THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, TUESDAY, I-EBRUARY 19, 1889. THE LIGHTMG ROD Remains as Mnch an Article of Util ity as it Was Years Ago, BDT 92 FACTORIES DWINDLE TO 4. Consolidation and Eailways Take the Eods Off tlie Conntrj Koads, THOUGH THE OUTrUT IS EK0E5I0US Twenty years ago there were 92 lightning rod lactones in the United States. To-day there are but three, and those doing a tnfllntr busi ness. The lightning rod was the biggest hum bug of the nineteenth century. So says a Chicago paper that ought to know what it is talking about. The quota tion was shown, however, to Mr. Hum, of this city, ahd he remarked: "That man must be a great scientist. Our factory last year sold 40,000,000 feet of rod, and there were 150,000 feet of it retailed here." The topic is one not only of scientific and life and property preserving interest, but it is also of interest as showing the tendency of manufacturing and commercial interests toward consolidation for cheapening cost of products and increasing profits at the ex pense of small capitalists, who mu6t either get out of the way or be squeezed out. It would appear that the impression that the business has petered out is largely caused by the almost entire disappearance of the wagons that once carried the rods through the country. Thirty years ago a person driving through the country would feel as though something were missing if he did not meet a lightning-rod vender. They weie harbingers of summer; but they have as effectually disappeared from view as has the yearly migration of wild pigeons, a feature before the war. It is said the 100 factories or so that 30 years ago gave employment to an army of distributors, have been consolidated until there are but four left; but these can make as much rod as could the 100, and since rail ways have been built within a few miles of every district east of the Mississippi, the army of deliverers has been forced to hunt other employment. The rods are SOW KEIT IN STOCK by the hardware stores, and can be had as readily as a spade or any other agricultural implement in most sections. The fact that the business makes but little show of conse quence in this section is explainable by the now largely diffused knowledge that by the great multiplication of conductors the accu mulation of opposite electricities in quanti ties sufficient to produce destructive dis charges is prevented, and thus it is that houses in cities are rarely struck, or vessels where many are lying together in the docks" Isolated houses are more commonly the oh jects of the lightning stroke. Some years ago a writer, advancing this hvDothesis.argued further that the building ot railways and telegraph lines had so con duced to the multiplication of conductors that the accumulation of opposite electrici ties in quantities sufficient to produce de structive discharges was prevented thereby the fluid being so greatly diffused that its concentration to the extent known in former days was a physical impossibility. It is certain that we have not the fear of lightning that people had 30 years or more ago; and it is nop- familiarity with it that has bred contempt, for it will not allow that feeling to grow. It still refuses to be fooled with as strenuously as in the days when Franklin was making Jiis experiments, and when the French struck a medal in his honor bearing the inscription: Eripuit ccclo fulmen. As the honor of this country is bound np with the lightning rod, itis somewhat rash, in absence of complete proof, to characterize it as "the biggest humbug of the nineteenth century," especially wtten it has received not only the approval y European -as,r well as American scientists, Tiut oi German in surance companies, who HAVE PEOCUBED STATISTICS on the subject which strongly support the opinion that rods offer a great degree of pro tection. Statistics of late years have done much to knock props from under theories. After theologians had spent some thousands of years endeavoring to prove with absolute certainty that polygamy was wrong, by con tending that the births of the sexes was about equal, infidel France munitioned the theological armory by statistics showing all the most ardent anti-polygamist could ask that the male births slightly exceeded the female. The security aflorded by the lightning rod has been more or less recognized for 2,300 years: but the fact that within the memory of man fome people thought it a sin to utilize it, shows what slow progress sci ence formerly made against prejudice. Few. unless raised in the backwoods, can realize that the majority of people 30 years ago recognized thunder as the voice of God, as did the man of TJz., vide., Job, xxxvii. Then this idea was as firmly fixed in the minds of the majority, as was the belief of Greece and Koine that Jupiter pelted the earth with thunderbolts when things were not running to suit him, and the story told of the Pennsylvania Dutchman