I. AIODELGKANDJURY In Only Five Weeks It Disposes of Just 542 Cases and Quits. " IEWIFS DOUBLE HUEDERTEOUBLE Major Slagle's Case Ignored and a Num ber of Other NotaMe Ones. THAT WIDE OHIO CONNECTING BRIDGE The grand jury adjourned yesterday, after having been in session fire weeks. Five hundred and forty-two bills were disposed of, true bills having been returned in 331 cases. When the jurors made their pre- Eentment in court Judge Magee made a short speech complimenting them on their work, which, he said, had been1 very well done. Assistant District Atttorney Hay- maker also complimented the jurors, stating that this jury had disposed of more cases than any preceding grand jury for a long time. The foreman, Graham Scott, was presented with a handsome gold-headed ebony cane, and the clerk, Charles Erb, with a gold pen and holder. The presentations were made by ex-Senator Lee, of Hnlton, a member of the jury. Among the true bills returned yesterday was one against James Irwin for murder. Irwin was inspector of a gas line and ordered the gas turned on in the main at Harrison City. Concussion, bat no explosion, followed, and two men who were at work in the ditch were killed. One of them, William Rogan, died In this city, and Irwin was held for his death. He is also charged with murder in Westmoreland county, where the other man died. A true bill was returned against Joon Saners for arson. Saners lives at Beck's Bun, and one day, it is alleged, Bet his own house on fire. He afterward turned in and helped extinguish the fire. He had formerly been in Diimont, and his attorney, Mark Schmidt, will take steps to have him acquitted on the ground of insanity and recommitted to Dlxmont. The other true bills were Dude Clare, John Sullivan, Edward Kilraln, Robert Richardson, Edgar Campbell, entering a building with in tern to commit a felonv; William Faust, Ed ward Henlev, Ludwig Zehfus, Richard Kest ner.Albert Price, George Smith, Joseph Walza. alias Joseph Zelny, larceny and receiving stolen goods; Mary Edwards, larceny from the person; Michael Dula, pointing and discharging, firearms; Martin Dugan, Mary Maloy, aggra vated assault and battery; James Fallon, A. Marriott, William Powers, assault and battery; Wilhelmma Fiedler and Jennie Hazen, keep ing disorderly houses. The bill against Major John a Slagle, of Al legheny, for assault and battery on Elmer Bryan, was ignored. The Dispatch ignored this vindictive prosecution originally. Infor mation grew oat of the fact that Major Slagle, who is an elder in the Arch Street Presbyterian Church, compelled Bryan to stop distributing tracts in front of the church last Sunday, Slagle, it is stated, having, pushed Bryan into the gutter. Bryan, who was fined So and costs for disorderly conduct in connection with the affair, yesterday appealed to court from Mayor Pearson's decision. Upon the petition pre sented by W. D. Moore, Bryan's attorney. Judge Magee fixed 11 o'clock this morning for a hearing. The bill against Mrs. Annie Simon for big amy was also ignored. Mrs.Slmon.it was al leged, was married to V. Simon while her first husband, from whom she has never been di vorced, is still living. Her attorney took the ground that as the second marriage was per formed in Philadelphia and was innocently done, this county had no jurisdiction over the case, and the bill was ignored. The following bills were also ignored: Michae: Kelly, Charles Dolan, J. O'Brien, unlawful as sembly; Thomas Rowland, conspiracy; George Brolks, assault; Michael Keenan, keeping a dis orderly house. HOW MUCH OF A GOBBLE f That Is the Qneitlon of Law Arcaed Touch lag ifae Width or a Bridge. An argument was had before Judge Slagle yesterday afternoon in the equity proceedings of McFadden against the Ohio Connecting Railway Company. The argument was on the request for a preliminary injunction to restrain the railway company from taking possession of a strip more than 60 feet wide of the plain tiff's property on Brunot's Island. The railroad is to be built to connect the Panhandle Rail road with the Ft. Wayne Railroad. It is in tended to cross the Ohio river and connect with the latter road at Woods' Run. The bridge will cross over Brunot's Island, and tbe company took a right of way on the island 100 feet in width. J. S. Ferguson, Esq, appeared for the plaintiff and Attorney Gordon for the railway company. Mr. Ferguson held that, under