railroad offi
cials that they had succeeded in making con-
section with the East by way of the Allegheny
Valley and Philadelphia and Erie.
This mil make the trip irom here to "nua
delpbia somewhat longer than in the usual
was but the company are in hopes that it will
not last more than four or five days at most.
The following dispatch from Philadelphia
states very clearly the manner in which the
trains will bo run, and the various connections
that will be made.
The Detailed Arrangement.
Philadelphia. June 7.
The Pennsylvania Railroad is at last able to
announce- the resumption of the running of
through passenger trains from New York via
Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Lock Haven and the
Allegheny Valley Railroad to Pittsburg. The
route is made up as follows: Trains will leave
the main line atHarrisburg and proceed on the
Northern Central branch to Sunbury. At that
place they will be taken across the
river in a. steam ferryboat, and thence
the all-rail route will be by way of
Lock Haven, Renovo and Driftwood. At tho
latter place, the Allegheny Valley Railroad
tracks will be taken and thence to Pittsburg.
It will be necessary to use this route for at
least four days yet, the work of repairing the
bridges between Lcwistown and Altoona on
the middle division and of the breaks west of
Altoona being carried on as rapidly as is con
sistent witi perfect safety. The Montgomery
bridge, it is expected, will be finished to-morrow
and the transfer of passengers by ferry
will be done away with, the trains running di
rect to Pittsburg over the bridge.
Other announcements of the opening up of
travel are included in the following bulletin is
sued by General Passenger Agent Wood this
afternoon: ,-Tbe Pennsylvania Railroad Com
pany announces the resumption of trains on
their lines to and from Pittsburg Yia Sunbury,
Driftwood and the Allegheny Valley Railroad
as follows:
East-Train No. 6, leaving Pittsburg at
7J5 o'clock to-night, and No. 8, leav
Ug Pittsburg at 8 A. M. to-morrow
(Saturday) will run through to Philadel
phia and New York with sleeping cars on the
night trains as far as Sunbury. connecting at
Driftwood with trains to and from Erie and at
Lock Haven with trains to and from Altoona,
noints on the main line as far east as Hunting
don and at other points on the Hollidavsburg
branch. Bald Eagle Valley Railroad, Tyrone
division of the Clearfield branches.
West Train No. 3, leaving New York at 8 P.
1L and Philadelphia at 11:25 to-night
with Bleeping car to Sunbury: and
train No. X leaving New York at 9 A. M.
and Philadelphia at 11:50 A. sl. to-morrow (Sat
urday), will run to Pittsburg via Sunbury and
Driftwood with same connections as above for
Erie, Altoona, Huntingdon, Hollidavsburg,
Bald Eagle Valley Railroad, Tyrone division
and Clearfield branches.
All these trains will connect to and from
Baltimore and Washington and the South and
Cumberland Valley points via Harnsburg.
Keeping Back Sightseers.
The Pennsylvania 2 Railraod officials are
striving to do all in their power to keep the
vast army of sightseers away from Johnstown,
and have posted very positive notices to the
effect that no tickets will be sold to any point
eastof Bolivar, which is fully 20 miles from
Johnstown This has the etfectof dampeningthe
ardor of a nnmber of the curious, but in some
instances it produces the angriest kind of anger.
There was a party of pretty prominent and de--cidedly
mad railroad officials from the West.
Thev were provided with annual
passes over the Pennsylvania Railroad
and were bound for Johnstown
just to see what the place looked like. They
were informed that their passes were not good
east of Bolivar, and although they expostulated
anil swore. It accompllsheiT.oothing, and they
rerorned to the West wtthont.getting.ta Johns
town. Several people, however, are so intent
on going that they buy tickets to Bolivar and
walk the balance of the way.
Train Dispatcher Culp has doubtless the hard
est time of any of the officials at the depot.
Since Friday night a week ago he has slept
probably about ten hours in all, and has not
.takena single meal at his home. His life is
also

to him, by the crowds of people who daily be
siege his office inquiring for missing friends.
.Mr. Culp has no way of ascertaining who has
. been lost or saved, and is unable to answer the
" questions, but the people insist in going there.
One-man on Thursday visited the office nine
times during the day, but could not obtain any
information.
Word was received yesterday afternoon from
Assistant Superintendent Mark Wilson, of the
West Penn. to the effect that that road was
open from Allegheny to Bolivar, and that two
parties of expert bridge builders will push on
east of Bolivar and rebuild the bridges as fast
aspossible.

