FORECAST OF GEEAT COMING EVENTS
'A little fact, and at the same time a most
important one, seems to have somehow es
caped the eyes, or rather thoughts, of the
legion of friends of the coming Exposition.
The fact may be called "a little one, be
cause it does not exactly concern the pres
ent; but it is a most vitally important one,
because it concerns the future, and it is
toward the grand future possibilities, nay
probabilities, Of the splendid coming Expo
sition, that the people of the two cities are
gradually learning to turn their thoughts.
'The fact that has called forth so much in
troduction with so little explanation is
simply this: The future sale of life mem
berships, the future voters of the institution,
the future officers of the board and the
future wielders of the -policy of that superb
public educator, an Exposition, must be to
the young .men, for the young men and of
the young men of the present day.
Then it would be a pity that such a great
institution should lie wholly in the power
of the men, when the women are as greatly,
if not even more, interested, since schemes
for their advancement in public affairs are
becoming more and more popular, as their
tind and wise influence become more and
more felt in various ways. For this reason,
and for several other reasons that may not
be perfectly understood at the present day,
but most certainly will

life memberships should, and probably
will, be largely purchased by the young la
dies in the two cities; and for every mem
bership so purchased, the assurance may be
accepted, that one vote for a wise, a broad,
a progressive, and a high policy for the Ex
position managers, will be cast in the mak
ings of the future boards.
The present board has recognized the fact
that the day is coming when the young man
and the young woman of the present dav
will control an institution that presents il
limitable opportunities for the culture, the
"advancement and the actual molding of
the breadth of character of future genera
tions. Recognizing this, there is not a member
of the present board who has not taken one,
two, or even three life memberships (and
as many votes) for their sons or daughters,
providing those gentle reminders of married
life and of growing age are on hands.
Then, while not acknowledging by any
means that they are growing old, and
'hoping and expecting to live for many
years to see the results of their public spirit
and enterprise succeed, even beyond their
expectations, the present members of the
Board will, probably before they are
through, double and even treble the life
memberships in their families.
The young men of the cities are learning
to think, and beginning to see that the
future ot the Exposition lies entirely in the
bands of the present generation of young
men and women, for
THE TIME MUST COME
when the very last membership, as held by
their lathers, must expire with the death of
the holder, and it is wisest and best for all
that they and their sitters should some day
hold the balance oi power.
The reason can easily.be seen. The pres
ent board is perhaps, building wiser than it
knows, JEven though it is looking forward
far into the future, its members cannot see
the end, for the day will come when new in
stitutions, new thoughts,-new facts and new
necessities, -will be tar, far in advance of
their bewildered nineteenth century crasp,
and they must relinquish, lovingly, tender
lv, yet with confidence, an institution that
has tar outgrown them into the hands of the
molders, the makers of the events and the
history of the twentieth century.
Schemes that are now undreamedof will
then be realized. The whirling advance of
time, the infinite progress of thought, of
science, of mechanism, and greatest of all,
education, the pivot around which
revolves all of these, will be too
much for the kindly, good old men,
and they will relinquish their tired
grasp of an institution that has become
uncontrollable, and turn it over to the com
ing generation with a cheerful "We have
done our best, - boys; God bless you."
When that day comes, all glory and honor
will be to th"e Exposition Board that has
passed; all glory and honor to the Exposi
tion Board that has come. "The king is
dead; long live the king!"
A SILTIE TEA SET
Presented to the Foreman of the Westing
house Electric Work.
Mr. P. Nassau, the foreman of the ma
chine department in the "Westinghouse
Electric "Works, received a very pleasant
testimonial of the regard in which he is
.held by his employes in the company, in
the shape of a very magnificent silver tea
service.
It was 12 o'clock on Saturday when Mr.
Nolan, the assistant foreman, in the name
of the men, requested Mr. Nassau's atten
tion for a few moments, and stated:
"On the eve of your departure from our
midst, Mr. Nassau, the boys have bought
this tea service as a present for you, and we
hope that, while you are away from us, you
will not entirely forget that you have still a
large number of friends here."
Mr. Nassau, in spite of his astonishment,
made a very neat and appropriate reply.
The late foreman left last night for New
York City, where he will take charge of the
new factory purchased by Mr. Westing

