The Marvelous Speed "With Which
, ; They Dart Along the Streets.
Jk A.PDBLIC TEST MADE YESTERDAY.
; Hospital. Ambulances in Pittsburg Can
Outrun Fire Engines.
SOMETIMES IT ISAEACE WITH DEATH
' "There comes the yellow flag; loot outl"
Every day the cry rings out on some of
the prominent avenues as a hospital ambu
lance flies through the streets to the fre
quent scenes of accident? or to answer a
depot call. The Dispatch had frequently
heard marvelous stories of the fast time
made by these chariots of mercy and of their
efficiency above that of other cities.
Yesterday afternoon a. reporter was de
tailed to ascertain the fastest time ever made
by the ambulances of different institutions.
Superintendent "W. A. Cowen, of the
"West Penn Hospital, when the object of the
visit was stated, showed in a moment that
he had been approached on a pet theme.
Come out to the stables and see the mules,"
said he. The drrrer was just leaving the
stables. .
"Hitch up tho ambulance," called out Mr.
Cowen. Then to the writer he said:
'Jump in, we'll take a ride." And before the
reporter realized exactly what was going on
the driver was beside them.
A THRILLIKa BIDE.
The superintendent simply wore his slippers
and dressing jacket, but that did not matter.
-The reporter jerked out his watch, as did the
superintendent. As the gong struck the mules
bounded from the barn door as though shot
out of a cannon. The watch showed two min
utes of S. It was the busiest part of the day
and Liberty street and Penn avenue were
crowded with iron trucks and other heavy
teaming wagons.
"Let's go to the Union depot," said the su
perintendent as the mules flc across the over
head bridge.
Down Libert? street rushed the mules, their
ears laying back and going in a way that would
shame a good many fire horses. Ihe reporter
operated the gong, and every time it struck it
might have been on the mules' backs from the
effects gained.
Children ran out expecting to see a fire en
gine, rnd women with soapsuds on their arms
stood still with amazement. Soon a long string
of wagons was encountered, and fully one-half
a minute was wasted getting around them and
gliding from one car track to the other. Some
of the wagons stopped their teams and gazed
on with something like wonder at the mules as
they sped past. There a was whirr, a short, sud
den stop, and the wagon came to a standstill at
the Union depot.
IX TWELVE MINUTES.
It lacked a minute and a quarter to 3 o'clock
and the trip had been made in just 5J minutes
fully two miles on a crowded street.
The gong rang again and the wagon swung
around the comer to Penn avenue and started
on the return trip. A f nneral was all broken
up as the wagon sped past. Eight or ten
wagons were made to turn out and as the
mules rushed past a cable car going
the same direction, the reporter clutched the
seat and tried to catch his breath and mut
tered something to the effect that they were
going. Three other cars were passed the am
bulance spanned the bridge at Twenty-eighth
street,&nd the mules drew up at the hospital
doo. The two watches had not left the hands
of the Superintendent and the reporter, and as
J the mules once more raised their ears at the
I hospital, the hands showed 3:05, the round trip
I being made in just 12 minutes.
L As the ambulance sped along, the reporter
f noticed the driver glance back into the ambu
lance, as II to see If he was jolting the patient
OTHER REMARKABLE TRIM.
As the mules were unhlt;"ed and turned into
box stalls, tbey rolled over and were apparently
ready for another trip. Their names were
Josey and Billy. They it ere an experiment
and were brought untrained from Kentucky a
little over a year ago to replace the horses.
They were trained to the work and, the Super
intendent says, never balked. The excitement
has the same effect on them as on fire horses,
, and they never have to be struck with the lash.
The Sul-rincndent thinks mules should be
tried irrffeHre eorvJeA.and s&yrf that they far
pSrpiss horses; as they Will'never founder and
Fn stand the paved streets better. They must
TO pure Kentucky-bred mules though no com
mon trash.
The mules have often made fast time be
tween the Union depot and the hospital, but
yesterday's trip was the fastest. It is a common
thing for them to be hitched up and make the
round trip in 20 minutes including the time of
hitching. One of the doctors present stated
that they had made the trip to the Lake Erie
and Western depots, about three miles, in six
minutes. Of the trip yesterday three persons
can testify to the time made, though marvelous
as it may seem.
HOMEOPATHIC SPEED TOO.
The fastest trip made by the Homeopathic
Hospital ambulance was last New Year's Eve,
when seven cases were brought into the Union
depot badly burned by an accident at the
Prick Coke "Works at Scottdale. The trip
from the Union depot was made In less than five
minutes, and in just one hour the patients were
all In bed and their wounds an dressed.