the act of Assembly, a railroad can only take a right of way 60 feet in width, unless extra ground is needed for a station, or yard, nr un less tbe line is along a bluff or ravine. This is not the case on the island, and he asked that tbe company be enjoined from taking more than 60 leet. Mr. Gordon stated that the company would cross the island on a trestle, or a continuation of the Drldge, and 100 feet was necessary for building tbe bridge. He maintained that thev had a perfect right to take possession of 100 feet; but. if tbe Jndge decided differently, could at least enter upon that ground to build the bridge. Jndge Slagle took the papers and reserved bis decision. To-Day's Trial 1.1st. Criminal Court Commonwealth vs Ida Plume, James Craig, Joseph Blish, Charles Jones, W.H-Pf elf erT Sifting From Justice. Healing Without Medicine. The public healing of the sick bytheDrs. Smith during the past four weeks has created universal interest, and Is being recognized by the best class of citizens in a substantial manner, Mr. E. D. Wilt Lessee and Manager of the Grand Opera House, recognizing the great good the Drs. Smith are doing, klndlytendered them the use of the Grand Opera House for tbe benefit of tbe sick poor. The Drs. Smith will therefore change from Imperial Hall to the. Grand Opera House next MONDAY MORNING. APRIL 8. The Drs. Smith .will publicly heal the sick in tbe Grand Opera House every morning from 10 to 11 o'clock, free of charge, for two or three weeks. The most wonderful exhibition of healing the sick by the laying on of bands ever wit nessed in the city of Pittsburg is being done by the Drs. Smith. The strange and mysterious power these men Sossess Is not easily explained. Hundreds of lvalids, suffering from all manner of disease, may be seen at the hall every morning, seeking the powerfol aid and mighty touch of Drs. Smith. Tofcors, swollen joints, contracted joints, sciatica, rheumatism and pain of every description disappear as If by magic by tbe touch of their hands. A man who had lost an arm from a pistol shot, and who suffered from paralysis of the right side in consequence, hob bled upon the stage a few mornings ago. He was deaf In one ear and bis speech was so affected from a paralyzed condition of the vocal cords that it was difficult to unde-stand what he had to say. He had also partially lost the sight of one of his eyes. The doctors passed their hands over him for a few moments and then ordered him to arise and walk. To the great astonishment of all present he arose from his chair and ran around the stage, shout ing: "I am cured; they have cured me; I can hear and see, thank GodI" Tho doctor treated an old lady who had suf fered from spinal irritation and nervous ex haustion, who stated she bad not been able for nine years to sit in an ordinary chair or walk without assistance. After the doctor passed his hand a few times over her spine and the region of her heart, she exclaimed with aston ishment: "It is the work of the Lord! I am surely cured!" and she walked about the stage blessing the doctor and talking about her won derful restoration to health, and tbe audience joined her in demonstrative cheers. Remember that next Monday morning the doctors will change from Imperial Hall to the Grand Opera House on Fifth avenue, where they will pub licly heal the sick from 10 to U o'clock, free of charge, for the next two weeks. They invite everybody to go to the Grand Opera House and listen to their lectures and witness the cures they perform simply by the laying on of hands. Many diseases of months and even years standing are cured in a short time, while others may require treatment for weeks. The doc tors give no medicine except in constitutional diseases, which, in connection with their pecu liar magnetic operation, accelerate a perfect and radical cure. There is great credit doe Drs. Smith for the handsome manner In which they speak of other physicians. They do not claim to know everything or cure everybody, for tbereare many diseases beyond the reach of human aid. The Dr. is located at 602 Penn avenne, where those who are able to pay may go from 9 A. M to 7 P. If. Consultation is free, and admission to the Grand Opera Honse is also free. Everybody should go to the Opera House and judge for themselves. Letters of inquiry must contain two stamps. ap4-77 OFFICIAL FITTSBUKCt PrrrSBtntG, Pa., March 29. 1889.