Justice Gripp looked most sedately se
vere as the above was given out for the text
for the Sabbath morning hearings at Cen
tral. The first member on the programme, 6.
W. Horton, failed to materialize. He had
deposited $5 as a guarantee of good faith,
and as his fine would have been $4 40 for
being drunk, he wisely reasoned that 60
cents was awfully cheap, compared to facing'
the headlight glare of outraged Justice.
T. Griffin had also tried to ward off the
chilly influence of the cold wave by taking
liberal doses of whisky as a counter irritant
The cure was worse than the disease; but
$4 40 patched up the wide breach between
Thomas Griffin drunk and Thomas Griffin
sober. . . .
James Connors was charged with being
a suspicious person. The act that aroused
suspicion in the slow-thinking copper's
mind was seeing the gentleman walk off
with a whole bundle of brooms from a Dia
mond street store. His plea that he in
tended presenting them to General Harrison
in order to help clean out the present adi
ministration, sort of staggered the good Re
publican conrt; but law ignores partylines,
and Connors will have an opportunity to
repeat his fairy tale.
John L- Sullivan was the formidable
name given by a meek and mild-eyed man
who pleaded guilty to following in the
crooked steps of the original John without
the incidental wife beating. He was let
down so easily that he never realized he had
touched the ground until they jarred him
outside the door.
William Desmond hailed from the city of
churches, reigned on Penn avenue for a
while, and was finally snowed under by an
officer who saw him begging. He had a
hard story to tell, and Gripp had learned,
long ago, that misfortune is no crime.
James Eeily owned Carr's saloon for a
while Saturday night, and attracted an ad
miring populace. He became stuck on
himself in thehandsome mirror, and squared
off and countered and declared he "hungered
for a fight When the big police on the
beat loomed ur before him nobody could
coax him to fight "Thirty days in the
workhouse or 13 40," said the Court, and
Reily slunk back through the grating with
his head away over one shoulder.
Samuel Summervilie was drunk, and said
so. The costs were Si 40 or five days to
jail, and he thought a five days' loaf could
not earn 4 40 any other way, and went. He
forgot that when he gesout this busy world
will be just five days ahead of him, while
he will be five days "nearer death.
Thomas Davis was feeling too good for
anything on Washington street He
whooped and he roared, and he yelled and
he bellowed, and he must hustle around
among his friends, if there are any left, to
raise $8 40 by 11 sharp to-day, or the Black
Maria will see he doesn't miss connections
for the workhouse.
TO BE GENEROUSLY OPENED.
A Private and n Public Reception Will be
Given by the Tariff Club.
At a meeting of the Board of Directors of
the Young Mens' Republican Tariff Club,
Saturday, a committee was appointed to
perfect arrangements for the opening of the
new club house, No. Gl Sixth avenue.
Two receptions will be given, one to mem
bers and their friends on the evening of
April 20, and another to the public on the
following evening. Admission tickets and
invitations will be required for the first re
ception, and it is expected that Governor
Bearer, John Dalzell, Congressman Bay
and other notables will be present, they hav
ing signified their desire to attend.
A COMING CONFLICT.

Between Capital and Labor.
Eev. W. N. Webbe, rector of the St
John's Episcopal Church, corner of Forty
seventh and Penn avenue, preached last
evening on the subject of "The Conflict Be
tween Capital and Labor." In his address
he laid down what was the duty of the rich
toward the poor. In his opinion, the gap
between the two classes h constantly in
creasing, and a terrible conflict will some
day ensue between the two classes if closer
relations cannot be brought about.

WASHINGTON'S BIETHDAI TO THINK OP
There isn't so much talk about "open
winters" as there jvas, down to the latter
part of last week. Not that there is less
openness now than there was (for the zero
period has brought little ice and no snow);
but the fact is that people are really satis
fied to call it seasonable weather, and have
no disposition to find fault with the time as
being out of joint, when the mercury gets
down to its cipher in February. However,
the memory is surely of sufficient elasticity
to embrace that not very remote period when
every mouth and every newspaper were full
of comparisons that failed to show up an
other winter so very, very open as this one
had been.
Speaking of open winters, a little chat
with good old Captain William Siebert, of
this city, which a reporter enjoyed a few
days .since, will be found quite apropos.
Venerable Captain Siebert had arisen,
wiped off his spectacles and looked back to
the winter of 1842-3 to see if he couldn't.
find in it plenty of good hard facts with
which to correct the recently recorded state
ment that there was no Ice whatever, but
people picked flowers and berries in that
winter.
"My memory, reinforced by my records,
is very .accurate," said Mr. Siebert, "not
only with regard to the winter of '42-3, buj
as to the exact character of the weather we
had in many of those early seasons, when I
was

