SOME -BOGUS SWEETS.
Unscrupulous Eastern Refiners Again
Tampering With Sugar.
J AFEIENDLT TIF TO THE PUBLIC.
"Why Some Sugars Turn Canned Goods Sour1
and Tazzle the Women.
PITTSBURG .HOUSES WARNED IN TIME
The ingenious brain of the enterprising
American is constantly figuring on some
new and undiscovered way of making a
dollar. Like Alexander, he yearns foe
more; hut, aside from the innumerable
legitimate business enterprises, the avaric
ious and unscrupulous ones will show their
hands, thereby throwing a cloak of degener
acy over the qld, honest methods of manu
facture. Especially true is this in the sugar busi
ness. Just now the season is about to open
for the large dealers and a private letter of
warning was received from one of tbe largest
Eastern wholesale houses to a leading local
firm.
THE RASCALS AT IT AGAIN.
Following Is the letter:
"We hare been Informed that tbe same parties
who sold "bogus mixed yellow sugars" last season
arc commencing to manufacture tbcm again.
Please be on tbe lookout for them, as they are a
fraud un the public.
The Dispatch's expose of the selfsame im
position last year, and the subsequent suits
brought against local dealers by the Boston
Hennery, of Boston, will be remembered by
dealers. At that time the bogus stuff, was
shipped and sold at a very appreciable profit
to tbe public which is the sufferer of course.
No sugar of this kind has yet arrived, and
perhaps the publication of this article wiU pre
vent the importation of a sugar which is prac
tically worthless, but like the brass ring fake,
it is very deceptive, so perfect is its ostensible
purity.
Happily there Is only one class of sugars in
which the fraud can be practiced, and that is
what is known as "yellow;" the granulated
coods cannot be tampered with, as the very
name implies purity.
The process by which tho adulteration is ac
complished is by a mixture of one-half grape
sugar and the same quantity of refined yellow.
The grape is of the lowest quality of saccha
rine substance, and is ground finely in order to
mix with the refined article.
WHritE THE rEOMT COMES IN.
The comparative cost of each is: grape, o
cents, while 6 is paid for refined. Dividing the
two prices by half, makes tbe price 4J cents,,
actual cost, while it is sold to local dealers and
the country trade for EH, a profit or rather
steal of 1 cent per pound. This amount is
doubled practically by tne inherent worthless
Bess of the article in using.
The grape sugar doubled up with the finer
article causes it to ferment when used, and for
this reason the crude stuff is used exclusively
in beer, which brings about fermentation.
From this inequality of the bogus stuff does
the housewife suffer in her "putting up' of
fruits. The sugar when added to the preserves
goes through the fermenting process, there
by spoiling tbe season's canned fruits and
provoking the women.
There is no doubt that many a country mer
chant becomes loaded up with this inferior
article, induced by its cheapness, it being some
lower but not suspiciously so than the
straight goods. The manufacturers of it have
houses in .New York and Philadelphia, and it
was from tbe latter city the information came
which will give all dealers and the public at
large a gratuitous "tip" not to touch, taste or
handle.

A Mistaken Impression About That Old Gar
rison Propertr.
t It was rumored yesterday that the old
J Custom House and recruiting station at the
' corner of Penn avenue and Garrison alley
was about to be sold. Tbe popular impression
seemed to be that the Congressional bill allow
ing this Government property to be sold had
been passed.
Congressman Dalzell was seen yesterday re
Earding'tbe matter and he said the bill did not

The New Standard Barrel Factory U Now
Being Rebuilt.
The Standard barrel factory -which was
burned down in the Eighteenth ward last
fall is now being rebuilt. However, It will only
be one-half the size it formerly was.
The company thinks that will be large enough
to make all barrels necessary in Pittsburg.
"Weak, ailing, worrying children, are of
ten afflicted with worms, the special symp
toms caused by the constant irritation of
these pests, being both distressing to the little
one and alarming to the parent. You can
rid your children of worms, and save them
much suffering by resorting to Dr. Jayne's
Tonic Vermifuge, which is a good tonic al
so, and builds up the strength of young and
old, acting with especial benefit in dyspep
sia, sour stomach, and want of appetite.
Buy the large size bottles when a tonic is
needed.

