The Thirtieth inauguration that the
country has witnessed is over. Inaugura
tion day, except in a few cases, has always
been an occasion of great display and cere
mony. But what wonld the country say
to-day if Mrs. Harrison had remained in
Indianapolis instead of accompanying her
husband to Washington?
Had she done this she wonld have only
been following in the footsteps of ah illus
trious predecessor, who was none other than
the first lady of the land and the wife of the
father of his country. George "Washington
was inaugurated in 2Tew York, and a week
later held a reception which the elite of the
city attended, and though beauty and gayety
were there in full force Martha was not.
She didn't like balls, and as there was
dancing on this occasion this may have been
"her reason for remaining away. Mrs.
"Washington
EEMAIKED AX MOUNT TEENOK
until May 17 nearly three weeks after the
inauguration, then left home in, her own
carriage, accompanied by her grandchil
dren, Eleanor Cuitis and George Washing
ton P. Cnstis, with a small equestrian
escort. She was entertained at Philadelphia
by Robert Morris, and at Elizabethtown by
Governor William Livingston and his
daughters. Here she was met by her hus
band in a splendid barge, and she landed in
New York under a salnte of 13 guns. Mrs.
Washington held the first of her levees on
the 29th of May, a month after the inaugu
ration, and they were continued every Fri
day evening from 8 till 10.
The wife of John Adams was a lady of
higher social position than her husband at
the time of their marriage in 17&1. Her
maiden name was Abigail Smith, and she
was a social favorite in the town where she
was born and reared. There Is no record of
an inangnral ball either in Adams' or Jef
ferson's time.
DASHIKO DOLLY MADISOJT.
Jefferson's wife, at the time he became
President, had been dead 10 years, yet the
White House was not without its attrac
tions of female beauty. Mrs. Madison and
the Secretary of State stayed with the Presi
dent while his own house was getting ready.
Jefferson's daughter, Martha Randolph,
mother of Mrs. Merkleham, recently de
ceased, of this city, lent a charm to the
beanty circle. Jefferson's other daughter
visited the White House only once. She
had married a Mr. Epps, of Virginia, who
was afterward a Senator. She died during
Jefferson's administration.
The first inauguration of James Madison
took place on the 4th of March, 1809. His
wife, Dolly Madison, had Deen a favorite
figure at the White House in Jefferson's
sterile times. The inauguration ball was a
grand affair. Mrs. Madison wore a gorgeous
robe of buff velvet. It is said that she
moved and looked like a queen. She wore
full strings of pearls upon her neck and
anus, and on ner head was a Paris turban,
set with bird of paradise plumes. She wore
shockingly low gowns. She dressed to
please other people. Mrs. Madison was ofa
sunny nature, and her turban was always
conspicuous. She painted and patched and
ppwdered.
Mrs. Monroe was an elegant and accom
plished woman. She was Miss Elizabeth
Kortright, a native of New York City. She
and her sister were belles during the Revo
lutionary war, and were courted by both
American and British officers, and Eliza
beth was ridiculed for not making a better
match, but this wa3 before her husband be
came President.
FIEST MISTBESS OF THE WHITE HOUSE.
When John Qujncy Adams was inaugu
rated, March 4, 1823, his wife was in such
delicate health that a punch bowl, set out
for his private friends, was the chief attrac
tion of inauguration evening. Mrs. Adams
had given a ball, but it was during the ad
ministration of President Monroe, while
her husband was Monroe's" Secretary of
State. It was a gorgeous affair. Her dress
was of steel llama and her throat and arms
were covered with glittering cut steel orna
ments. Her kid gloves, reaching to the
elbow, were so fine that they were imported
in the shell of an English walnut. Her
hair was rolled high and decked with
ostrich feathers. General Jackson was
there, a devoted beau, in blue coat, brass
buttons and pumps. It is said that Web
ster and Calhoun indulged in the dance
upon this occasion. Mrs. Adams was the
first lady who resided at the White House.
spread over society, on the death of his wife,
which was not suggestive 01 balls and
gayety; but there was some gay company in
and around the White House.
