?' mrtwf -d THE PITTSBURG- DISPATCH, TUESDAY, MAT1 28, 1889. 4 3f I BUILDING A BEAUTIFUL HOME. --h t rTine New Residence, of Mrs. on Fifth Avenue, East End. The plans hare just been completed for the new residence of Mrs. J. M". Gusky, which that lady is about to erect iu the East End. The location isQn Fifth avenue, between "Wilkins avenue and Roup street, adjoined on one side by the grounds and residence of the late John B. McCune, and on the other side by George Heed's house. The lot on which the building will be erected measures 150x250 feet, while the house itself will have dimensions oi 51x62 feet. Buff colored stone will be used as the material in the constrnction of the building, and the architecture will be partially ionic and gothic Broad marble WHO IS BEHIND IT? Report That Prominent Bankers Induced the Discharge of P. & W. Employes Some of the Unfortunates. The work of industrially decapitating employes of the Pittsburg and "Western Rail road goes steadily on. "Where it will end none of the f richtened subordinates can con jecture. That it hasn't ended yet is evident. Yesterday there were two men discharged in the new Superintendent's office. This leaves only two clerks in that office. There were four clerks out of eight discharged in the general freight office. There were two clerks in the office of General Passenger Agent Bassett, and one of these, the stenograpuer, was dropped from the rolls. In the Auditor's office a num ber of men were let go, and in the shops the force of carpenters was cnt cown from 62 to 20 men. The latter included bridge and trestle men. In the Treasurer's office there were two out of three clerks let go. "The employes of the road who are left are living in aread. waiting to see who will be the next. It was stated yesterday that General Manager McDonald had said that he would cut tho pay-roll down 50 per cent, to $10,000 per month. It was also reported yesterday, that DrexehMor ganACo., who own a great amount of the stock of the company, are interested in this decapita tion. A broker said the firm was doing it through Vice President Thomas, who, it is well known, is one of the great banking firm's agents. The Vice President Issued the orders to the General Manager, who in turn ordered the discharge of the men. The object, it was said, was to influence toe stock market and depreciate Pittsburg and Western. An official of another road, in speaking of the matter yesterday, said: "The Pittsburg and Western has always been run on a very economical plan, and this heavy discharge of employes may serious! affect the business of the company, everybody knows that at this season of the year railroad business is very heavy.jind necessitates the employment of a l-im number of men. Railroad men know the popcy of discharging constrnction men was in augurated on the Gould roads a few years aeo. and how disastrously it resulted to some of them." Extensive arrangements are being made for the banquet to be prcn the retiring Superin tendent, Mr. Johnston, at the Seventh Avenue Hotel Saturday evening. A DIOCESAN C0STEKTI0N. The Pittsburg Episcopalians to Hold nn Important Sleeting. There will be 54 delegates to represent Allegheny county at Oil City June 7 during the annual convention of the Protestant Epis copal Diocese of Pittsburg, which comprises most of Western Pennsylvania. Eighteen clergymen will attend from this county, including Bishop "Whitehead. The names of many prominent preachers are on the list, both in and out of the county. Much busi ness of importance to Pittsburg churches will be transacted in the course of the ordinary routine. Fine Whiskies. The house will contain about 20 rooms, and everything will be arranged according to the most modern improvements and com modities. As far as it is possible to estimate the cost of the residence it will be in the neighborhood of 550,000. Since the above drawing wa made Mrs. Gusky has decided to make a few changes in the building. The porch, which in the illus tration appears in the front view, is to be placed on one side, and some minor alterations are proposed. Jos. Stillburg, the architect, made the plans of the building. It is expected to have the structure completed in about a year from now. MAD AT THE GOVERNOR. His Excellency Arouses Indignation by Vetoing nn Appropriation. In veloine the Mercy Hospital's appro priation bill for $15,000 Governor Beaver excuses himself on the ground that it is a sectarian institution, and tnerefore not en titled to State aid. Tim O'Leary, Jr., one of the hospital's di rectors, said: Why, that reason would knock out all the in stitutions. Every man knows when a patient applies for admission there no questions are asked as to the creed, color or social standing. The poor man is on a level there with the rich man. It is the oldest and one of the very best hospitals In the city. Strange as it may seem to the Governor.only two of its physicians are Cath olics, and there never was a larger number. During the war those good women, who have given their lives loald unfortunate humanity, were not asked their creed; during the terrible times of the cholera and vellow fever it was not against them, bat when a little tl5, 000 is asked for at the bands or the State their sectarianism as nrged against them. Other friends of the institution are equally indignant. ON TO DETROIT. Botchers Leave Over tbo Lake Erie for Tbelr Annnnl Meeting. "The undersigned, believing that the Con stitution of Pennsylvania is and was in tended tp be an organization oi Government and a declaration of rights guaranteed to the individual citizen, and that under its provisions, all police regulations, and defini tions of criminal offenses were properlv left to the Legislature for enactment by statute law, which could be controlled by the peo ple of the Commonwealth, are opposed tothe adoption of the amendment to the Constitu tion, prohibiting the manufacture or sale of intoxicating liquor. "We believe that if snch a change iu law is expedient it should be made as all similar provisions of law have hitherto been made by statute enact ment. To attempt to put into the Constitu tion matters which should be left entirely to Legislative action, will tend to subject the Constitution to constant amendments, may lead to doubt and confusion in'its construc tion, nnd will tend to diminish the honor and reverence in which it is held by all men and all parties."