The Glass Manufacturers Meet To-Day
Mr. Chambers Talks Tank.
While speaking to the reporters at the
Union depot about the tank system, Mr.
James Chambers said last night:
"We are now making rapid preparations in
order to have the second tank ready for opera
tion when tbe fall season commences. We are
not afraid that we cannot eet men to work at
it, in spite of the scarcity of window glass men.
The workmen who work at the tank one day
soon find ont what is easiest and most pleasant
for them, and we have no fear that we cannot,
Eet all the men we want.
"Regarding this tronble about tbe imported
window class men. I do not take any notice of
it. The whole thine was nothing but a piece
Spite work, and it will not amount to much."
'Will tou be present at the meeting of the
glass manufacturers to-dayf"
"Yes, I suppose so. No, I don t know
whether the tank system will be discussed
there or not. I do not see why it should. The
question of of wages, the pnee of glass and
other general matters may be discussed, and
that Is all I can say about it"
THE BOI HAD FRIENDS.
An Exciting Time oo Gray's Road Over a
Jnvenlle Arrest.
There was a thrilling time on Gray's road,
Thirtieth ward, the other evening. A man
named Perry, who has become objectionable
to some of the men on a strike at Oliver &
Roberts' mill, was passing in a buggy when an
enfant terrible, 6 or 8 years old, began calling
"Scabl" Ferry caught the urchin, and a
woman, seeing the trouble, ran out and, pulling
off her apron, rolled a piece of limestone in it,
making a very effective slungshot,;with which
she proposed to do up Mr. Ferry.
A large crowd gathered in a twinkle, and for
a time it looked blue for Mr. Ferry, but at
length moderate counsel offered by some spec
tators calmed the turbulence.
The boy was frightened almost out of his
wits, and Ferry will scarce attempt to make
another similar arrest in that locality.
ELECTRICITY'S PROGRESS.
Jt Necessitates New Lawn nnd Now New
Charters Are Required.
The stockholders of the Allegheny County
Light Company and the Pittsburg Light
Company met yesterday in their offices, in
the Wcstinghouse building, to vote on a propo
sition to accept the provisions of the new act
of Assembly for the incorporation and regula
tion of corporations to supply light, heat and
power by electricity.
This action was explained as being taken for
this reason: The two companies were incor
porated under tbe act of 1871, which authorized
rnrnnanips to furnish Debt, heat and Dover, but
no provision was made for electric light, be'
cause electricity was not men in use. uui uio
amendment which passed May 9. makes pro
vision for electricity, and the companies will
have to return their charters to Harrlsburg to
be legalized under the new act.

Young Ladles Who Cnn Hnndlo Muskets ns
Well ns Regulars.
Drill Master Captain Brown has had 16
young ladies of the Butler Street M. E.
Sabbath School under his charge for the past
two weeks, putting them through the military
tactics, preparatory to a grand military and
musical entertainment to be given at the But
ler Street Cnurch on June 6.
The ladles have red caps, white blouses, blue
skirts and black boots. Those who have seen
them drill sar they already handle their muskets
surprisingly well and execute maneuvers that
would be a credit to Uncle Sam's own boys.
THE U. S. MAIL.
The Flay of George Jenks Will he Produced
Here In September.
Mr. Charles W. Fleming, the partner of
Mr. George Jenks, went East last night for
the purpose of making arrangements with
some of tbe best known American comedians
for the production of Mr. Jenks' play, "The
U. S. Mall."
The play is expected to be brought to Pitts
burg daring next September, but its first pro
duction will take place in the East.
A Politician Embarrassed.
The constables and special officers about the
city have been arresting qnlte a number of
drivers of vehicles lately because the owners
bad not paid their vehicle license. The carriage
of one of tbe most prominent politicians in the
city was stopped by a ward constable Tester
day. The costs in such cases amount to $2 25,
and the Alderman's fine is $10 in addition to tho
price of the license.
Probably Used to It.
The annual mud poultice is being applied to
country roads. It was too soft for comfort yes
terday, but was preferable to the chuckholes,
hub deep, which were worn during the exces
sively moist winter. It seems strange, but It is
a fact, that tbe people -most interested tbe
farmers are the slowest to perceive their
misery.
The Sonthslde Electric Light.
The Pittsburg Electric Light Company,
which is filling a part of the contract of the

putting up the lamps on the Southside. Carson
street will be illuminated at the end of this

