.THE PITTSBTJBG- DISPATCH, TUESDAY, APEIL' 2; .1889'. THREATS TP STRIKE. The Roughers and Catchers in Roll ing Mills Want More Wages. .ADVAXCE OP ABotT 50 PER CENT. 500 Men Thrown Idle at Jones iLansMins' .Puddling Mill. THE GKIST OF THE INDUSTRIAL MILL The roughen and catchers employed in the Tarious iron mills in this city and vicin ity are going to ask for an advance in wages. If they do not get it they claim they -will inaugurate a strike that will extend to every mill here where iron is rolled. A meeting of all the roughers and catch ers in this district has been called for the 14th inst. in Salisbury Hall, Twelfth street, Sonthside. To those who are working in 10-inch mills and lower the meeting is most important Some of the men who were in strumental in having the call sent out say the advance to be asked for will he 50 per cent. They do not expect to get so much, but think they will be able to make a com promise. The advance is to be asked for through the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers at their convention in June. The meeting to be held next Sunday week will have nothing whatever to do with the association, although the majority of the men interested are members of that organiza tion. OUTSIDEES TTH.Ii COME IS'. The meeting will not be held with open doors, but ihose who are not in the associa tion will be asked to be present. The present rates of wages, the men claim, are entirely too low, and they must have an increase. On ten-inch rolls, where there is one furnace, two roughers are employed. One of these is called the "up" and the other the "down." Some ten-inch mills have two furnaces, and upon these two roughers are emploved on each side of tne rolls. Each one of the roughers is paid for his labor one-eighth of the card rate for the selling price of what is produced in a day. The heaters secure one-fourth of the out put of the mill, and the roughers. claim there is too great a difference in the wages for the work done. There is a disposition on the part of everyday people to believe that rolling mill employes receive the very highest wares paid to skilled mechanics. From the wage scale of the Amalgamated Associa tion the following figures are taken, show ing what the roughers and catchers receive: In Oliver Bros. & Phillips' works there is a ten-inch mill, which will make on an average about seven tons of iron to the turn. THE HIGHEST KATE PAID for roughing is on the size of 1 and up ward, bv No. 10 iron, and is S3 35 per ton. If the output is seven tons, the production of the mill will be worth 523 45. Of this sum the heater gets one-fourth, or $5 86, and the rougher and catcner on-fourth between them, or 52 S3 each. The iron manufacturers claim the men are getting as much now as they can afford to pay, and cite the mills in the East, where the men are working for about 30 per cent less wages than they can get in this" city. The puddling department of Jones & Laughlms mills, on the Sonthside, is closed down. Notices were posted up on Saturday morning to the effect that the mill would close until further orders. No cause was assigned for the stoppage. The men say this is the first time the Brownstown puddle mill has shut down without cause since 1878. They claim the firm have not enough stock in the finishing department to run them three days more. Five hundred men are thrown out of employment. The votes from the Amalgamated lodges on the next year's scale are, beginningjto come in, and the iron manufacturers and their employes will go through the same maneuvering they did last year before the scale was signed. Patrick "Wilson, a member of Custer Lodge, on the Southside, and employed in Oliver's mill, is a candidate -for delegate ship from his lodge to the convention. K0SS DENIES IT. He Rays That Taxes nnd Assessments Have Not Cost Him S3 In Eight Years. "I wish you would correct the lies that appeared in a Sunday paper about D. A. 3," said Master "Workman I. N. Boss yes terday. "We have just spent over 1,200 fixing up our new hall on Filth avenue, and this certainly does not look as if the distr -.t is in a state of total collapse. "The statement about the assessments and taxes gives me the largest kind of a pain. I have been a memoer of the order for the past eight years, and in all that time the taxes and 'assessments to keep up our gen eral officers have not cost me $3, and I have paid as much as any man in the organiza tion. The per capita tax which is levied to pay the general officers' salaries is only 24 cents per annum. "When I liear a man talking about -the oporessed laboring man keeping up 'poverty palace I wonder why it is that they allow such men to run at Urge." ' CHANGED THE CLASSIFICATION. Railroad Agents Ask That the Request of Shippers be Granted. A meeting of the Pittsburg Committee of Freight Agents was held yesterdaj after noon in the office of Division Freight Agent Means, of the Pennsylvania Company. Tt was decided to make a recommendation to the Classification Committee to reduce the classification on glassware, as per the re quest of Pittsburg shippers. The committee recommended that electric light globes be changed from double-first to first-class, and bottles from second and fourth class to third and fifth, The whole glassware classification was recommended to be changed in some particular. The minimum carload weight on chimneys and table glassware will be 16,000 pounds. TUET WILL K0T STEIKE. TheN. P. U. miners ntScottdale Will Re main nt Work for the Present. A meeting of the National Progressive Miners' Union was held at Scottdalc yester day. It was decided to remain at work for the present A resolution was adopted re questing all operators to pay by the hun dred bushels instead of by the wagons. Notices will be posted at the Frick works to-morrow, notifying the men of the re duction in wages in accordance with the agreement of February 15. There is little prospect of a strike in the "region until after the Knights of Labor meeting on the 13th instant. Miners Will Obfcct to It. John B. Bae, Master Workman of N. D. A. 135 Knights of-Labor miners, was in the city yesterday, and went to Shire Oaks, on the Monongabela Biver. where he addressed a larpp-uiicd meeting last night. He said the miners along the river would not accept any reduction on the present waees. The Scnle Being Signed. The brickmaters' scale is now being signed, and it is not at all likely rhat there will be anv troubles Master Workman James Hoop'er, of L. A. 2946, said yester day that all the owners of the yards in the city would sign without objecting. Bonders' Exchange Meeting. The regular monthly meeting of the Builders' Exchange was held yesterday. Nothing but routine bnsiness was trans- ittge bull, acted. The new' building was not touched upon at all. People, are wise in this generation and know a good thing when they see it.
