Church. THE DIRECTORS' ANNUAL MEETING The annual directors' meetinc of the Al legheny Theological Seminary was held yesterday afternoon, Vice President Kalph presiding. The reports of the various offi cers were read, showing that OTer 53,000 was in the treasury and at the disposal of the Board. The young men's fund amounts to 56,400, and the financial agent reported that $30,000 had been added to the endowment fund during; the last few months, swelling it to 5140,000. The current expense fund amounts to 514, 07G 92, and the fund of public scholarship to 5650. The ceneral condition of the semi nary was found to be flourishing, there be ing 52 students in attendance this year. After the election of Dr. Thos. Balph as President, Dr. VT. E. McKce as Vice Presi dent, and Dr. "W. J. Robinson as Secre tary, the meeting was adjourned until this morning, when the question of filling the vacant chair of church history will come up. The commencement exercises of the seminary were taken up last night at the Third V. P. Church, on Diamond street, Pittsburg. The graduating class numbers fifteen, seven of whom delivered papers on religious topics. After prayer by President Alex. Young, D. D., Mr. "W". A. Monks read a paper on the formation of the Ifew Testament Canon, in which he traced its authenticity from apos tolic times down to the modern day. He was followed by J. C. Kistler, who spoke on church government. He presented the various church governments very clearly and compared the advantages of the Pres byterian system to those of otner methods, and concluded by pointing to Presbyterian ism as the creat ralb ing ground to which all Christian sects were tending. Mr. F. E. Holliday next presented a paper on "Textual Criticism," In which he very ably set forth the different methods ot arriving at the correct Biblical versions of disputed passages. A paper on the "Life of Christ," by Mr. E. M. Giffen, came next The speaker compared the average life of the Christian to a water course, through which flowed a stream that, originally pure, was contaminated by the soil of the water course. An interesting paper on the "Reasons for Be lieving the Bible" was presented, which pat forth that the Bible was to be believed, as everv one of the prophecies it contained were fulfilled, citing those which were made in regard to the downfall of Egypt and Jerusalem and the coming of Christ. The "Martyr Reformation" was the subject of T. F. Cummings' discourse. The speaker referred mainly to the persecution of the Hueuenots, in which he descried the policy of the Roman Church then, and saying "Rome is tolerant to-dav because she must." The clos ing discourse was held by H. H. Bell, and his subject was "The Field is the 'World." In it he spoke of the whole world being a field for the sowing of the gospel, and that this had been the motto of Christ. He closed by giving some interesting figutes and statements in re gard to modern missionary work. .The benediction by the Rev. Alex Young concluded the evening's exercises. fimNQ8m(rfoPR. nwfa-iriepEr CJIARLOTTE EUSSE.