. For some months after President Van
Buren took possession of the Executive Man
sion the White House was without a mis
tress. Mrs. Van Buren had been dead many
years, but in 'November, 1837, Colonel
Abram Tan Buren, the President's son and
Private Secretary, married Angelica Sin
gleton, of Sonth Carolina, who had spent
the previous winter in Washington in the
family of her relative. Senator Preston.
She was a lady of great beauty of face and
charm of manner, and by her vivacity and
accomplishments was admirably fitted to
shine" in the position her marriage gave her.
rjr TTLEB'S TIME.
At the time William Henry Harrison
"was inaugurated Mrs. Harrison, his aged
wife, was in feeble health when he left his
home at North Bend for Washington, and
she was destined never to be actively the
mistress of the White House. On the 4th
of April, just one month from his inaugu
ration, President Harrison died. When
Tyler succeeded to the office he made the
White House the center of social gayety.
Miss Letitia Christian Tyler, the President's
first wife, was still living, but the state of
her health required that she should delegate
her semi-official duties to some mem
ber of her family. These finally de
volved upon Mrs. Robert Tyler,
who was a daughter of Cooper, the
tragedian. During the time that Mrs.
"Virginia Cooper Tyler acted as Mrs. Tyler's
deputy some of the most noteworthy recep
tions were given that ever took place in the
White House. One of the early social
events of the Tyler administration was the
children's fancy dress ball that President
Tyler gave In honor of the birthday of his
eldest granddaughter. Dressed as a fairy,
with gossamer wings, wearing a diamond
star on her forehead and holding a silver
wand, she welcomed her gnests to fairy-land.
The President's third daughter was married
in the White House on the last day of Jan
uarvj 1842, the wedding being, of course, a
brilliant one.
Mrs. Tyler died September 10, 1842. Two
years later, on the 26th of June. 1844, Presi
dent Tyler married Miss Julia Gardiner
at the Church of the Ascension in New
York. "Mrs. Julia Gardiner Tyler was at
onceinstalled as mistress of the White
Honse. She was the first bride introduced
by a President of the United States into the
Executive Mansion. .
MBS. POLK AS A HOSTESS.
Mrs. Polk, who is still living, was 41
years old when' she entered the White
Souse as its mistress. She was a strict
Presbyterian and shunned what she re
garded as the "vanities of the world. She
wonld not permit dancing at the White
House, over which she presided with great
-dignity, introducing a sober formality into
the receptions and drawing rooms, but
without giving offense. She had a pleasant
smile for all the President's guests and
welcomed them with a graceful simplicity
of manner that never failed to please.
President Taylor's life in the White
House can scarcelv be called a social sae-
eess. His experience had beea alasost
wholly of the camp, and hiswife. and even
his youngest daughter, "Betty,"had shared
his nomadic existence. In the society of
fashionable ladies the President was awk
ward, and Mrs. Taylor was so averse to the
duties imposed upon her by her position
that she was accustomed to pass the time
sittipg patiently in her own room plying
her knitting needles and occasionally
smoking her pipe. Mrs. Bliss (Betty) ia
consequence did the honors of the estab
lishment "with the artlessuess of a rustia '
belle and thegrace of a duchess." "
To Mr. and Mrs. Fillmore there Vast
nothing possible except the routine life of
the. White House. Before her marriage
Abigail Pillmore had been a teacher, and
she was always a student. It is to her
credit that to her personal needs was due
the fact that Congress was induced for the
first time to supply books as part of the
furniture of the Executive Mansion. Mrs.
Fillmore's health while she was hostess of
the White Honse was delicate, and she
never aimed to become a social leader.
MB3. PIEECE AS D HABBIET LA2TE.
President and Mrs. Pierce greatly re
laxed the etiquette of the White House.
Old New Hampshire friends holding clerk
ships in Washington not only were not for
gotten, but were visited by Mrs. Pierce and
invited to dine at the President's table.
This accomplished lady came to Washing
ton suffering under the weight of a heavy
bereavement the death of her only son in
a railroad accident a few weeks before.
Mrs. Pierce as lady of the White House left
many agreeable memories behind her, but
enfeebled by sorrow and in delicate health
she performed her pnblic duties with the
least possible ostentation.
Harriet Lane, the President's niece, acted
as mistress of the White House during the
next four years. She was born in the
Cumberland: valley, and had been carefnlly
educated, had long been an inmate of her
uncle's household and possessed a laree ex
perience of society, having been the hostess
of the American Embassy while Mr.