THE
SECOBD LICENSE TBANSFER.
An Application Brings to Light tho Big
Percentage of Dentils Among Llaaor
Men 15 Out of 425 Last Year.
The second application for a transfer of
license since May 1 will"be heard to-day at
920. The first application was made April
25, when the license of tbe MonongahelaHouse
was asked to be transferred from Florence C
Miller to Win. Anderson and Frank Woog.
This was granted May 4. An application to be
heard to-day Is that of the Hotel White in
McKeesport, from S. Is. Carothers to W. J..
Dennv.
The law in regard to transfers Is very
strict, and practically amounts to the ask
ing for a new license. The place must have
been closed, and all business stopped for ten
days previous to the hearing, and some com
plaints, especially with large wholesale houses,
claim this to be a hardship, and in case of death
it is claimed tbe license should descend to tbe
heirs as any other uroperty.
A remarkable thing in regard to the licenses
last year, as shown by the books of Clerk Mc
Gunncgle, is that the percentage of deaths
among saloon keepers, as Judge Ewing re
marked, "is something wonderful." Last year
there were 34 applications for a transfer, and of
these only 29 snowed good reasons for the
change, and received permission. Of these 29.
15 were caused by the death of the owners, and
as there were but 425 licenses in all, the per
centage of deaths is unparalleled.
Efforts have been made to change this trans
fer clause In the Brooks law, but without avail,
and Judge White has cone on record as being
sternly opposed to it. The fact must be pub
lished ten days in advance, and asks that all
who are 'interested or wish to remonstrate,
must be present.
IT WAS FIREPfiOOF.
The First Blaze la the New Stono Court
Houso'Balldlng.
Yesterday shortly before 4 o'clock a vol
ume of smoke poured into the County Reg
ister's office through the ventilating registers.
A search was made and the fire discovered in
the basement underneath tho Register's office.
A huge box, fully 15 feet square and packed
with waste paper and sweepings, was in a blaze.
A line of hose was gotten out and attached
to a plug. The plug, however, wouldn't work,
and another one was bunted up. This time the
nozzle end of tbe hose was found to be at the
ping, and after vainly trying to attach it, over
a hundred feet of hose had to be reversed. All
this time tbe fire was blazing away, and making
a thorough" test of the fireproof qualities of the
building. The stone walls and iron celling pre
vented any damage being done, and when water
was at last secured the fire was extinguished in
a couple of minutes.

FOR BALE THOUGHTFUL PERSONS IN
buying a home will take into account tbe sur
roundings and probabilities of enhancement oi
value; convenience to good Improvements Is a
leading consideration: also rapid transit to and
from the business part oi the city; tbe quality ot
the houses In the neighborhood goes for a good
deal: as to build or buy a handsome stone or brick
residence and have inferior houses go up after
ward on adjoining lots detracts from tbe value of
tbe first; to buy on a neatly paved street, with
sewers, gas and water already laid, is lmnortant;
one then knows wharthe whole cost is, and has
not to worry about the cost of future grading and
paving. All these items and many more are cov
ered at the handsome new dwellings on Oakland
Square (formerly Linden Grove), which need only
be seen to be appreciated. The price Is S6, 500 and
and S3, 750, payable on easy terms, for elegant,
thoroughly well built and commodious bouses,
standing apart, on lots 30x100. and fitted with all
tbe modern conveniences. All the bouses front
on asphaltum streets, and upon a handsome park
Filanted with shade trees; old forest trees plentl
ully shade the neighborhood. The cable cars are
now but six minutes' distant, and will be brought
still nearer. These houses are rapidly selling, be
