TJnion is about to make a new departure to
reach voters, and place before them the mat
ter of prohibitory Constitutional amendment
The women propose to carry the work into
the public schools, and through the children
reach the fathers.
Yesterday afternoon an "amendment prayer
meeting" of the Union was held at their
headquarters, Ko. 534 Smithfield street.
Owing to insufficient notice the attendance
was net as large as it would otherwise hare
been. Among those who were pres
ent were Mrs. Dr. Swift and
Mrs. J. S. Collins, two of the original band
of "crusaders," who were arrested and
locked up in the Central station for carry
ing on the temperance work in front of
saloons in 1872.
The meeting was opened by Mrs. Dr.
Swift, who stated flie object of the gathcr
ini Her remarks were to the effect that
prayers would be needed to guide the people
so they would see the necessity of voting for
the amendment.
TEMPEKANCE IX THE SCHOOLS.
After the reading of the Scriptures and a
prayer bv Mrs. Swift, Mrs. J. Ellen Foster
offered a" prayer. She spoke in a pathetie
manner of yesterday's disaster, and ex
pressed pity for the families of the men who
were killed.
Mrs. Monroe, a State Prohibition lecturer,
whoquictlv came into the room, surprised
the ladies, who did not know she was in the
city. Mrs. Monroe spoke of the work she
was doing among the schools and particu
larly amongthe teachers' institutes through
out the State, She calls her method ''scien
tific teaching," and illustrated a number of
cases where it had met with good results.
At the conclusion of her remarks, Mrs.
Swift spoke of the necessity of baring Mrs.
Monroe lecture before the Teachers' Institute
of Allegheny County. Mrs. Foster told
how the teachers in Iowa presented the
liquor question to the children, who in turn
talked about the matter to their parents.
In this way the Toters in the family were
made to see the issue, and when the time
came they Toted the Prohibition ticket
She advised the women to be courageous,
and even if they were counted out at the
polls, they would achieve a victory.
COUNTED OUT.
When asked what she meant by "being
counted out," she said: "If they did not get
enough votes." She stated they had hun
dreds of men who would promise to vote for
the amendment, but when the time came
they would stay at home and let somebody
else do the voting.
Mrs. Monroe wanted to put a copy of
Julia Coleman's catechism on alcoholic ex
periments in the hands of every teacher in
the public schools of Allegheny county, and
let them teach the catechism to the children.
It would be necessary for the union to bring
their social influence to bear upon the
teachers to get them interested in the work.
Mrs. Collins spoke of how the crusaders
were dragged through the streets and put
into cells alongside drunken men in 1872.
Among other ladies present was Mrs.
Ella Watson, State Secretary of the union.

boardwalk be constructed on the west side of
Beltzhoover avenue, commencing at Fifth
street and ending at Eighth street, in the said
borough nf Beltzhoover, to be constructed as
follows: That said boardwalk shall be four feet
in width, to have three string pieces run
ning parallel with said street; said string pieces
to be four-by-four inches, to be of Dine laid on
pine cross ties, not less than four-hy-four
inches thick, spaced eight feet from center to
center, and each cross tie to bo placed on lo
cust posts: the cap boards to run at right an
gles with the string pieces, and to bo one inch
in thickness, spaced one-fourth of an inch
apart; that all lumber used in tbe construction
nf said boardwalk to be pine, free of all imper
fections, the ontside stringers to be placed
three inches from outer edge of cap boards,
and the other string piece to be in center of
cross ties; said boardwalk to be three feet
from curb, as per borough ordinance No. 5,
section 4.
Sec. 2. That any ordinance or part of an or
dinance conflicting with the provisions of this
ordinance be and tbe same is hereby repealed
so far as the same affects this ordinance.