Other quick trips have also been made. The
driver mentioned one time last September
when he was bringing a woman from Ben
Venue wbo had shot herself. The driver en
deavored to reach the hospital before she died,
and was baffled by the bad condition of Fifth
avenue. The woman drew her last breath as
she reached the hospital steps.
The horses and harness used on the Homco-
Sathic ambulance were donated by Mrs. Will
itn Thaw. The horses are a magnificent pair
of bays of the French coacher breed. The
ambulance was the gift of Mrs. Robert Pit
cairn, and the stables were bought by the
Ladies' Association.
THE POLICE SPEEDEES.
The police patrol wagon often acts as an
ambulance, and makes fast time. The patrol
wagon assisted the Homeopathic ambulance in
transferring the seven cases rioted above. At
one. time they went to Twenty-third street in 13
minutes in answer to the Monroe foundry ex
plosion. Before the hospitals had adopted ambnlances,
Ben Matthews, a liveryman living on Butler,
near Forty-first street. keDt an ambulance and
answered hospital calls. At one time he went
to the 13. 0. depot in 15 minutes on crowded
streets.
It is expected soon that the hospitals will also
adopt the mode of harnessing used by the
patrol and fire service, when still better time
can be made. Ambulances were given the
right of way on public thoroughfares four years
ago by Councils and since that time their effi
ciency has stcadilyincreased. As Superintend
ent Co wen said:
"We now stand ahead of all other cities for
fast time and efficient ambulance service."

AT WORK AT EAST.
The Pumping of tbe Yellow Pond Merrily
Going on A Means of Lowering tho
Threatening Water.
Residents of the Thirteenth ward in the
vicinity of Yellow pond retired last night
upon conch.es of contentment according to
the latest returns. After a tedious interim
since the memorable local deluge of a week or
so ago, the balky pumps started off at a great
rate yesterday evening, and, if Jupiter Pluvius
doesn't turn his sprinkling-pot on again, tho
impending danger of inundated homes on Soho
street and Center avenue is at an end.
The efforts of a big force of men, with two
old hydraulic pumps, were futile yesterday to
decrease the depth ot the fast-filliuc frog
pond, and another one was engaged, which was
at work in no time.
Thomas Carlln & Sons, of Allegheny, were
engaged by the Department of Public Safety,
and in 25 minntes after their new piston pump
was put at work a general decrease of tyi inches
of water had been forced over the hill, down in
a turbulent stream to the Soho pond on FiQh
avenue, whence it is carried on to the river.
Some of the people on that side were fearful
lest a repetition of the Yellow pond trouble
would occur, but, upon examination, the
"drop" was found open and free from all rub
bish or barrier. The water is ten feet from
there, and is fast flowing through other small
holes belowNthe drop, thus precluding any
danger.
At this time the sewage is steadily flowing
down from Center avenne and Mmersville, as
far out as Thirty-third street; but the pump
now on hand is equal to the occasion. An
eight inch pipe is being used and to-day another
pump is to be put In operation, .which will ac
celerate the work very materially. Tho firm
now doing the work is the same which was
called on to help the city's engines in raising
the ruins of tbe Wllley building.
At tbe rate the depth is decreasing, by to
morrow night the water will practically be
down to its proper level, should it not rain in
the interval.

FOR SALE THOUGHTFUL PERSONS IN
buying a home will take Into account tbe sur
roundings and probabilities of enhancement oi
value; convenience to good improvements is a
leadlnar consideration: also ranld transit to and
from tbe business part or the city; the quality ot
the houses in the uelghborhood goes for a good
deal: as to build or buy a handsome stone or brick
residence and have Inferior houses go up after
ward on adjoining lots detracts from the value of
the first; to buv on a neatly payed street, with
sewers, gas and water already laid. Is important;
one then knows what the whole cost is, and has
not to worry about the cost of future grading and
paving. All these items and many more are cov
ered at the handsome new dwellings on Oakland
Square (formerly Linden Grove), which need only
be seen to be appreciated. The price Is (8,500 and
and 88,750. payable on easy terms, for elegant,
thoroughly well built and commodious houses,
standing apart, on lots 30x100, and fitted with all
the modern conveniences. All the houses front
on asphaltum streets, and upon a handsome park
planted with shade trees; old forest trees plenti
fully shade the neighborhood. The cable cars are
now but six minutes' distant, and will be brought
still nearer. These houses are rapidly selling, be
