THE (M FIGHT,

IN THE FIKST, FIFTH AND SIXTH
There is Bnch Skirmishing as Has Not Been
Known in Tears.
THE EESULTS OF FACTIONAL FUSSES
As election day draws near, when the
different political factions throughout the
city buckle on their armor, and go out to do
battle with their opponents, the interest
grows more intense. In some of the waids
the hottest local fights ever known will take
place between now and Tuesday night. It
will Dot be a contest between Democrats
and Republicans, but it will be a battle be
tween the present city administration in the
various departments and the McCallin Re
publicans. In a number of the wards candidates for
Select Council have not yet been nominated.
The way a great many of the heretofore
"city crowd" are knifing former associates
and workers would doubly discount the per
formances of the now famous "Jack the
Hipper. A DisrATCH reporter yesterday
tried to get a list of the candidates for
Select Council, but was unable to do so to
completion, owing to the fact that nobody
yet knows who will be nominated in some
few of the wards. A great many of the in
cumbents are candidates for re-election,
while others have concluded not to try their
chances. The following is a list of the can
didates so far nominated.
AS BITTEn AS GALL.
In the First ward Matt Cavanaugh, who
is being supported by Alderman Cassidy, is
having a bitter fight with B. Foley, who is
the regular city Republican candidate. The
Police Department, through Inspector
McAleese, is backing Foley, and every vote
in the ward will be brought out, Cassidy
defies the administration. He says he will
not allow his friends to be driven out of the
ward, and will do everything he can to se
cure Cavanaugh's election.
In the Second ward James Getty, the
present incumbent, is being opposed by
Frank McGinness. The latter is a Demo
crat, and his friends are making a good
fight In the Third ward John Doyle and
George Hohnback, both upholders of the
city administration (exclusive of the Mayor)
are candidates. In the Fourth ward Joseph
Ghescnkamp is running on the Independent
ticket against George Trusch, the present
administration candidate.
In the Fifth, the former "Donnybrook of
election day," there is a four-cornered fight
going on. Mike Price and Fred Heyl,
Magee candidates, Paddy McGee and John
O'Xeil are running. McGee is hustling
after the soldier vote, while O'Neil will
have the Democrats solid. The other Re
publican vote will be split up between
Trice and Heyl, with the chances in favor
of the latter. It is believed by many in the
ward that O'Xeil will have a walkover on
account of the Republican vote being split.
Heyl will get a few Democratic votes on
account of his personal popularity.
Metaphorically speaking, blood will run
in the Sixth ward on election day. There
are only two candidates in the field, but
there are so many different considerations
in the fight that neither one appears to have
any advantage. The candidates are Thomas
McMichael, the Citizens' candidate, and
James Williams, who is backed by the ap
pointees and employes of the city.
EELIGIOJT HAS ENTERED
into the fight, and although neither candi
date has any Catholic proclivities, both are
hustling for the Catholic vote. McMichael
attended the lecture at the Cathedral Sun
day evening last, and his opponents are cii
culating the report that his presence there
was to trr to catch votes. To offset the
rumor, McMichael's friends are also said to
be "working the religious dodge." They
have started the report that "Williams is
going to attend high mass at the Cathedral
Sunday next. By creating this impression,
they expect to take a great many Catholic
votes away from "Williams.
The negro vote in the First precinct of the
ward is being influenced for McMichael. It
is said that Sam Greer, who is the most
popular man in the ward with the nepro, is
working with them, and that they will go
almost Eclid for McMichael. McMichael
will also receive the support of the Demo
crats, who have no candidate. Notwith
standing these odds against him, the friends
of Williams think he will be elected. They
argne that if the administration could elect
Tiny Helmold and Jack Dunn a year ago
to Common Council, when the odds were
greater against them than they are against
Williams, they can certainly elect the latter
now. The drivers and others connected
with the stables of the Department of Public
Works, on Magee street, are out hustling
for Williams. The latter's friends say the
only thing against them is the fact that
Davey Hutchinson is for Williams. As
Davey was never known to be for any other
than the losing candidate in the ward, they
claim he will "Jonah" Williams,
nis viGonocs backing.
In the Seventh ward the chances are said
to he greatly in favor of George Wilson, the
Fifth avenue grocer. He is being opposed
by Joseph J. Marshall, the present incum
bent. It is a. free-for-all; but Wilson has
the endorsement of the administration. In
the Eighth ward John S. Lambie, the pres
ent incumbent, and John Hannan are the
candidates. There is little interest in the
contest there. In the Ninth ward Mart
Brophy, Democrat, who now holds the po
sition, will be opposed by Patrick Hanlin,
a Republican. As this is 'Squire O'Don
nell's war(i, everyone thinks he knows who
will be elected. " In the Tenth ward Bob
Hazlett, the present incumbent, practically
has no opposition.
