The sporting public throughout the coun
try will not be surprised to learn this morn
ing that O'Connor won the boat race yester
iay between himself and Gaudaur. The
race was lor the championship ot America
and an alleged stake of $1,000 a side. The
sontest, if such it can be called, was more
it a burlesque than anything else, according
:o accounts. A special dispatch to this paper
from 'Frisco gives the following account of the
race:
'Today's race, or fiasco, between 'William
O'Connor, the champion, and Jake Gaudaur.
iras a laughable affair. The truth is it was no
race at all, as Gaudaur only rowed about a
quarter of a mile. The result was a foregone
lonc'usioo. however, andbas been looked upon
is such ever since the rowers came here. They

And nothing else. The public soon became
aware of this, and consequently no Interest
whatever has been taken In the race. It has
generally been considered that O'Connor dare
not, for the sake of his reputation and other
important considerations, lose the race. This
convinced everybody that it was only a hippo
drome. Asa result there was no betting on
the affair worth mentioning.
"The water was lumpy to-day when the men
rowed to the starting point, and the attendance
was not large. Nobody seemed inclined to bet
and there was no enthusiasm. At the word
Go' O'Connor got best away and really made a
good start considering the state of the water.
On the other hand, Gaudaur started as if he
was a beaten man before the word was given.
He struck the water in a careless and unsteady
way. O'Connor soon showed to the front and
sent bis shell ahead at a clipping pace. He
soon began to leave Gaudaur behind, and the
latter was so far in the rear when only a quarter
of a mile had been covered that he retired from
the race, claiming the water was too rough for
him to row.
O'COJflfOE'S GOOD TIME.
"O'Connor kept on rowing in excellent form,
and it was evident he meant to cover the three
miles in good time. He accomplished this
when the rough state of the water is taken into
account. He finished the entire distance in 19
minutes and 45 seconds. This excellent per
formance was the only redeeming feature in
the affair. He certainly proved himself to be
an extraordinary sculler, and good authorities
think he is the best sculler who has ever been
in this city.
"It is not improbable that a match will be
made between Gaudaur and Peterson, as the
latter's backers think he can defeat Gaudaur.
O'Connor intends to proceed to Australia."
The above account cannot fail to prompt a
general regret among all those interested in
aquatics. Almost everybody must regret that
such an excellent rower as O'Connor should
have been connected with yesterday's
affair at alk However, the fact re
mains that he is a champion
and one who will likely hold his own against
anvbodv. The easv way in which he left Gau
daur behind yesterday, and the excellent time
he made under unfavorable circumstances,
only tend to show that he Is a better rower than
either Teemer or Gaudaur; in fact it proves
the correctness of his form when he defeated
Teemer. O'Connor cannot well avoid going to
Australia now. and if he goes Henry Searle
will have to be the best sculler that ever sat in
a boat to defeat him.

Cincinnati Inclined to Treat the Plttsbnrgcr

Elmer Smith still lingers outside the contract
fold. He has shown no disposition to sign at
liberal figures, and now it is tbMJiricinnati
club's turn to repay him in kind. The club offi
cers will pay no further attention to the Smoky
City lad. Should he fail to sign before April 1
his salary will be 300 less than was offered him
some weeks ago. For every day he remains
outside the fold after that it will cost him $25,
and if he is not with the team by April 15 his
salary w ill be 1,200 for the season. This is the
final decision of the Cincinnati club.

Schmelz will unearth some phenomenon who

if help is necessary. Manager Schmelz has
been very fortunate in this regard. If the En
quirer readers remember, it was in this way
that AA'idner got his start. He was taken as a
rank amateur by Manager Schmelz, and de
veloped into a good player. Last j ear Manager
Schmelz discovered young AA'eyhmg. This
j ear, with Long John Reilly's Springville
phenomenon and young Yost he will have
material to select from. The Cincinnati club
has not givenup the idea of jet signing Heck
er. They have never made a direct offer of
any amount of money, but they stand in readi
ness to give as much as any other club in the

