ft l r i- & W-is A GKEAT TEMPTATION Extended Toward the Most Cele- brated of the World's Burglars, AN EXHIBIT OP FAMOUS JEWELS. A Peace Congress to le Held Whil Annies are Being Strengthened. PARIS ESTHDBIASTS MUCH EXCITED. Kewfeandliai Fishenntn Dcmuid Protection lot Hull Cillinc The great loan exhibition rhich opens in Vienna to-morrow contains such a vat amount of treasure that it appears a terri ble temptation to the world's burglars to test their powers. English newspapers are bored with complaints from indignant Kew ionndlanders, who demand that their fish ing rights be protected. Parisians are daily becoming more cxciVirt over -their coming Exposition. CST C1BLX TO THE DISPATCH. London, April 20. Copyrighted. To a burglar with ambition and nerve, Vienna just now presents a unique opportunity. A Loan Exhibition of specimens of the gold smith's art will open on Monday, in the palace of Prince Schwarzenberg, and people who have seen the superb collection cannot find adjectives expressive enough to convey an adequate idea of the show. Five large rooms are piled up with such things as em erald and diamond diadems, necklaces, coronets, tables of solid silver, bis chain set in silver, huge mirrors framed in silver, toilet services of solid gold, and golden tankards and cups by the hundred. There is a necklace belonging to the Princess Metternich, in which are the biggest emeralds in the world, and the Princess Beuss shows a necklace made up of the largest opals known, some of them as big as peaches. The Duke of Nassau ex hibits a small case, for the contents of which he has just refused a quarter of a million dollars. The case contains two golden tankards, surmounted with Roman heads in relief, and having miniature portraits of the German Emperors encircled by big diamonds inside the lids of both tankards. Among other trifles maybe seen the grtjt Napoleon's golden traveling dressing case, and some queer looking golden instruments with which he used to pick and clean his im perial teeth. All these things and many more will Jbe on view until the 15th of June, and until the exhibition is over the chiefs of the Vienna police will know no peace. Every precaution will be taken, but the temptation to the world's burglarious talent is prodig ious. Scotland Yard has obligingly for warded to Vienna the portraits of all the clever and daring burglars known to them, and Americans will be interested to learn that Billy Porter figures in the list. It is probable that Inspector Byrnes will be asked to forward his interesting collection of photos. SLIGHTLY SATIRICAL. The French Government has shown its confidence in the future by officially sanctioning the Congress, and has actually appointed an Organizing Committee of very distinguished men and women. The pro gramme includes international arbitration, neutralization of rivers, canals, channels, straits, territories and nations, and the Congress will especially consider the most practicableameans oi gradually substituting the rule of law for that of force. On the 23th and 30th of Junp there will be a Par liamentary Congress, invitations to which have been or will be forwarded to represent atives of the parliamentary bodies ofall na tions, at which also a comprehensive pro gramme will be gone through. The British delegates ought to go to Paris in sackcloth and ashes, for oy the time they start Parliament will have voted 22,000,000 for the unpeaceful purpose of strengthening the army and navy. Prince Bismarck and his imperial master, who do not think much of peace congresses, have expressed great admiration at Lord Salisbury's bold ex penditure, and are looking around for new sources of revenue, from whence may be ob tained a few millions to spend upon the German navy. BEACHING FETER HEAT.- Paris Becoming: Dally More Excited Over Her Comlnc Show. tBT CABLE TO THE DISPATCH. London, April 20. Paris is gradually but surely reaching fever heat over its ex hibition. May 6 is to be made Historical by orations, fireworks and music, and the French capital will be ablaze till well along in the following day. The city is crowded with Americans. The hotels have raised their rates from 30 to 200 per cent, shop keepers have doubled theirprices, and there is a general apparent and enthusiastic move ment to acquire all the foreign money that drifts into Paris. Amid all this Interest about the exhibi tion, the, Boulanger trial is forgotten. It lacks the sensational element, without which Paris is bored. It drags along behind closed doors, and sullen surmises are all that it gives rise to. Meanwhile the General has a big honse in Brussels, six servants, eight horses, including the famous black charger and a semi-royal court. Bochefort and Dillon are also settled there. The news from the Belgian Capital is still most eagerly read in Paris. A private letter from a Soman Catholio priest of eminence in France tells me that Dillon is most assiduous in his approaches to the clergy, and that Boulanger has prom ised the church a return to power in the state in the event ot his success. Un doubtedly there is strong support among the clergy now, but how much pecuniary assist ance comes from this source it is impossible to say. Dillon's usefulness is very great. As a collector of funds he is practically without a rival in Europe. WILLING TO SITED BLOOD. Indignant Kewfonndlanders Demand That Tbrir Rights be Upheld. rar CABLE TO THE DISPATCH. London, April '20. Betired military officers and indignant Newfoundlanders are writing to the newspapers here, demanding the Imperial Government to prevent Frenchmen interfering with the fishing right of colonists. They threaten, if neces sary, to take the law into their own hands, and express an intention to shed their blood in the maintenance of their rights. The question is almost hoary with age, but the majority of English newspapers, to judge from their funny editorials, have just heard of it for the first time. The. queerest thing about the business is the revival of these ancient heartburnings at a moment when the French and English peace people are arranging their congresses and vowing eternal friendship and the brotherhood of man. A much more practical conference will be 101 SIBES ? ': THE , held in London on the 8th of May, when leading British merchants will meet at the invitation of Viscount Cross, Secretary of State for India, to discuss the best .means of improving the quality of Indian wheat. India at 'present comes after Russia and America as the third important source of England's wheat supply, and Viscount Cross and a good many other patriots think there is no reason whv she should not drive other nations out of the English market. Indian growers would like a protective bounty, but theyron't get it. The Saloa to be Better Than TTsaaU tBT CABLE TO THE DISPATCH. London, April 20. To make it intelligently they must have something to go by. That "something to go by" is advertising. . ' We furnish it day by day, when we tell you of the things to be had, their value, their merit or demerit. For what is advertising our advertising but the drift of what is going on each' day in the store? By means of this daily store news we are able to consult together, think together, act together. It readily follows, then, that the first element of it must be truth. This wanting, it is a Samson, shorn of its strength. "I know for certain it's true," observed the traditional old woman, "because I read it in a newspaper. The good old dame would, we fancy, have been rather puzzled if she had happened to read the lucubrations of some of the Pittsburg'advertisers. Strict truth is sacrificed to what is regarded as allowable advertising exaggeration. The temptation always is to value goods above their-real worth, to see merit to the hiding qf demerit Right here, then,, let it be said, while the dividing' which marks the difference between exaggeration and fact is to many advertisers like the ecfuator imaginary it is not so to us. We have always drawn the line strictly in this respect And why shouldn't we? We can very well afford to tell the truth about our goods and prices. The more the people know about them, the better it is for us. This explains why we never resort to tricks or exaggeration in order to get your patronage.
