Over 1,500 of Them to be Turned
Loose in Pittsburg Streets,
FROM ALL PARTS OP THE COUNTRY.
The National Gathering Here Xext Month
of a 'Worthy Order.
PARADE IN WHICH AKT WILL BE SHOWN
The third annual reunion of the Benevo
lent Protective Order of Elks of America
will be held in this city oa "Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday, June 19, 20 and 21.
Local Xodge if o. 11 is perfecting arrange
ments for the occasion, and expects to give
to Pittsburg the honor of making the meet
ing the largest and most successful one yet
held. Fully 1,500 members of the order,
representing all of the large cities, and some
of tbe most prominent actors have signified
their intention of attending, and the local
committee of arrangements expect the num
ber to be swelled to possibly twice that num
ber. The time set, being at a lull in the
theatrical season, will make it possible for
a large number to attend.
The programme has not been fully
mapped out yet, and will be more definitely
settled in a short time. However, this is a
general outline: The Grand Central Rink has
been engaged for the three days of the re
union. A reception will be tendered to the
visiting members at the rink "Wednesday
forenoon, the first day. and tho credentials
, given out. Thursday forenoon, or the second
day. a business session will be held. The topics
to be discussed have not been decided on.
Among them will probably be something in re
gard to the problem about admitting foreign
actors.
THE GREAT PARADE.
In the afternoon of the second daythe parade
will be given. It is expected to be a grand
affair, and the order expects to show as fine a
body of men as ever paraded in Pittsburg. An
elegant silk banner will be presented to the
lodge making the finest display. The local
lodge are "having 40 large transparencies, with
elks' head on them, painted br John Johnson,
scenic artist of the Academy of Music, and in
tend making a bold effort for the plum. They
will wear Prince Alberts, silk hats and white
gloves. The line of march will be short, but
Will take in the usual down-town route. In
the evening of the same day another business
session will be held.
About 1030 or 11 o'clock on Friday, the last
day. an excursion will be given on the May
flower to Davis Island Dam, McKeesport and
other points.
The reunion will end Friday evening with a
social session and banquet at the Grand Central
Rink. As many actors in all branches of the
profession will be present, some fun and witty
things may be expected, interspersed with the
more solid extempore speeches and solos
culled from the drama and opera.
In 1S78 Pittsburg Lodge was instituted as No.
11, the order having been founded in IMS, ten
years before. At the last report, in 1SS7, nine
vears later, there were 73 lodges and a membcr
' ship of between 8,000 and 9,000. At present
there are about 125 lodges, with the member
ship nearly doubled. Y hen the order was first
instituted its members were nearly all profes
sional actors, but of late years the membership
has extended to all professions, and among the
120 members of tbo lodge in Pittsburg nearly
every profession is represented.
ITS PROMINENT MEMBERS.
Among the number are three ball players,
Galvin, Miller and Carroll, and four prominent
newspaper editors of Pittsburg. There are
also an ex-Mayor, iron men, lawyers, etc In
fact, the order seems to have outgrown its
strictly professional feature and taken in all
who wished to subscribe to and enjoy its bene
fits. It is cenerally understood that the Elks en
joy themselves, but as a prominent member
said yesterday, "We are the same as any bene
ficent organization. The Elks are noted for
their gifts to charity, and while we enjoy our
self once in a while at a social session, people
would find ur regular sessions as sober as
those of any lodge. By the coming parade we
hoDe to show tbe citizens what a line bodv of
men constitute the order of Elks."
U1 of the officers of the Grand Lodge are ex
pected to be present at the reunion. Among
them are: Hamilton E. Leech; of "Washington,
D. C, No. 15. Grand Exalted Ruler; A. C.
Moreland, of New York, Grand Secretary;
Hugh'O'Neil, New York, Grand Secretary; W.
C Jones, St. Louis, E. L. G. K,: Percy Wilson,
Brooklyn. E. L. G. K.; Emile Eonrher. Louis
ville. E. L. G. K.: E. C. Chamberlain, New
York, Grand Tiller.
The Grand Lodge of the order will bold its
annual meeting in New York the second week
in next July. At this meeting the insurance
feature of the order will come under discus
sion and an endeavor made to bring it to more
perfection than at present.

RARE FLORAL BEAUTIES.
Member of the Botanical Society Receive
a Present Showing- Their Appreciation
A Unique Orchid.
The "Western Pennsylvania Botanical So
ciety held an unusually interesting meeting
last night, being very pleasantly entertained
by examining a collection of rare plants
which had been sent to Dr. Hamilton, Presi
dent of the society.
The plants were presented by Dr. A C.
Ziegler. of Allegheny, and they represented
some very fine species from the highest moun
tains of Colorado. Most of them were speci
mens of the arctic region, i. e., such plants as
are only found near the mountain tops where
ordinary vegetation eeases to exist.
Among these particularly well preserved
were the Troximon aurantiacium of the Gray
Peak mountain, which grows near the timber
lime and the Lalir arctica, which is generally
only found near the poles. There was also a
fine specimen of an arctic aster, a Rocacee and
various other representations of the family of
Carex.
Mr. W. M. Kennedy had brought a large
basket of wild flowers, which he had gathered
near Sewickley. including a rare specimen of
orchid, whose lower petal is clear yellow ex
ternally, dotted and striped with scarlet in
ternally, and blown up to the shape of a bal
loon. An Aphyllon Imiflorum was also gener
ally admired and commented upon.
Dr. Hamilton stated that a gentleman from
North Carolina had written the society a let
ter in which he offered a collection of 5,000
plants for 8200. It was decided not to buy the
collection, because thesociety prefers to accept
plants of its members own finding.
Several new members were enrolled last
night after the meeting was over.
I0DKG MOEFHT MIKES A PLBA
For the Amendment, and Gives Several Good
Reasons Why.
A good sized audience was addressed by
T. Edward Murphy last night at the Smith
field Street M. 33. Church, on the prohibi
tion amendment question. Mr. Murphy
mentioned other great reforms, and pointed
out the analogy between them and this one.
He said that all reforms, for a long time, were
advocated by a minority of the people. "This
goes to prove," he added, "that, because but a
minority of the neonle of Alleehenv countv
are for prohibition, it is no reason whyit should
be wrong." Referring to a man who had taken
a contrary view, he asked how he would have
liked to have been with the majority at the
time of the flood.
Continuing, Mr. Murphy spoke of the anti
Prohibitionists quoting scripture in support of
their position against prohibition. In this con
nection he repeated a remark made by a news
paper man, to the effect that the amendment
question had produced one good result: It had
caused every German saloon keeper to buy a
Bible. He also quoted a reply made by an
Irishman, to whom Paul's prescription to Tim
othy, to "take a little wine for his stomach's
sake," had been mentioned. The Irishman
answered:
"But I ain't Timothy, and there's nothing the
matter with my stomach."
Among the numerous other incidents related
by the speaker was one regarding a man who
had stated that he was going to vote against
the amendment. A day later the man an
nounced that be intended to vote for the
amendment. AVhen asked what had produced
lhe change, he said:
"When I went home last night my boy asked
me what 1 was going to do about the amend
ment. I replied that I intended to vote against
it. He said: 'Papa, I've never had a vote, and
you have had a number. I want you to vote
for me this time.' So, you see, I'm not going to
VQte myself this time; but Pm going to the polls
on June 18 and pntin my boy's vote."
The Doctors Have Come.

tors have permanently located at their resi
dence 315 Penn avenue, Pittsburg. All who

deformity, but will in no instance accept
