TKE? PITTSBURG - DISPATCH, "MONDAT, JANUARY 21 1889: X .SOCIALISTIC WANTS. A Pittsburg Inception of the First Body of Its Kind Hereabouts. KO PRESIDENT, VICE OK SENATE Would be Tolerated in Their Constitution, Nor Any Capitalists, IT -THE GOVERNMENT MUST BE BOSS An American branch of the Socialistic Labor party of Great Britain was organized yesterday on the Southside. The meeting took place at Odd Fellow's Hall, in the rooms of the German Socialistic Labor Society. This is the first branch of the organization in "Western Pennsylvania, and it is a direct result of the socialistic speeches and agitation of Prof. J. Hamil ton Garside. "When that gentleman was in Pittsburg, a few weeks ago, he made several speeches on the Southside in the interest of the Socialistic party. He succeeded in obtaining the promise of several working- men -to start an organization. Yesterday afternoon the meeting was but poorly attended, owing to the bad weather; but those who were there signed their names as members. A motion to adjourn until the first Sunday in February was then made, on which day the election of officers will take place. All the members of the organization were anxious to have it understood that they were not to be confounded with the Anarch ists, in whose theories and methods they do not believe. But they demand a good many things, whose introduction would radically chance the Constitution and the statutes of the United States. They believe in the per fect system of co-operative production, and demand that the workers obtain the undi vided product of their toil. They want the United States to obtain possession of the railroads, canals, tele graphs, telephones and all means of transportation. They demand compulsory public education of all children under 14 years of age; the instruction to be in the hands of the United States. They demand also the abolition of the Presidency, Vice Presidency and Senate of the United States; an Executive Board to be established, whose members are to be elected by the House of Representatives. They demand universal and equal rights of suffrage, without regard 10 color, creed or sex, and uniform laws for all the States. FATHER CANEVIN'S LECTURE. A Temperance Meeting, With ninny Pledges, nt the Cathedral. Father Canevin, who distinguished him self for his bravery and acts of kindness at the Diamond and "Wood streets disaster, de livered an eloquent temperance lecture last evening to the congregation of St. Paul's Cathedral. Notwithstanding the inclement weather the church was packed. I Father Canevin reviewed the reform work done and the attitude of the Catholic Church toward the evil of drinking intoxicating Leverages. He said they had always been foremost in promoting temperance among the Catholic people, and the warfare against liquor was to be waged with unrelenting vigor. He made no reference whatever to the prohibition amendment. He said that mod erate tipplers were about the worst of drink ers. Drinking alcoholic liquors in modera tion he found to be productive of much drnnkenness, and he proposed total absti nence. At the conclusion of the lecture he asked his hearers to make a silent pledge that they would abstain from the use of liquors for a t specified time. He said he knew the deli ' cacy of feeling with which a person stood up, and the moral courage it required to show others that the person acknowledged the drinking habit, and wanted to reform. In view of this, he asked all those wished to sign the pledge to repeat it to themselves, after him. He then recited the Catholic pledge, and it is calculated that about 500 of his hearers repeated it after him. The whole congrega tion knelt during the recital of the pledge. FVFRY FlAV ihe results of a county can i VL.li I Urn I tWJ on Prohibition pros pects will appear in The Dispatcil Every citizen who would keep pace with future de velopments connected with this vital issue ihould read THE DISPATCH.
