Yesterday afternoon the medal -voted by
Council to Peter Snyder, of the Eagle'Fire
Company Ko. 1, for bravery at the "Wood
street disaster, was presented at City Hall.
A joint session of Councils was held for the
purpose of presenting the medal, President
Ford, of Select Council, presiding, and Mr.
Snyder sitting in the President's desk with
the heads of the two branches of Council.
The medal is a bronze Maltese cross. On
the face are the city's arms in gold, sur
rounded by a laurel wreath in green gold.
On the obverse is an inscription which
reads:

The cross bangs by three bronze chains from
a bar which bears the Inscription in black let
ters. "For Bravery." Mr. W. A. Magee
presented the medal. He said:
I am delegated to perform what Is to jne a very
pleasant duty In carrying out the directions of a
resolution passed unanimously by both branches
of Councils and approved by the Mayor, votlue a
medal or decoration toTctcr bnjder, of Engine
Company No. 1. for venturing his own life to save
that of another at the time of .the illey disaster.
1 have here the decoration, prepared in accord
ance with the resolution. It Is not the intrinsic
worth of the medal that (rives it value, but the fact
that it Is given for bravery for courage of an ex-traordlnarvorder.-

As Mr. Magee pinned the medal on Fireman
bnyder the Conncilmon commenced to ap
plaud, and the lobby, which was crowded,
took the signal, and made more noise than has
been heard in tbe Council chamber for years.
Sir. XL. I. Gourley responded for Mr. Snyder.
He said:
In all ages the people of every country and clime
have crowned with honor heroic deeds and devo
tion to duty. It has been said that opportunity
makes the man; but borne one has more truthfully

bered as tbe kind, the sympathetic, the great
hearted, the heroic man.
In a more humble sphere. John Maynard, the
pilot of Lake Erie, presents to the world an en
during example of heroism and devotion to duty.
He beached the ship, he saved the lives of 1,000
people. He died that those Intrusted to his care
and protection might live. And so with Fete
bnyder. of Engine Company No. 1. He came
with others to the rescue of those burled under
the wreck and the ruin that followed in tbe wake
of tbe tempest. He risked bis own life under the
shadow of the crumbling walls In order that he
might rescue the wounded bodv of a little mes
senger boy AH honor to Fete bnyder. On his
behalf I accept this beautiful medal.

AN ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING THE
construction of a sewer on Lowell street,
from Shetland street to Renfrew street.
Section 1 Be it ordained and enacted by tho
city of Pittsburg, in Select and Common Coud
cils assembled, and it is hereby ordained -and
enacted by the authority of the same. That
the Chief of Department of PuDlio Works b
and is hereby authorized and directed to ad
vertise in accordance with the acts of Assent'

and the ordinances of tbe said city of Pitts
burg relating thereto and regulating the same,
for proposals for the construction of a pipe
sewer 15 inches in diameter on Lowell street,
from Shetland street to a connection,. with,