who had paid money toward the building of a church, but BEFUSED TO CONTBIBUTE for the purpose .of purchasing lightning rods, on the ground that, if the Almighty wanted to burn His own property it was no body's business, simply reflected a arge portion of public opinion at that time. Doubtless there are myriads of grown people in Pittsburg and Allegheny who do not Know that, in 1S55, for a preacher to wear a mdstache was regarded as a sin, by many good people living betweenPittsbnrg and Altoona; but such is the fact, aud some of them had grave doubts as to the morality of allowing the manufacture of labor saving machines, holding that man must earn his bread "in the sweat of his face," or fall under the condemnation of sin. Most of these old fathers and mothers in Israel have gone over Jordan, and if they are still possessed with the same views, and able to keep track of the ways of their descendants, there must be a vast amount of sorrow in that "land that is fairer than this." Perhaps, as someone said lately, thev believe less and hope more" than thev did here, or rather that they see things as they did not here. Meantime, there is enough lightning-rod made each year to girdle the globe, and have enough over to make a submarine cable that would reach across the Atlantic Reputations Made in a Day Are precious scarce. Time tries the worth of a man or a medicine. II os tetter's Stomach Bit ters is a 30 years' growth, -and like those hardy lichens that garnish the crevices of Alaska's rocks, it flourishes perennially. And its repu tation has as firm a base as the rocks them selves. No medicine is more highly regarded as a remedy for fever and ague, bilious re mittent, constipation, liver and kidney dis orders, nervousness and rheumatism. Remornl Sale. There is a heavy freight shipment at' Johnstown for Los Angeles. The amount will reach at least 50 cars, and will be the rails and castings for the Temple street cable road. The office of the Cambria Iron Company is daily besieged with freight agents after the contract Agricultural implements are beginning to move West. The majority ot the manu facturers have large storehouses along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. About this time of the year they fill them up for the spring trade. The railroads from Canton, Akron, Springfield and otherpoints in Ohio, are having a big boom. The de mand for reapers and threshers is better than it has been for years. It is a good sign that the farmers are prosperous and progressive. Plows and implements to break and cultivate the soil are always needed. There are large numbers ot them going to the "Western prairies. The glass trade also is commencing to re vive. Most of the orders are now in, and the manufacturers are busy shipping to the Pacific coast. Agents still complain of the iron and steel industries. The coke ship ments at present, too, are light, and taking everything into account the railroad busi ness is exceedingly dull just now. WORRIED ABOUT HAKRISBURG. A Committee of the Chamber of Commerce to Watch a Railroad Rill. At the Chamber of Commerce meeting yesterday the Legislative Committee recom mended that the coming St. Louis Con vention be notified that they indorsed the Lowell bankruptcy law. Mr. Miller called attention to abill before the Legislature, and thought that railroads should be restricted to privileges enjoyed by citizens. Representative Dravo, of Beaver, said there were adverse influences at work, and the hard work would ie to get the Legisla tive Committee to report on the bill that was to remedy certain evils. A committee was appointed to go to Harrisburg to watch the bill, also the grade crossing bill. The noted long delayed silver brick was placed on exhibition, and the Chamber of Com merce will bid 100 for it when it is put np at auction for the benefit of the cyclone sufferers. Its intrinsic value is about SIS. TO THE INAUGURATION. The Pittsburg and Western Will Ran Trains for Ren's Sake. The Pittsburg and "Western road will also sell excursion tickets to the inauguration. General Passenger Agent Bassett stated yesterday that a special train of Pullman and day coaches will be run through from Akron to "Washington on Saturday evening before the inauguration. The tram will be transferred over the Junction road to the Baltimore and Ohio. A number of people along the Lake Erie road will take that line and the B. & O. to "Washington. The Wrone Rond Mentioned. In alluding, the other day, to some of the primary causes of the Grand Lake Coal Company's failure, a Dispatch reporter understood an informant to say that among the company's first unfortunate ventures was a connection with the Montour Bail road. It should have been attributed to the Shnuestown Road, as the company never had any connection whatever with the Mon tour line. To the O. A. II. Division. B. B. McXeirney, Marshal of the A. O. The famous trial of Maharneke, Hospital Steward of