1 Unusual Interest Attaches to the
-Drawing of a Grand Jury.
A MAGISTERIAL CORONER IS FIRST
To Come Out of the Wheel of Fortune, and
a Murder Juror Third.
OLD STAGERS TO THE FBOXT OXCE MORE
Owing to the attention that has of late
been drawn to our jury system, and especi
ally the grand jury part of it, the members
of the nest grand jury, which was drawn
vestcrday, for the March term of the Crim
inal Court, will be of interest to all, and
especially to taxpayers and those who will
be immediately affected. This interest drew
quite a concourse yesterday to witness the
drawing and learn the kind of material of
which it was lornied. Judges Collier and
Magee were on hand, and Sheriff McCand
lessdrew the names and ex-Sheriff Gray
wrote names and occupations. The draw
ing baa the usual political flavor about it,
some of those present remarking from time
to time, "He's a good Republican and was
a. delegate for me," and sometimes, but more
Mrely, "He's a Democrat;" etc
The first name drawn was that of William
Longhry, Justice of the Peace and Deputy
Coroner, Coraopolis borough. This name
attracted attention at once, as the Coroner
was standing on the opposite side of the table,
and when the name of the sixth
was called. William E. Howell,
clerk, Fourteenth ward, Commissioner
Ennis remarked, "He and Loughry
served on the grand jury two years ago."
This was the body that sat for a large por
tion ot that year. It being on an extra
ordinarv length of time. The next com
ment that attracted attention was made
when the name of M. E. Hargraves, cigar
maker, of South Fayette township, was
drawn. It was remarked that he sat last
.week on the jury that convicted Joe Dim
ming of murder. The rest of the draw ran
this way:
fe Sax Mart Seventh ward; Lucas Christ,
laborer, Sixteenth ward; George Bindle. coal
dealer. Eighteenth ward; Georee C. Smith,
fletcner. Twenty-ninth ward: A. J. Lee, gentle
man, Verona; Harvey Marshall, boiler mker.
First ward, Allegheny City; John Flchter,
lire department. Thirteenth ward, Alle
gheny Citv: John Spencer, carpenter,
Verona: Graham Scott, real estate
agent. Fourteenth ward: Jacob Knoeddler,
farmer, Jefferson township; William Nichel,
barber. Third ward; Charles Herle, feed store,
Sixteenth ward; Joseph Diebold.grocer,Twenty
ninth ward; Bernard Moore, laborer. Thirty
second ward; Matthew Williams, gentleman,
Sixteenth ward: Fmley Torrens. real estate
agent. Twenty-first ward; James L. Espey,
farmer.Upper St. Clair tnwnshin; James Lynch,
driver. Third ward; Joseph " Lowry, roller.
Sharpsburp: Geo. Printer, laborer. Seventeenth
ward: William Hines, driver. Seventeenth
ward.
Of the prizes Pittsburg drew more than
half, Allegheny was put off scantly and
there are two gentlemen of Verona.
Press and people are not alone in watch
ing with interest this jury business; but the
judicial eye has been largely opened, as in
dicated by a remark made by Judge Collier
at the Press Club banquet. Speaking of
the right to give widest publicity to what
the courts are doing, he added: "And the
people, through the press, have equally a
right to know just what their juries are
doing."

The alnmui of the Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute of Troy will, as before announced,
bold their annnal reunion in Pittsburg to

headquarters at the Monongahela House
The reunion is for purely social purposes
and they will spend the time in visiting the
mills in and about the city.- At 9:30 this
morning they will go to Tarentum to seethe
plate glass works. Returning over the
Vallev road, they will spend the balance of
the day visiting the mills along Peun
avenue," winding up in the Westinghonse
works.
On Friday they will inspect the mills and
glass factories on the Southside, the Edgar
Thomson at Braddock and the tube works
at McKeesport. The reunion will end with
a grand banquet at the Monongahela House
to-morrow evening.
Many of the engineers arrived last even
ing, and about 150 visitors are expected.
They will be the guests of the Pittsburg
Alumni Association. Among the visitors

DOWK TO HARD PAN.
Rallrondt No Looser Rushed, bat Now
Sorely In Need orTrafflc
It is either feast or famine with the rail
roads. At present it is all famine, with a
little feast in sight. W. L. Sproull, com
mercial agent of the Chicago and Alton,
yesterday said on this subject:
I spent last week in Ohio, and I must say tbat
1 never saw things so dull. I didn't get any
business, and I couldn't see that anybody else
did. There is no freight moving.
Men are working, but doing very little ship
ping. I expect there will be a rush of agri
cultural implements to the West in the coarse
of a month. This will bring up the tonnage,
and the rash will probably last CO days.
There is one satisfactory feature in the
present depressed state of affairs; the roads
are maintaining rates. It is a case of must,
strongly emphasized. Bankers and stockholders
have given managers to understand that it Is
dividends they want, as well as a big tonnage.
D'cCren Denies It.
The latest railroad rumor is that the
Pennsylvania Company is trying to secure
an interest in the C. B. & Z., the Union
Pacific and Central Pacific roads, and thus
establish a through line to the Pacific.
Manager McCrea and other officials deny
it.
Two Orphan Boys.
Paul and Lloyd Rodgers, two orphan
boys, applied to Superintendent of Police
Weir yesterday for passage to Kansas City.
They told a pi table tale, which was verified.
Passes as far as Chicago were procured for
them. One of the boys was au expert cor
netisL Mourning Their Crown Prince.
The handsome Austrian flag is displayed
at half-mast from the windows of the
Foreign Consul, on Smithfield street, in de
ference to the deep grief felt by their people
over the sudden death of young Crown
Prince Rudolf.
Is Palling no Wires.
It is denied by membersof Company D.
Eighteenth Regiment, that Lieutenant Har
vey ever used undue influence to secure the
position of Captain, also that he told them
to Tote as they pleased.
That Four-Story Warehouse.
The four-story warehouse at Liberty and
Cecil alley belongs to the heirs of John
Hern and not to S. Gormley, as stated in
the Fourth ward assessments.
Sans Everything.
Poor Jacob Gran, aged 70 years, was sent
to the Poor Farm yesterday to end his days
there. He has no money, no relatives and
no friends, and has even lost his mind.
A Singular Form of Itlonomnnia.
There is a class of people, rational enongh in
other respects, who are certainly monomaniacs
in dosing themselves. They are constantly try
ing experiments upon tbelr stomachs, their
bowels, their livers and their kidneys with
trashy nostrums. When these organs are
really out of order. If they would only use
Hostetter's Stomach Bitters, they would, if not
hopelessly insane, perceive its superiority.!
