Eclipses, like misfortunes, never come
singly, and a darkening of the tun is almost
always followed by an obscuring of the moon
after an interval of about 15 days.
The earth generally' obscures her fair
sister but partially by getting between her
and the sun, and this is the case on the
16tb, when but a portion of the moon will
pass through the shadow.
A schedule of the lady's movements is
given as follows: Moon enters penumbra
January 16, at 937 r. M.; enters umbra at
lOiSi P. M.; middle of eclipse, 00.29 a. m.;
leaves umbra 2 A. m., and smiles again
serenely at 3:21A.M.
The moon's entrance into the penumbra
trill scarcely be noticed at the time given,
but at 11 o'clock it will distinctly be seen.
Even in a total eclipse the body of the
moon is illuminated by a lurid, reddish
light which reaches the moon by reflection
from the earth's atmosphere. "When the
moon is partially obscured, this reddish
light is visible, but very faint. At the
darkest portion of this eclipse, the moon
will have seven-tenths of her face hidden.
Eclipses are always ot more or less s-cientific
use, although the'benefits derived from an
eclipse of the moon cannot be compared to
those accruing from a sun eclipse on account
of the latter being such an unknown quan
tity, comparatively speaking.

of Mercy's Church, last night said he was
glad that so many people were in the
church, and even in the hallway and on the
steps, he spoke of a very evident fact, for
the edifice at the corner of Third avenue
and Ferry street was packed.
The fact that Father Lambing was the
pastor of that congregation years ago had
brought a great many of his old friends to
the church to hear him. He commenced
his discussion with the words of Job, saying
that life is a continued warfare between
right and wrong, good and evil. Defining
evil, he spoke of the passions of mankind,
and while he characterized impurity as the
greatest evil, he regarded intemperance as
the one which can be most effectively com
bated by law or other means. In describ
ing the combat, he called attention to the
enemies and friends of temperance, and con
'cluded by illustrating to his audience the
iglorious " result which would inevitably
follow, because it was a fight pleasant in
the sight of God, and hence sure to be suc
cessful. At the close a very large number of the
congregation took the pledge. A collection
was also made for the benefit of Father
Lambmg's congregation in "Wilkinsburg,
who contemplate the rebuilding of their
church, which burned down only three
weeks ago.
HARRISON AND MORTON.
They Will be Officially Elected by the Na
tional College To-Day.
Harry S. Paul, President of the Ameri
cus Club, and George Shiras. Jr., both of
whom are Republican Presidental electors,
left last night for Harrisburg to attend the
meeting of the Electoral College at that
place to-day.
Although Harrison and Morton were
elected by a popular vote some months ago,
yet their election will not be official until
the College meets. The members will as
semble and cast their ballots.
After the 30 votes are counted the result
will be announced and the ballots put in a
sealed envelope. One of the members will
then be appointed to carry the .ballots to the
department at Washington, where the result
will be officially announced, as 'also from
other States that go through the formula, r"
MAUGHER RESIGNS.
The Well-Known Hotel Manager Leaves
the Albemarle House.
W. E. Maugher, Manager of the Albe
marle Hotel and formerly chief clerk at the
Seventh Avenue Hotel in this city, has re
signed his position at the former house. He
isconsidering several offers from good hotels
in different parts of the State, and will
probably accept one near Pittsburg. He
will be" succeeded at the Albemarle by
Samuel Hayden, formerly manager of the
hotel:

The contract -will contain stipulations by which
the City of St. Louis may acquire tbe entire elec
tric plant and appurtenances at tbe expiration of
the contract.
Bidders must submit with proposals, general
and detailed plans and specifications of tbe pro
posed system of distributing the electricity, mode
of supporting the lights and wires, and of safety
appliances.
Proposals must be made on blank forms and In
closed In envelopes furnished by the Board of
Public Improvements. The certificate of the
Treasurer of tbe City of bt. Louis that the sum of
(3,000 has been deposited In tho treasury must be
inclosed with the proposal.
The right to reject any or all proposals is ex
pressly reserved.
Specifications, form of contract and plans of the
districts to be lighted, may be seen at tbe office of
the President of the Board of Public Improve
ments of the City of St. Louis, on and after Janu
ary 28, 1889.
Any contract let hereunder will require the ap
proval of the Municipal Assembly by ordinance.
