THE DEFENDANT SMILES AND
The dingy little office of Alderman
Shaefer, on the Southside, was very much
ke a match box yesterday afternoon, for
.ay people, curious and interested ones,
were crowded as closely together iu it as the
lighters in a 5-cent match box, to witness
the hearing of Henry F. Voigt, the ex
cashier of the Farmers and Mechanics'
Hank. The whole afternoon was taken up
with the prosecution offering evidence. It
v&s not until 630 o'clock that the case was
adjourned and Scott Ferguson, Esq., attor
ney for the defense, stated that they -were
not jet ready to offer any evidence. Then
Voigt went back to jail until next Friday
afternoon, when the case will be continued.
As has already been stated in The DIS
PATCH, there are four charges against Mr.
Voigt, viz: First, for false entries in the
books with intent to deceive; second, for
embezzlement; third, for altering the books
with intent to defraud, and, fourth, perjury.
On the first charge Mr. "W. J. Hays, as an
employe of the bank-for five years, identi
fied the various account books, and stated
that Voigt. as a rule, but not always, had
oharge of the individual ledger.
THE EXPERT TESTIFIES.
Then Mr. J. W. Keed, the expert who
has been examining the books during the
last three months, stated he had found a
discrepancy ol $12,000 on October 27 1884,
which had'been caused by several ialse en
tries. He explained ho r that amount had
been drawn out of the bank, and, in order
to have it covered up, entries of alleged
withdrawals, amounting to $12,000, were
made a day or two previous to the time the
books were to be audited. Then, after the
Auditing Committee had found the books
correct, the accounts which were supposed
to have been drawn from the bank were
again entered in the books, credited to
the narties who were supposed to
have drawn the amounts out This pro
ceeding, "the -witness said, hid the fact of
the $12,000 having been taken from the eves
of the Auditing Committee while examining
the bank books. The accounts that had
been tampered with in that way, were al
leged to be those of Klein, Logan & Co.,
tbe .Mononganeia (Sana uompanv, .Louis
Knapp, and S. JiL Clark. They were all
called as witnesses, and they all testified
that no withdrawals or deposits had been
made by them on the dates mentioned in the
bank ledger, except Mr. E. P. Loran, who
could not remember anything about it.
Then came the charge of

'With intent to defraud, and here Mr. Cun
ningham called again upon Mr. Beed to tes
tify. He showed now, from the books, that
he found, in one case, the sum of $3,182 09
had been changed to $182 09, in favor of the
Independent Glass Company, and in an
other case he found that a check for $1,100
had been changed to $100 iu favor of H. F.
Voigt.
In the embezzlement case Mr. Beed stated,
from the books before him, that from April
14, 1884, until September, 1687, he noticed
systematic shortages in the general ledger,
as compared with the check scratcher,
amounting altogether to $159,500. He item
ized 20 different accounts, in which the fig
ures had been changed to such an extent as
to aggregate $10,00 loss to the bank.
Then Mr. Berg was called as a witness,
and he testified that he succeeded Mr. Voigt
as cashier of tbe bank. He stated that upon
an examination he had found that while a
balance or the general ledger showed a de
posit of $100,000 the individual ledger bal
anced at $300,000.
Mr. John McMasters testified to the hand
writing ol Mr. "Voict.
Then the case for'the prosecution closed,
and an adjournment was asked by Mr. Fer
guson. "Yheu a reporter approached Mr.
Voigt and Mr. Ferguson, both gentlemen
seemed to be quite pleased with the result
of the proceedings.
Mr Voigt said: "I am well satisfied,"
and Mr. Ferguson: "They have had their
eav now; but I am going to have my say
next time."
