Evidently Pittsburg's chosen exponents
of the national game have not struck their
gait yet They -were very badly beaten
yesterday at Cincinnati. Their playing
was bad, and Morris and Staley were bat
tered right and left. The contest was one

themselves. In the last inning Pittsburg went
to pieces, and the score, which was one-sided at
best, jumped into double figures before the
slaughter ended.
Nicol's running muff of Carpenter's foul fly

landed on the next ball for a double, sending
inReilly. Tebeau's triple was worth just one

and he made a drive for the plate and made it
on a short passed ball. Reilly's failure to put
the ball on Smith after he had been caught
asleep enabled the Leaguers to get in their
second run, and in this they were aided with
Keenan's wild throw. With two out in the
third, Ned Morris, who was pretty wild, sent
Carpenter to base on balls. ThenTebeau lost
the ball in left field for three bags. Beard's
hit, which followed, was worth another run.

In the sixth there was a change of batteries,
and Staley and Mullane took their places in
the box. "Kid" Baldwin signalized his appear
ance by hammering the ball to center for three
bases, and he came home on a passed ball. In
all these innings Allegheny had done nothing,
and the few men who reached first were either
left, forced out or doubled up. They made but
one hit off Mullane, Al Bauer, the Interna
tional appointee, gave satisfaction as umpire.

St. Louis, April a Tommy McCarthy was
the last of the Browns to report, and he put in
an appearance at Sportsmen's Park this morn
ing, and precipitated a row. When Tommy
called on the boss President he submitted bis
figures, and Von der Ahe gasped and rolled his
eyes In holy horror. Then there ensued a hot
dialogue, interspersed with sulphurous vocal
explosion, and McCarthy retired.
Then -Silver" King, the great pitcher,
trotted a heat for the boss. "1 want $3,500,''
said Silver, "and not a ball will I pitch until I
cet It."
"I was going to give you $2,500 if you be
haved yourself," said von der Ahe. "We are
only $1,000 apart."
Von der Ahe to-nigbt gave orders to bar the
kicking players from the park. These are Mc
Carthy, King, Devlin, Chamberlain and Rob
inson. ONE FOR BARNIE.
Baltimore Beats the Senntors by a Score
of 5 to 3.

Baltimore, April 2. Only 350 people saw
the Baltimore versus Washington game here
to-day. It rained until noon and the grounds
were soggy, nevertheless both teams played
well. The visitors lost the game in the second
inning through wild pitching. Neither Keefe
nor w inston had any control of the ball. Both
nines took advantage of the tenth man rule to
chance pitchers. Foreman and Kilroy officiate
inc f or the Orioles. Mack's catching, Somere'
base Play and O'Brien's batting were the

Chicago Nominations.
A complete list of the nominations to stakes
for the summer meeting at "Washington Park,
Chicago, has been received at this office. The
list Is, Indeed, a flattering one. There are 147
nominations made for the American Derby, to
be run on June 22. E. C. Baldwin has 11 horses
named for the event, and so has J. B. Haggin.
The latter's lot includes Salvator and Fresno.
The 2-vear-old stakes have also come up well
as far as nominations are concerned, and the
same may be said of all the 3-year-oUl stakes.

Lodos-, April a This was the first day of
the Northampton and Pytchley Hunt spring
meeting. The race for Earl Spencer's plate of
600 sovereigns, a handicap for three-vear-olds
and upward, at five furlongs, was won by Lord
Dudley's old bay filly Poem, by Petrarch, out

HUSTLING FOB. A CLUB.
The Amatenra Hold a Meeting Some Sus
ccstiona Made.
A number of young men Interested in bona
fide amateur sculling held a meeting last even
ing to discuss the ways and means of organ
izing an amateur club. About a dozen men
were present, Including Manager Sweeny, of
the Duquesne Grays, and John Martin, the
prominent local oarsman. Nothing definite
was decided, but the matter was thoroughly
discussed.
One difficulty that presented itself was the
raising of funds to build a suitable boathouse.
Mr. Sweeny stated that if a sufficient number
of members could be secured a boathouse
could soon be put up. as there are several
prominent citizens willing to encourage the
proposed enterprise. During the meeting It
was pointed out thatthe Detroit Rowing Club
was without a boathouse for two years, and
during that time was a member of the Na
tional Association. If the National will admit
a Pittsburg club to membership under these
conditions a club can be organized here at once.
It was, therefore, resolved to write the Na
tional Secretary on the matter.
Various outside suggestions have been made
regarding the proposed organization. One
veil-known young athlete made the following
statement to the writer yesterday: "If the
proposed club can be made a general affair I
will bead a subscription list with $100. What I
mean by a general affair is an organization to
embrace all kinds of athletic sports, bicycling
xnd rowme. If an association of this kind was
formed it would be a success, and I am confi
dent that it would be legal in the eyes of the
national organizations."
Another young man who desires to know of
the next meeting holds to the opinion that a
club can organize to embrace at least three or
four branches of sport. He means, for in
stance, that a boat club, an athletic club and a
tennis clnb could all be leagued in a general
association. One could help another and be
under the same general management.
Altogether it seems there is a strong desire
to organize a big bona fide amateur organiza
tion in this citv. That one Is needed there can
be no doubt. In all branches of business there
are young men who bave been good amateur
performers of some sort. Undoubtedly many
of these would be wishful to join a thorough
going association.
WARD DECLARES HIMSELF.
Johnny Definitely States That He Prefers
New York.
New Yoke, April 2. John "Ward, the base
ballist, has formally notified President Hewitt,
of the Washington club, to-day that he cannot
play with the "Senators" this season. v
Mr. Hewitt returned to the capital this after
noon. Ward prefers New York to "Washington
as a place of residence, and does not fancy an
alliance with a club as weak as the "Senators"
may prove to be.

Harry Price In Town.
Harry O. Price, the ex-pool seller of this
city, arrived in town yesterday on his way from
Cleveland to New York. During a conversation
he said:
"I am on my way to New York to make ready
lor the spring races. I will have a book at the
first meeting. 1 have no opinion whatever yet
about the Suburban and Brooklyn. It is too
soon to talk definitely of it. No leading firm
that I know of is doing business on it yet."

A Good Local Catcher.
There is u good local catcher waiting for an
engagement. He is Henry Lehrman, of last
year's Homesteads, the champions of the
County League. He will be a good man for
some ot the County League clubs. He is now
residing at 1722 Josephine street, Southside.
Sporting; Notes.
A vtctoey at St Louis to-day will redeem
everything.
The New York Club has decided to play on
Staten Island.
It is much better to play losing games now
than after the 21th.
Horace and his men will tackle Cincinnati
again on the 12th Inst.
The Cincinnati Enquirer says the Pitts
burgs' uniforms take the prize for gaiety.
AN important meeting of the Homewood
Driving Park Association will be held Saturday
evening.
Sullivan has once more decided to quit
Boston for good and honor New York with his
presence.
Now will commence the tug of war between
Ward and Day, providing they both stick to
what they have said.
The Allegheny Oun Clnb held a meeting last
evening and decided to bave a charter. Abont
20 new members were admitted.
The Clios have organized for the season, and
would like to hear from all clubs whose mem

license, to be recovered before tne proper legal

are taken out, or 25 cents additional will be
