Pennsylvania Eailroad Abandons the
Experiment for Good.
M ELASTICITY TO A METALLIC BED
TOiile the Inconvenience and Wear and
Tear Are Prominent.
WHI THET SEES! TO SUIT IN ENGLAND
The Pennsylvania Eailroad Company has
given up the experiment of substituting
iron railway crossties for the wooden ties
" now in use. The iron ones in use on the
middle division and in the Philadelphia
yards will be taten up and will probably be
Bent back to England, whence they came.
The iron tics have been in use almost a
year, but, owing to their not having the
elasticity necessary for the "giving" of the
rails, they have not proven a success. An
other reason to prevent their general use is
the cost. As long as wooden ties can be
'purchased at about one-third the cost of
iron ties, the former will continue to be
used. An iron tie cannot be made to weigh
much less than the present wooden tie, or
about 250 pounds.
WHITE OAK PURCHASES.
The Lake Erie road is now buying hun
dreds of carloads of first-class white oak
Virginia ties at the rate of about S3 cents
each. The difference in the cost of the ties
is apparent.
The Pennsylvania Bailroad officials say
the iron tie will never come into use until
all the forests are cleared of their timber
and lumber gets scarce. They say the
wooden tie yields sufficiently to the motion
of the train to make the riding easy and
comfortable. The iron tie will not do this
on a roadbed of broken stone, and makes
the riding hard and unpleasant to the pas
sengers. Xn addition to this the rails are so
rigid that the wear and tear on the locomo
tives and rolling stock is very expensive.
On the English railroads, where the iron ties
are used, the locomotives and cars are con
structed entirely different from those in this
country.
The life of a wooden tic is from 9 to
12 years. "Where the ground is well drained
some of tbe best white oak ties will last
longer than that time.
AVAILABLE EVERYWHERE.
They cost about 50 cents each, and arc made
at nearly every saw mill in the country. It
is estimated that, when put down, packed,
lined, etc., they will cost about 1 10 each.
This includes labor and everything. A
second-class tic will cost about 41 cents de
livered on board the purchasers' cars.
The ties mostly in use are those made of
wbite oat. A. number ot tbe railroad com
panies have tried red oak hut these have
not given satisfaction. Although the wood
is better, there is so much acid in it that it
will corrode and wear a snike out in about
four years. "When the spikes rust they slip
out and very often cause the rails to spread.
This is the cause of a great many railroad
wrecks in this country.
Belore it was decided to abandon the iron
tie, it was suggested that a hard rnbber
cushion be placed under the rail, resting on
the lie proper. This was thought to be too
expensive and will not be resorted to, proba
bly, until it becomes absolutely necessary to
use ties made of irpn.

1IAHAENEKE IN SUSPENSION.
Printed Evidence Id tbe Hand of tbe Board
They Will Ocliberato Friday, or Earlier
An Independent Report.
The full printed testimony "of the
Maharneke trial was put in the hands of
Secretary James Ks Eeed yesterday as
promised.
Mr. Eeed was seen yesterday, and while
he acknowledged that he had all the points
in his mind, yet he refused to say whether
or not he had made up his mind as to the
guilt or innocence of the doctor.
He said his idea was to have a full fleet
ing of the board, and go carefully through
each charge by itself, weighing everything
for and against the charge, and discarding
all else as irrelevant. The former intention
was to go over the entire trial at once, and
thus gather an idea without delay, as to the
guilt or innocence of the accused by the
general weight of testimony. Why this idea
was abandoned was not gfcftn, although he
intimated there was a great deal of irrelevant
talk that would not be considered.
Mr. Eeed also said that he had copies of
the testimony to be furnished to the mem
bers of the State Board of Charities, who
would go over the evidence with their coun
sel and make an entirely separate report to
the legislative committee, although the de
cision, of course, rested only with the board.
He had not vet handed over the evidence to
President Kellv, and did' not know when
the board would meet, as it was subject to
the call of the Presideut
As the regular meeting-occurs Friday in
the penitentiary, he rather thought, but was
not positive, that the evidence would be
gone over then.
A call was also made upon President
Georcf A. Kelly. He had not vet received
the evidence, but said he was as anxious to
have the matter settled as anybody, and
would call the board together as soon as
possible in order that a decision mizht be
reached.
Though neither gentleman ventured even
an approach to an opinion, the idea is grow
ing that Maharneke will be exculpated.
Meanwhile the excitable cause of all this
remains iii suspense in a .double sense, as
Warden Wright's suspension said "until
the result is known."
