s? .'3 -" THRFAMERS' PRIDE. " Are Tutti-Prntti, Progressive Enchre -and Laces Ruining Him? SUGGESTIVE COMPARISONS GIVEN As a Eesult or Testimony That it Costs s, . 300 a Head on a Farm. " THE LAXD WO.VT HELD IT ORDINAEILY ""Is farming a failure," in Allegheny county? has olten been asked and gener ally answered in the affirmative. The an swer has puzzled many people, and the ex planation tendered has generally been a compound one, tbat competition with local ities that could get stuff in earlier than it .could be grown here, and at but little more cost tor 2,000 miles transportation than for ten, had done the business, first, by getting it in earlier and taking the wire edge ofi appetite; and secondly, by farming land as sessed at $5 or $10 an acre, while here it is assessed at $50 to $300 an acre. Strange things happen in these days of upset-preconcieved ideas, opinions and methods. The great and only Napoleon thought he bad said something when he in formed his army, standing in the shadow of the pyramids, tbat 40 centuries looked down on them. But Napoleon never dreamed that 41 centuries in the shadow of the same pyramids would look down upon a game of baseball, played by an American team. "What the mighty Anson might have said had he made a speech, it is DIFFICULT TO CONJECTURE, but though the reader may not perceive much coherence of reason in the parallel, it may serve to introduce one reason why farming does not pay in Allegheny county. That reason seems to be tbat the standard of living is set higher much higher than in farming communities generally while receipts have not kept pace. Judge Hawkins listened to testimony the other da; in the Orphans' Court on the subject of cost of living on Allegheny county farms, and it was developed tbat there was a vast variety of opinion on the subject. A lady, a widow, was the plaintiff, and some of her wit nesses testified that their family expenses amounted to $300 a head annually. Some other of her witnesses, however, thought this a steep figure, and on the other side witnesses testified that they bad known women to live well, and even save money, on a dower of $100 a year and free rent. Bnt the question is interesting as a solution of the other question. Is farming in Allegheny connty a failure? The farming population is, as a rule, prolific, and eight to a family is not at all uncommon. On a farm of 100 acres, valued at S50 an acre, there must necessarily be a capitalization of $7,000. Hay is said to be about the most remunerative crop that a fanner in this connty can cultivate, unless be be so sitnated that he can garden with profit, and bnt few can. JUST IMAGINE IT. Two tons of timothy to the acre are a large averace crop, one year with another. Suppose a family of eight were to harvest and haul this hay to market themselves, they would jnst realize at $15 a ton, f nil average price $3,000 gross. Ont of this must come fully 1 per cent for taxes, $70. Then there would be insurance, say $10 a year, repairs, $100 a jear, and fertil izer at least $200 a year more to keep tbat land in even moderately good condition, which would leave but $220 for interest on $7,000. This is on a basis, of full crop: bnt every farnfer knows tbat on such a farm at least every three years there would be a 50 per cent failure of crop, so tbat on snch year there wonld be a net deficit in the family budget of $900, or more than the profits of four j ears. There is evidently an error somewhere and it must be in the over-rating of family expenses, for it is well known tbat some farmers not only feed and clothe their families comfortably, bnt store up money beside. Come to think of it, an expenditure of $2,400 in the country wonld produce the equal ot one of $4,000 a year in the city. Farmers are evidently becoming too proud stomached lor the safety of a republic Tutti-frutti, progressive euchre, silk laces and jewelry, ana a season box at the, opera may eventually be classed as necessities in the farmer's family, bnt not likely before the open ing of the twentieth century. BEEKT IS HELD. He Is Jailed, Charted by the Coroner 'With Killing Ben Sloneby. Coroner McDowell resumed the inquest yesterday on the body of Ben Jloseby, found "in Chartiers creek last week. Mrs. Josephine Clifford, Mrs. Flora Jloseby, the dead man's widow, and Jlrs. Mitchell, of Mans field, testified, and, their evidence being very indefinite, the jury brought in a verdict to the effect that the deceased had been found drowned, with bis neck broken, and that John Brent was present at the time. This verdict practically holds Brent on a charge of murder. Brent, when seen in prison, denied the charge, or that he ever bad any trouble with the deceased. Dyspepsia and Torpid Liver. Nathaniel Hyatt, Insurance Department, Albany, N. T writes: "I have been a great sufferer from dyspepsia, water brash, acid stomach and constipation for the last 15 months. Some time ago I read in one of Brandreth's Calendars the case of a gentleman in Albany who was cured of a simi lar affliction by using Allcock"s Porous Plasters. Knowing the gentleman referred to, I purchased three one I wore on the pit of the stomach, and two on my right side. I wore them a week, then took a bath and removed the plasters. I washed the places with cologne, rubbed them dr and then applied fresh ALL COCK'S Porous Plasters. I found my appe tite and digestion much improved in two weeks; in three weeks my bowels became reg ular, and. after using the plasters for four weeks, 1 I onnd myself entirely cured."
