ALABAMA YOUNG MEN
"'Who Eepresent tbe Sew South Spirit
and Its White Chivalry,
;? ELL HOW THET FIX THE KEGEOES
"Black Help Must Work on All Election
Dajs, or Be Discharged.
THE PEOBLEM THAT DIXIE DISLIKES
The Jefferson Volunteers, of Birmingham,
Ala., paid Pittshurg a "visit yesterday to see
the iron mills. They are the only organized
body from the South that 'attended the in
auguration. The company consists or40 in
number, all protection Democrats, tinder
the command of Captain Clark. The ma
jority of them are the well-heeled sons of
Southern planters. They left last evening
for Cincinnati, after paying Pittsburg some
fine compliments.
"We came North," said J. T. Terry, Jr.,
a bright .young fellow, "to show the people
np here that we bear no animosity against
them or the Govorment. Some of the local
politicians at home censured us; but the South
ern people proper indorsed our course. We
are all young voters, averaging In age about 24.
Randall is our leader, and I may say that most
of tbe Democrat) in Birmingham believe in
protection. The people of the South feel
kindly to the North, and, we hope we com
mand its respect.
The stories that hatred and bitterness exist
between the two sections emanate from de
sign lug" politicians.
HE ONLT MUST BE WHITE.
"It doesn't make any difference to us who is
at the bead of the Government, as lone as he is
a white man. The Southern people are not
officeseekers, und we are perfectly willing to be
ruled by Northerners, provided they are honest
men. We have some fine Republicans In the
South; but they are all imported. We call the
home Republicans 'scalawags,' and they de
serve the name.
"The great problem in tbe Sonth is what to
do with tbe negro. It is a daily contest be
tween brains and ignorance, we will never
allow tbe blacks to be placed over us, and we
think our policy is just. The country
belongs to us; we occupied it first, and they are
a lot if ignorant interlopers that wc would like
to get rid ot. We feel that some action must
soon be taken against tbem, but we hardly
know what shape it will assume.
"We desire to deal justly with the colored
man. I only wish the Jsorth could get a good
taste tit these people, and then they could ap
preciate, tbe position in which we are placed.
We are all Democrats, for self-protection.
Even Northern Republicans who live with us
vote the Democratic ticket for local officers.
They haven't any desire, either, to be governed
bv ignorant negroes.
ADMITTIXG THE FACT.
"The fact is the negroes actually have the
numbers in our section, and could outvote us.
If we would allow them. Wo never resort to
stuffing the ballot box, however, to get ahead
of them; but we use other stratagems. They
are easily bought np, and sometimes we vote
them in squads. Very often we will not permit
them to vote, and we keep them away from the
polls, by working them all day. Most negroes
are servants of the whites, and we gravely in
form them thatif they leave their work on elec
tion day, even for a moment, tbey will be dis
charged. This threat usually works like a
charm. W e know it isn't quite a square deal;
but what else can we do?
"The freedom of tbe colored people was a
good thing for the Sooth. Before the war we
were responsible for their living; now they will
work for little or nothing, and tbey have to
hnstle for subsistence. The cost to the planter
is less than in ante-bellum days, and beside tbe
responsibility of caring for tbem is removed.
"As I said before, we don't care who our
rulers are, but we do draw tbe line when it
comes down to negro government."