In the Eleventh H, P. Ford, the present
President of Select Council, will have no
opposition whatever.
In the Twelfth ward, JohnW. Exler.
.Democrat, and Thomas Perry, department
al Republican candidate, are alter the place.
In the Thirteenth ward. T. Holmes Miller,
who now represents this ward, is being op
posed by James Patterson for re-election.
In the Fourteenth ward, a suggestion meet
ing will be held to-night to decide who will
pet the nomination. John M. Anderson, tbe
Itepublican incumbent, is being opposed by
Hugh Fagan, a Democrat L. T. Brown,
who will run as an independent candidate,
is after the place. He is a wU-known
Prohibitionist, and thinks he can catch this
vote.
In the Fifteenth ward J. A. Gillespie is
.after the shoes of Peter Leitz, who is a can
didate for re-election. In the Seventeenth
,ivrard the candidates have not yet been
ominated. In the Eighteenth George
Bendle, the citizens candidate, thinks he
can knock out the present incumbent, Mi
chael Dwyer.
EECOED VS. AMBITION.
In the Nineteenth Samuel Warmcastle,
who has made a record in Councils, is being'
opposed by Mr. Stephensc. Both are Re
publicans. In the Twentieth ward A. F.
Keating, of Zug & Co., will run on the
citizens' ticket against F. W. JIcK.ee, the
i.
present representative. The latter is at the
head of a reformers' ticket
In the Twenty-first ward thereare a num
ber of candidates after the position now held
by H. J. Gross. They are Win. G. Gish,
James Fitzsimmous and James A. Clark.
The latter is talking of running as a citi
zens anti-administration candidate. In the
Twenty-second ward. George A. Houghton,
Secretary of the Americus Club and a
brother-in-law of Mayor McCallin, with
drew from the field, leaving no opposition to
Thomas A. Gillespie. In the Twentv-third
ward the place which is now held ljy Dr.
Evans is wanted bv W. R. Tnstin and Mr.
I Eichley. The doctor il a candidate, how-
i ever, for re-election. In the Twenty-fourth
ward Terrence Heinz, a Republican, is tne
opponent of E. D. 'Mathews, the present
Councilman. Both are Republicans. In
the Twenty-fifth ward Herman Rohrkaste,
the present representative, is being opposed
by Messrs. Janes and Blockinger. The lat
ter is the Democratic candidate.
In the Twenty-seventh ward William
Walls, the pronounced labor leader, is run
ning in opposition to D. P. Evans, the
present representative. The latter's friends
claim that Walls packed the primary meet
ing. On this account, they claim, there is
an open revolt among the Democrats. In
the Twenty-eighth ward Ted Langbecker,
the departmental Republican candidate, is
being opposed by James Dolan, a Demo
cratic reform candidate, and George N.
Monro, the attorney. The latter served
three terms in Council, and is now barked
by a call signed by 163 representative cit
izens. OTHEn SOUTHSIDE WARDS.
In the Twenty-nint ward John Benz, the
Republican candidate, will run against Pe
ter Lauer, the Democratic nominee. In the
Thirtieth ward William Nodden, Demo
crat is being opposed by Dr. McCord, Re
publican departmental candidate. In the
Thirty-first ward W. W. Nesbit, the cit
izens' reform candidate, is trying to knock
out John A. Shook, the present incumbent
In the Thirty-second ward John Paul,
the present Councilman, will have no oppo
sition. In the Thirty-third. John Sullivan,
the Reform-Democratic candidate, who is
the present incumbent, is being opposed by
John Murphy, the Democratic departmental
candidate. In the Thirty-fourth ward, John
Collins, Republican, has no opposition. In
the Thirty-fifth, A. C. Robertson has an
unknown opponent for the nomination.. In
the Thirty-sixth ward, Patrick Foley and
Evan Jones will lock horns. The latter is
a West End glass manufacturer.
There is a strong fight being made in the
Twelfth ward between John W. Driscoll,
Democrat, and William Warner, Republi
can, for the office of Alderman. The pres
ent incumbent, Joseph Nobbs, who was ap
pointed to the position by Governor Beaver,
was defeated for the nomination, but is
going to run on an independent ticket. In
the Tenth ward Alderman Burns, the pres
ent incumbent, will have no opposition for
re-election.