for the sufferers.

and employes of the roads running into
Johnstown has been almost superhu
man. Superintendent Patton, of the
Baltimore and Ohio, has not left the wreck

the young ladies who wero passengers on the
day express. The latter is a cousin of Mr.
GrierVand they had. attended the wedding pf
his sister. He saw a man who gave his name
as Hamilton, and said he was in the same car
with the ladies when the conductor issued
orders for everyone to leave the car. Mr.
Hamilton, instead of running up the mountain,
climbed to the top of the coach and sat there
In safety while the flood went by. He saw the
two young ladies afloat before they had gone
40 feet, and were whirled down the stream.
Their bodies haven't yet been recovered, al
though a diligent search Is being made for

Kernville, opposite Johnstown, is greater than
was at first suspected. Yesterday 200 men were
sent over to clear away the debris, and to-day
KK) more were engaged. It is not known how
many bodies aretunderneath the ruins, and the
nnmber cannot even be estimated. The work
men while removing the debris this afternoon
found a wrecked stable, and in one of the
stalls was a horse. The animal was alive, and
when it was removed pranced around as frisky
as any horse that had had a quiet seven days'
rest in the stab! c The horse is a very valuable
one.

them. This afternoon they captured a barrel
of wine and were taking it to headquarters
when a gang of hoodlums interfered and tried
to take it from them. Detective Murphy and
other members of the corps drow their revol
vers and drove the crowd back. When they
had put the barrel In a place of safety they
found the driftwood that surrounded their
headquarters was on fire, and the rascals they
had driven away had returned and were setting
fire to it.
The entire force ran out and drove them
away, and it was with difficulty that the Are
was extinguished. Detective Murphy found a
man stealing clothing from the commissary
department and promptly arrested him. The
man resisted bnt was soon put in the custody of

any moment. It used to feed the old Genesee
canal, but is now used for a sportsman's para
dise. It has been condemned by public senti
ment and State Superintendent of Canals

whole Genesee valley, who have protested
against the maintenance of the reservoir, as it
is a menace to the people and as liable to
sweep them into chaos, the same as the Johns

This reservoir is one-third larger than Cone

beth Stinson, of Norristown, found at Lock
port. Pachas been brought here from New
Florence. At tho cemetery her sister, Mrs.
Cyrus Shick, of Reading, identified the body
by a mark on the right hand and a large truss
worn. Mrs. Snick's husband was also lo6tin
the flood and can't be found. They were all
passengers on the first section of train 8 on
that fatal day.
Sheriff Mack put a large force at work yes
terday along the river on the Indiana side
tearing away driftwood in search of bodies,
burning and burying other decaying matter.
A Man Crashed to Death.

Johkstowij, June 7. A fatal accident oc
curred on the Stony Creek road at Mlnersvllle,
opposite Cambria City, this afternoon. A
construction train was clearing and repairing
the tracks when several cars were overturned
and one of the brakemen, Harry Gennelsteik
er, aged 20 years, was crushed to death. His
body was taken to his home about a square
away from the scene of the accident.

"An act to increase the naval establishment,"
approved August 3, 1886, (24 Statutes at Large,
page 215.) sealed proposals are hereby Invited,
and will be received at this Department until
12 o'clock noon,on MONDAY, the eighth day of
July, 1889, at which time and place they will be
opened in tho presence of attending Didders,
for furnishing about four hundred and twenty
eight (428) tons (2,240 pounds) of steel protective-deck
plates, forty (40) pounds per square
foot, for use in the construction of said cruiser,
about two hundred and fourteen (214) tons of
such plates being for the upper layer ot elat
ing, and about two hundred and fourteen
(214) tons for tho lower layer there
of. Such plates to be delivered
at such place or places in tbe navy yard,
Brooklyn, N. Y., as the Commandant of that
yard may designate. Deliveries to commence
within thirty (30) days from the data of con