at times on the river and the old canal
respectively. That winter found me on the
old packet Pittsburg, and surely we cannot
correctly speak of it as having been a
winter without ice, in view of these facts:
On the morning of November 6, 1842, 1 got
out of my berth aboard the Pittsburg to find
six inches of ice on the surface of the old
canal. Then, I distinctly recollect and
the records I have kept are ample to fortify
my memory that on the 18th of the same
autumn month the river froze over, and re
mained in that condition until the 27th.
Then there were snow and rainstorms
plenty of them to break things up.
"So ycu see. down to the beginning of
the first actual winter month (December),
we had been blessed with enough winter to
satisfy the most fastidious of frigid tastes
and not a very open winter at that But
oh! what weather followed! Through De
cember and January, right up snug to the
opening of February, we had warm snows
and rains enough to have opened any winter.
Then it remained very warm, until Febru
ary 22 (Washington's Birthday),when, as I
well remember, the old Washingtonian
temperance people had planned to have a
great turnout But alas! it snowed at 8 in
the morning; soon developed into a blizzard
(though we only called t -a storm" in those
days), and, by 3 o'clock in the afternoon,
the mercury
HAD GONE BELOW ZBBO.
"I'm not guessing at all this, either, for I
froze one of my legs, and had very good
reason to recollect the occasion.
""Well, you see, this was about the only
ice we had been blessed with that winter
between November 27 and February 22.
But it teas ice; and I can tell you it stayed,
too. I became steward of the old St.
Charles Hotel, and I "know how many in
conveniences we suffered from 'the 'frigid
spell that followed Washington's Birthday
in '43. The ice remained solid until April
10, 'Solid' is a good word to use in this
connection, for Jhe Allegheny river was
frozen clear to the bottom, as you may well
appreciate when I tell you that on the 12th,
when the river broke up, there were great
chunks of ice and gravel six and eight feet
thick thrown up into one of the most dis
turbed streams I ever saw.
"No, no ! It wouldn't do to say that the
winter of '42-3 was such an altogether
'open' season, for it wasn't; or that the
farmers plowed through January, for they
didn't There was too much rain and too
much snow for that.
"I have abundant data to show the ac
curacy of my memory with regard to that
winter. And I might add, by the way, that
was the last year in which Corneel Vander
bilt ran his boat on the old canal here. By
'Corneel' I don't mean the present young
Cornelius, nor the old Commodore, but the
old man's son, Cornelius, a brother of
William H., both of whom are now dead."

Sadden Deaths Thnt Furnish Employment
tor the Coroner.
Patrick Murther, aged 31 years, died at
his boarding house, No. 83 Tustin street,
about 6 o'clock yesterday morning, from
hemorrhage of the lnngs. The deceased
was employed at Moorhead & McCleane's
mill. He came from Alabama about a
month ago. The Coroner will hold an in
quest this morning.
J. B. Murphy, aged 25, a switchman on
the Pennsylvania Railroad at Thirty-third
street, was killed yesterday morning by a
yard shifter. The remains were taken to
Sampson's undertaking rooms, and will be
taken to the home of his parents, at Belle
fonte, this afternoon. The Coroner will
hold an inquest this morning.
John Irvin, a resident of McKeesport,
was found dead on the Baltimore and Ohio
tracks a short distance from the McKees
port depot at 2 o'clock yesterday morning.
There was a hole'in the. back ot his head,
and he had evidently been struck by a
train. The deceased was employed on the
road, and lived at 403 Sheridan street, Mc
Keesport The remains of the tramp who was killed
on the Pittsburg, Chartiers and Yough
iogheny Bailroad on Friday are still lying
at the morgue unidentified. The only thing
upon the body that might lead to identifica
tion was a bricklayers', union emblem, in
scribed "A. A. B.'T
