m ASSEMBLY OF KNIGHTS
Is" Now Their Aim, and They Choose
a Labor Journal as Organ.
HOW DEALERS DISAPPOINT THEM
J3j First Kefusin? to Pay the Bates They
, Sow Agree to Give,
THE PRESIDENT AKD SECEETAET TALK
A number of the members of the Milk
Producers' Union are greatly in favor of
making their organization an assembly of
the Knights of Labor, and a motion to that
effect trill be made, probably, at the next
general meeting of the Union. The first
step in that direction was taken yesterday
afternoon, when Mr. Jones made the mo
tion to have the Trades Journal adopted as
the official paper of the organization.
The reason of this proceeding on the part
of the milk shippers was explained by one
oi them to a reporter of this paper in this
Manner:
The public," he said, "has an idea that
our organization is run to uphold a monop
oly, and we want to show the people that
such is not at all our intention. The fact
ol the matter is that the dealers were having
a monopoly of the milk market, as they
made the price of our product. 'When we
objected to such treatment they simply
laughed at us. We had no remedy but to
organize our union, not to control the milk
market and put the price on tbe consumer, but
simply to protect ourselves from being imposed
upon. All we ask is to get a fair price for our
product.
SO MONOPOLY IXTE2TDED.
When we made the arrangement with Mr.
Heed, of the Chartiers Company, to be our
agent, we never intended to Rive him the con
trol of a monopoly either; we did that because
the milk dealers scorned our first demands, and
we also wanted to lower the cost of the dis
tribution of milk, a move which would un
doubtedly be of advantage to the public, be
cause they would get the benefit of it.
"Our endeavor to associate ourselves with
the Knights of Labor, the working people, is a
proof that we are tbe people's friends, and will
wore in their interests."
At the meeting yesterday afternoon of the
Executive Committee of the Union, the situa
tion was generally discussed. Mr. Reed was
requested to make a statement of his work
during last week, and be said that he bad done
pretty well, and lelt confident that he conld
find a market for all the milk shipped to him.
Last Saturday, be said, he sold 6,000 gallons of
milk, and when tbe shippers intimated that he
would soon have to dispose of 15.000 gallons
per day, be said he could do it. because be had
his wagons and agents still on tbe streets,
drumming up the retail trade.
The committee seemed to be satisfied with
that, and the dealers' actions came under dis
cussion. It was resolved that tbe shippers
meet on next Fnday morning at 11 o'clock and
await an invitation from tbe Dealers' Union to
be present at their meeting at 1 o'clock.
Dr. Irvine, tbe President, when asked what
he thought abont the price proposed by the
dealers (11 cents and IS cents per gallon), said:
opejt to conviction' cheap.
"If they had made us an offer like that when
we asked them to negotiate with us, this milk
war would never bave taken place."
"What will yon do at tbe meeting If they
make such a proposition to your'
"I do not know yet. I will bave to wait until
the meeting takes place and until the point has
been discussed. I believe, though, that we will
be able to mate a compromise with the dealers
and get to an understanding. Of course this is
a triangular fight. Mr. Reed is iu it, you know,
and he has to be taken care of somehow. How
it will be settled. however, is hard to tell atthis
time, because we do not yet know what tbe
dealers propose to do."
Mr. Stewart, Secretary of the Union, com
plained that a number of shippers had seceded
from tbe union during tbe last week. Several
of them had sent him their resignations, and
he wanted to know what to do about them.
Major A. M. Brown, the attorney of the union,
requested that the names be furnished him in
order that he might ask them to pay up. He
claims that the law makes them liable for the
23 they put down when they entered the
union.
Before tbe meeting closed a resolution was
passed instructing Mr. Reed to offer milk at 12
cents per gallon to anyone who wants it, either
dealer, retailer or consumer.
HE HAD K0 HAND IN IT.
SherlfTDIcCandless Soya the Finks Are Only
Watchmen.
A committee from the Trades' Council
Tisted Sheriff McCandless yesterday in re
gard to the Pinkerton detectives now sta
tioned around the Allegheny Bessemer Steel
Company's works at Duqnesne. They asked
him If he had been appealed to by the owners
of the works to protect their property and by
what right the "Pinks" were there. The
Sheriff replied that he had received no word,
one way or the other, from the Arm; be bad
issued no proclamation warning the strikers to
keep the peace, and the detectives were put
there without any notice to him.
The committee were civen to understand that
the men had no authority as detectives, but
were there only In tbe capacity of watchmen.
The members of the committee say the object
of tbe firm is to overawe tbe strikers and com-
?el them to return to work at tbe wages of
ered. Judge Ewing yesterday granted a prelimin
ary injunction against the strikers of tbe Alle
gheny Bessemer Steel Company in tbe equity
proceedings instituted by the company to keep
tbe strikers from congregating about the
works. The case was not argued, the defend
ants not appearing or having any counsel.

The Slillvale Iron Works Has Not Shut
Down Acntn.
It was rumored yesterday that the Mill
Tale Iron Mills had again been shut down,
''after only two weeks operation by the syn
dicate which bought the property from Graff,
Bennett fc Co., and that it would remain closed
f rfr some time.
jgMr. J. W. Friend, a member of the syndicate,
was visited by a reporter of The Dispatch
last night and asked about the truth of the re
port. He denied it emphatically; said tbe mill
v as running as usual yesterday; it will run to
day, and will .continue in operation in the fu

A SILVERWARE EXHIBITION.
The Beautiful Display Now Being Made by
W. W. Wattles.
W. W. "Wattles, the well known jeweler,
at No. 30 Fifth avenue, has introduced an
entirely new noveltv in the jewelry busi
ness in this city. He has fitted up the sec
ond storv of his place of business with a
special display of silverware that has never
been equaled in Pittsburg or Allegheny.
Crowds of people visited the exhibition yes
terday, and the ladies were lavish in their
praise of the many novelties set before them.
The room is a perfect bower of silverware.
Tastefully arranged on the shelves, tables,
brackets, pedestals and every imaginable
kind of a projection.the heavy chased silver
stands to delight the beholder. In
the center of the room stands a large dinner
table, with the silver set upon it. Almost
everything, with the exception of the plates
and glasses, is silver. In the center of the
table is a large silver soup or oyster tureen
which alone cost almost $400. There is also
ajnumber of heavily chased double dishes.
The wine or champagne pitcher is in beau
tiful contrast with the delicately tintedim
ported glasses. Near the dinner table is a
tea table, with dainty little cups and sau
cers, out of which it would be a double
pleasure to drink the refreshing beverage.
Alongside the tea table isa gentleman's writ
ing desk.
The ladies who visited the exhibition yes
terday were enraptured by the ladies' dress
ing table with its silver articles, ornaments,
etc. In the room are shelves of punch
bowls, water bowls, tea sets and everything
in the line of sterling silverware. It is no
common display, to be seen upon an extra
occasion, hut it is an exhibition the aggre
gate cost of which would reach in the hun
dred thousands. Tbe credit for the display
is due to Mr. J. Harvey Wattles.
