MAliT GOOD SPEAKERS AKE PRESENT
Eow after row (pronounced with the long
sound of the "o") of seated spectators, with
an accompanying fringe standing in the
rear, filled the Opera Hoase last evening.
It was the second meeting of the series
which are to be held in this theater. Mr.
J. "W. Moreland appeared in the leading
role and was ably supported by a picked
company, including one funny comedian,
and an enlarged and magnificent chorus.
An organ was buried somewhere beneath
the floor.
The opening hymn was finished, and Mr.
John M. Bailey was introduced to make a
few remarks. In his address he told several
anecdotes bearing upon the question. His
address was otherwise short He said:
It may seem somewhat novel, this discussion
of political themes on the Sabbath. This cause
is -vital, though, to the best interests of those
whom we love. I defy any man to separate the
cause of temperance from that of religion. I
think we are perfectly justifiable in dis
cussing temperance on the Sabbath day. For
the past 60 years we have been carrying on the
temperance work like men in a muddy river
We now propose to go to the source of this
river, and remove the cause. We want some
self-sacrifice In this business. We have to
give onr best efforts, tune and money in this
cause.
A VERY SUDDJJT CONVERSION.
Guard against the insidious arguments of the
enemy. It is not a strange thing how quickly
the saloonkeepers have been converted to high
license? A few months ago they were oppos
ing this very same high license. More money
has been spent in the past campaign than
would convert China. This word of warn
ing I wish to give to you in regard to their
arguments: "Just beware of snakes.-' They
do not put forth one argument that does
not contain a snake.'
"When the speaker had concluded there
was general applause, and the boys in the
gallery became very enthusiastic, and ap
plauded him very heartily. He did not re
spond to the encore, however.
Eev. J. -B. Koehne was introduced, and
the noise in the gallery continued. He re
lated an .experience he had in "Washington
last week, when a man had asked him to
step around the corner out of the rain and
take a drink. Dr. Bullen here intro
duced an audible Tes," which rather
disconcerted the 'speaker, and caused
a laugh in the audience. His assent was
given at just about the time the man in
vited would have given his, only he did not;
out it sounded realistic enough. Bev. Mr.
Koehne gave a little more of his experience
with water in "Washington, which, many
visitors at the capital assert, was so common
that it was found in the very whisky
that Mr. Koehne refused. Continuing,
he described the fascinating barkeepers ot
Pittsburg. Dr. Bullen again approved and
gave a hearty appro val of the description.
The speaker then waxed sarcastic, and de-.
scribed a Pittsburg detective's murder, and
said a jury was afraid to hang a man in this
county.
rULli OF SARCASM.
He said he once lived in a town which
had a magnificent Council like Pittsburg's,
who persisted in passing foolish laws, and
allowed the liquor seller to escape.
Dr. Harry Bullen met with an enthusias
tic reception from both the parquet and the
gallery gods. He prefaced his remarks by
saying: "I am right here, boys!" "(Jet out
of there, then!" said a voice in the gallery,
which sounded as musicabas.3 soldcplayed
on a file and a piece of steel. "1 have been
right there for 30 years, boys," said the
doctor, more seriously. "This tells it.
Last Monday night I promised you
a nice speech. Some voice in galleryr
"That's what !" 2f ow here it is: "We want
some money. I want to raise 100 in five
minutes. I am going to send the ushers
through the audience with baskets, and
want 5100." At the conclusion of his re
marks the cry was raised, "Hurrah for Dr.
Bullen," by the boys. The ushers then
proceeded to collect the 100.
Mr. Joseph K. Hunter was introdnced.
He spoke upon the amendment question,
and said he was in favor of paying saloon
keepers and manufacturers for damages, if
the law gave them the right to sell liquor.
He then advanced several arguments in
favor of prohibition.
Captain J. K Barbour then proceeded to
tell the audience what a wonderful differ
ence there was in him since he had quit
drinking and how he had improved.
Invitations were extended to pledge-signers
when he concluded, and there were sev
eral responses. The audience dispersed
when the choir had sung another hymn. .

wagons, carriages, buggies, etc, must pay their
license at this office forthwith. AU licenses not
paid on or before- first Monday in March, 1888,
will be placed in the bands of police officers for
collection, subject to a collection fee of 50
cents, and all persons neglecting to pay on or
before first Monday in May, 1889, will be sub
ject to a penalty double -the amount of the
license, to be recovered before the proper legal
authorities ot said city. The old metal plate of
last year must be returned at the time licenses
are taken out, or 25 cents additional will be
