i?OR FflENCH FLATS.
Purchase of a Stockton Ave., Alle
gheny, Lot for an Experiment
FIRST BIG APARTMENT HOUSE,
And A'ot a Theater, to be Constructed Ij
the Purchasers.
A SIX-FLAT STEUCTOKE CONTEMPLATED
C. H. Love yesterday sold the property of
the Tiernan heirs on Stockton avenue, Alle
gheny City, 70x240 feet, with an old resi
dence building, for 530,000 to D. T. "Wat
son, Esq., and K. 2T. Head. The price paid
is for the ground, as the bnildings are not
considered worth anything as an invest
ment The sale is of more than ordinary inter
est, from the fact that Fred Parke and other
gentlemen have been for some time engaged
in the consideration of its eligibility for a
site for a theater tor our Xorthside neigh
bors. It is also stated that, since the sale
was consummated, Mr. Parke, or someone
supposed to be similarly interested, had
offered an option to hold the property for a
time at $35,000.
Mr. Love said he did not feel at liberty to
state what intention the purchasers had,
but it is conjectured elsewhere, and in fact
there are people who say it is not a conjec
ture, but a crystalized fact, that Messrs.
"Watson and Head intend to build an apart
ment house, comprised ot a number
of flats for rent, to be built after
the most approved style in' vogue in
the Eastern cities. "Whether or not they
intend to have a culinary department at
tached, which will take the burdens of the
kitchen off tenants, was not ascertained; but
it was suggested that the communal idea in
this respect might be entertained. The in
tention is said to be to put up a building
six stories or more in height, and it is
thought a co-operative cooking project may
alo be in view.
Attention has been called in the past to
the advantages poor people might gam were
they to band together and employ a pur
chasing agent on salary to buy food for
them. They could pay him a liberal salary
and then feed themselves S3 per cent cheap
er and much better than they can under
present methods of purchasing. For in
stance, a barrel of onions can be bought on
Liberty street to-day for 51 40, while a bushel
bought in a small way costs 51 GO.
It is estimated by some that if a co-operative
and scientific cook, who knew how to
utilize odds and ends, were employed by a
number of families they could secure better
food at a rate that would not only save the
expense of servants but the cares of the mis
tress of the household, allowing her time to
get acquainted with the babies in the few
intervals which life in society allows her.
Stockton avenue enjoys the reputation of
being the best adapted location for boarding
houses in the two cities.
ADAM SLATER'S BLOOD
Is Traced to the Hands of Thomas Hol
loway by the Coroner's Jury.
The oloody butcher knife with which
Thomas Holloway is alleged to have almost
decapitated Adam Slater at the Gould
boarding house in Cork's Run, Saturday
night, was produced in evidence and fully
identified at the Coroner's inquest yesterday
morning. "Walter Green, James Gould,
Mrs. Mary Gould, Constable Klislium,
James Atkinson, Joseph Hollison, John
Cochrane, James Nicholson, Chris. Stein
miller, Dr. T. E. Miller and Charles Black
burn were the witnesses, and they detailed
the various phases of the tragic story as
heretofore published.
They agreed thatHolIoway had explained
his bloody deed by saying: "'Adam asked
me to do it." There could be no possible
doubt as to the character of the occurrence,
though some of the witnesses were doubtful
as to Holloway's alleged drunkenness at the
time. On the following verdict Coroner
McDowell committed Holloway for murder
in the first degree:
Adam Slater, aged about 45 years, came to his
death at the residence ot James Gould, Char
tiers township, Sunday, January 20. 1S9, about
12.-09 A. M., from hemorrhage of the neck aud
facial arteries, due to his throat having been
cut. From all the evidence the jury finds that
such cutting was done with a butcher knife in
the hands of one Thomas Holloway in the
dminc room of said house about 11:50 P. M.,
featurday night, January 19, 1S89, with felonious
intent

It Was the Other Fellow.
James Henna, contractor and builder,
called at this office yesterday to say that he
wasn't the same Kenna who was arrested
for larceny. He said it was rather embar

Select Counclf Passes an Ordinance That No
Infected Body be Taken Into Cfanrch,
Chapel or Hall.
"With Mr. A. C. Robertson in the chair,
Select Council met yesterday, went Into a
committee of the whole, and at once took
up the discussion of the ordinance offered at
last meeting relative to the disposition of
persons dying from infectious diseases.
Section 6, relative to the transfer of
bodies, was approved with a slight amend
ment. Section 7, providing for fumigation;
section 8, for the penalty of violation, and
section 9, for instituting suits, were ap
proved. , .
Dr. Grimes offered as a substitute for
section 4 that infected bodies be not al
lowed in any church, chapel or public hall
without a special permit. Mr. Sullivan said
it was an outrage, as it deprived men of
their religion and Catholics of their last
rites and a man who asked for mass with
his last breath would be deprived of it by
this section.
Mr. Lambie said it was not the intention
to deprive any of their religiousservices,
j-et there was a respect to the living aside
of respect for the dead. The Catholic
Church would not allow the corpse of a
smallpox or yellow fever patient in the
church, vet Dr. Daly had said diphtheria
and scarlet fever were equally dangerous.
Mr. Sullivan had acted on the advice of
Father McTighe, and there were reasons in
the Catholic Church when mass could not
be said without the body.
A vote was taken and the substitute
adopted, and Mr. Sullivan wanted a call of
the house, but was ruled out because a
question ot that kind could not be raised in
a committee of the whole. Mr. Robertson's
motion to reconsider section 5 was adopted,
and the committee arose.
Mr. Sullivan reported to Council, and
Mr. Sullivan moved to lay the ordinance on
the table, which was lost, as follows:
Ayes Messrs. Barrett, Dwyer, Epping Haslett,
O'Toole, Sullivan and Wllllams-7.
Noes Messrs. Getty. Grimes Gross, Eatable,
Marshall, Paul, Kobertson, Rohrkaste, Schulz,
bchuck, Smith, Sorg and President Ford 13.
The ordinance was laid over for printing,
and that providing for more effectual pro
tection ot the public health was postponed
for further action.