Buchanan was Minister to England. She
performed her duties with grace and dis
tinction. The White House during President Lin-i
coin's incumbency was not gay. Mrs. Iin.
coin was ambitious, but she was singularly
ill-fitted to be a President's wife. Hospi
tality to her was a burden. She was dis
inclined to observe the social requirements
of her position. She gave receptions, but
they were cold and formal and generally re
sorted to by strangers in Washington.
Andrew Johnson's wife was an invalid
and his daughter, Mrs. Martha Johnson
Patterson, acted as the mistress of the
Executive Mansion. She was an educated
and accomplished lady.
Mrs. Grant as mistress of the White
House was always unobtrusive, and at first
her official receptions and dinners passed
off without any great eclat They increased
in brilliancy, however, as the vears went
by. The one great social event of President
Grant's administration was the marriage in
1874 in the great East Eoom of the White
House of his only daughter, Miss Nellie
Grant
FEOM GBAST TO HABBIS03-.
Mrs. Hayes was a charming lady, but her
attempt to banish wine from the White
House table put her, to a certain extent,
under the social ban. Mrs. Lucretia Gar
field, familiarly called by her husband,
"Crete," begana promising career as tha
lady of the White House. Lady-like,
sweet-voiced, easy of deportment, well in
formed, anxious to please but unwilling to
be patronized, she besran her receptions
firmly, kindly, successfully. But thegreat
sorrow soon came and she left the White
House not to return again. Mis3 Nellie
Arthur was too young to assume the duties
of hostess of the White House, and these
devolved upon the President's sister, Mrs.
McElroy. She. however, was able to eive
comparatively little time to her brother's.
household, out the ladies of his caomet
came to the President g rescue.
As President Cleveland was abachelor he
installed his sister, Miss Bose Elizabeth,
Cleveland, as hostess of the White House.
She held this place until Prances Polsom
Cleveland came to do the honors. That she
has been as capable and charminga mistress'
as tne mansion ever had goes without saying.
ME3. HAEBISON AS A HOUSEWIFE.
A Remarkable Quilt of Patchwork That Sh
Has Planned.
Indianapolis Journal.
Mrs. Harrison will be missed in the social
circles of the city. She is one of the mosti
cordial of hostesses. To watch, her receive
guests whom she has never seen, who walkj
in at the ever-open door and introduce them
selves, one would drop the link of intro
duction and believe Mrs. Harrison had
known her visitors well before, and all is
accomplished with so much grace and
tact that not only the newcomer, but the
beholder is charmed. Mrs. Harrison is not!
a society star, nor does she aspire to that
role; and while she can entertain, her hab-l
its and preferences are for a domestio life.'
Many a time sinc,e the rush of visitors be-.
gan has she left work in the kitchen and
gone to the parlor. Her desire to keep her
household arrangements running smoothly,
and to do her duty to the public as well,
was more wearing to her than her multi
plicity of household, church and social du
ties had ever been before, and many solicit
ous friends feared she would be seriously ill
before she went to the White House.
Considering the several phases of house
keeping as accomplishments, Mrs Har
rison is a very accomplished woman.
There is no branch of housekeeping that
she does not thoroughly understand, and
none that she 'cannot do if occasion de
mand. The arts of cooking, pickling and
preserving, as well as sewing, she compre
hends. One of her accomplishments, which,
she greatly delights in, is painting. 8hei3
a skillful artist, and her painting on china
equals the bestdone by professionals here.
She has stndied the various teachers.
She is as enthusiastic in her
art as can be, and was instru
mental in forming a class, of which,
she was one member. She did not secure a
teacher and leave it entirely to others to at
tend to, but, until her time was so crowded j
ny visitors, she worEed in the studio. She
does not intend to let this pleasure of paint
ing be entirely neglected while living in
Washington, but amjng her carefully
packed articles are her accoutrements of
art She has already planned for the better
preservation of the many badges, not only
of this campaign, but those of 1840, which,
have been sent to General Harrison and
herself to make a quilt, not a crazy patch
by any means, but a carefnlly arranged
souvenir of their experience of 1888.