A PLEASANT EVENT.
The Third Annual Dinner of the J. H. Porte
Fishing CInb.
The third annual dinner of the J. H. Porte
Fishing Club was held at the Monongahela
House yesterday afternoon. It was really a
grand affair, in fact it eclipsed all previous af
fairs of the kind. There were 31 guests present
and the bill of fare was sumptuous enough for
royalty. Among those present were James H.
Porte. M. J. Lunn, Dr. Cotton, J. Sageman, J.
W. Huge, G. H. Everson and others. The last
named gentleman ably presided over the pro
ceedings. The excellent dinner was finished at 4:30 and
then J. W. Hague then entertained the com
pany with an interesting and instructive dis
course on the Western and Northwestern
hunting and fishing resorts. He illustrated his
remarks with photographic pictures of various
places that he has visited.
The club is, undoubtedly, one of the most
harmonious in Western Pennsylvania. It is in
excellent condition in all respects. The mem
bers have decided to camp in some part of
Canada next summer. Mr. Porte will leave for
Canada in a few days to select a camping
place. The club will leave for camp on July 5.
What Blackhnr.t Says.
Referring to the Glasscock case Attorney
Blackhurst says that there was no truth what
ever in the statement that be was the attor
ney for the brotherhood, and he had no con
nection whatever with that organization. He
said that he was, however, the attorney for
Shortstop Glasscock, of the Indianapolis club,
and will go to Washington to-morrow to see
President If. E. Young, of the League, and
attempt to settle Glasscock's case with him,
without an appeal to law. Jle thought that
difficulties between clubs and their players
should be settled between themselves, and that
there should be no outside interference.
The Deacon nt Buffalo.
BTJTTAW), March 3. 'Deacpn" White and
family arrived yesterday from Detroit, and will
reside here permanently. The "Deacon" does
not say much about his intentions in regard to
getting a release from Detroit, but says he will
play with the Buffalo club or not play at all.
When asked what he thought of the plan to
send bim to Pittsburg ana Bowe to Boston, he
replied that there was nothing in it, and that
he had not the slightest intention to play in
either of the cities.
They Will Fight.
Chicago. March 3. "Parson" Davies left to
night for Boston, where he will conclude the
final arrangements of the Ike Weir-Murphy
fight. These celebrated feather-weights will
positively come together between the 16th and
JSd of the -present month, within 40 milts of
miles of Chicago, reports to the contrary not

lutb, was knocked out by Jack Cotton, of Chi

Patsey Cardiff Leaves for Frisco to Meet
, the Colored Man.
Sr. Pawis Murx., March 3. Patsey Cardiff,
-accompanied by John Donaldson, his backer
and trainer, started ,f or San Francisco this
morning. There was a big crowd of friends
and sporting men at the Union depot to see
them off and wish the Minneapolis boy success
in his coming fight with Peter Jackson. Car
diff is in excellent health and spirits, and feels
confident of defeating the colored champion.
He now weighs 185 pounds, and will enter the
ring at ISO. They will avoid a long, continuous
journey, and will make several stops along the
route, when Cardiff and Donaldson will appear
as exponents of the Delsartean art. While
confident of winning the prize offered by the
California Club, Cardiff has not underrated
his opponent's abilities, and said:
"lam going out to California to make the
fight of my life. I know I am going to meet a
very clever and experienced boxer, but I will
win just as sure as I will eat my breakfast to
morrow morning." ,. .,
Donaldson took with him a considerable
amount of Minneapolis money to wager ou the
result.

this city, will leave the shooting gallery busi
ness next month. Bonts are too high.
Mattimoke will bever make his mark as a
pitcher, but the day is not far distant when he
will be one of the best hitting outfielders in
the profession.
The Pittsburg club Carrolls sweetly for its
big catcher to come and commence the Hanlon
of Ed Morris' delivery, so as to be used to St be

If the Pittsburg court should succeed in
solving the momentous question. "What is the
LeagueT" thus defining its legal status, the Ball
Players' Brotherhood will doubtless be under

wagons, carriages, buggies, etc, must pay their
license at this office forthwith. All licenses not
paid on or before first Monday in March, 1888,
will be placed in the bands of police officers for
collection, subject to a collection fee of SO
cents, and all persons neglecting to pay on or
before first Monday in May, 1889, will bo sub
ject to a penalty double the amount of the
license, to be recovered before the proper legal