the penitentiary, charged by Convict JlcPhillamy with bribery, cruelty and general corruption, has been finally reduced to black and white by Stenographer E. J. Donnelly and his three lady assist ants. The books, comprising several volumes, with a total of over 600 pages, have been neatly bound in black, and will be duly presented to either Secretary Beed or Presi dent George A. Kelly, of the board, fat noon to-day. The printed testimony shows some pecu liar things, not the least of which is that the testimony of Maharneke, the accused, covers one-fifth ot the total number of pages. This may be because he was so con stantly interrupted by the accuser, by the "board, and by the ladies and their counsel present; but on the other hand, the testimony taken consists of more solid reading, and is less broken up by questions and answers, than nine out often cases that pass through Don nelly's hands. This can be attributed to the wide latitude given witnesses, who were allowed to wander on in their own way, unless something entirely irrelevant was dragged in, when they were brought up with asharp turn. A glance over the sheets indicates that the newspaper reports of the trial were per fectly correct, not an item or "point", having been either misconstrued or mis printed. President Kellv said thattheboard would be able to give a decision within a day or so aftsr the printed material was in their hands. .According to this, then, "Wednes day or Thursday will show the first outcome of that sensational investigation. MRS. M. E. POLLARD. fe5-9G-TU Administratrix C. T. A. TO JOSEPH SLACK AND MARY ANN SLACK, his wife, and all others, the heirs anil legal representatives of Matthew Fielding, late of the conntyof Allegheny, in the Com monwealth of Pennsylvania, deceased. You are hereby notified that John F. Wheless, William S. Riddle and Elizabeth RiddlePayne, plaintiffs, have filed a bill against you and Laurence W. Prophater In the Court of Com mon Pleas No. 1 of Allegheny county, in said Commonwealth, at No. 114 March Term, 1889, the substance whereof is as follows, viz: The said plaintiffs are the owners and are in quiet possession of a piece of land in the First wafd, Citv of Allegheny, Pennsylvania, being lots Nos. 2 and 3 in the plan laid out by Edward Stephens, recorded in Deed bonk vol. 80, page 55, said lots together having a frontage on the northeasterly side of South avenue formerly Bank lane, of 60 feet and a depth of 159 to an alley. Matthew Fielding, about the year 181G, by deed duly executed, conveyed and delivered gossession ot sam premises to iawara w. tephens. The titlo of said Stephens is now duly vested in said plaintiffs. And said Stephens and his vendees and plaintiffs have been since about the year 1816 in notorious, adverse, con tinuous and exclusive possession of said premi ses. Said deed from Fielding cannot be found, and is believed to have been lost. Laurence W. Prophater, ono of the heirs of Matthew Fielding, asserts that plaintiff's title to said premises is invalid, and that he and you are the true owners thereof, and thereby pre vents plaintiffs from selling tho same. And the object of said bill is to obtain from the court a decree that plaintiffs' title to said premises is gi od and valid in law and equity, and to compel you and Laurence W. Propbater to release to plaintiffs all your claims to and interest in said premises as heirs and legal representatives of Matthew Fielding, deceased, if any such inter est you have. And the plaintiffs, having made search for you in Allegheny county, and not being able to find you, made affidavit thereto and presented the same to court. Whereupon tho court have made this order: "And now to wit February 2, 18S9, the fore going affidavit is presented in open court, and upon consideration thereof, it appearing to the Court that Joseph Slack. Mary Ann Slack and all others, tho heirs andlegal representatives of Matthew Fielding, late of the county of Alle gheny in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania deceased, defendants in tbo case, cannot upon diligent search and inquiry be found so as to be personally served -with process, and upon motion of H. and G. C. Burgwin, attorneys for plaintiffs, it is ordered that the said Joseph Slack, Mary Ann Slack and all other?, the heirs and legal representatives of said Matthew Fielding, be notified and required to cause an appearance to be entered for them on or before the first Monday or March, 18S9, to the bill of complaint filed against them in this case, and that a copy of this order and a statement of the substance and object of said bill be published as provided by law iu the Pittsburg Dispatch once a week for three weeks." Note. If yon fail to comply with above di rections by not entering an appearance in the Frotbonotary's office on or before the first Monday of March, 1889, the bill will be taken pro confesso, and a decree made against you in your absence.
