"' s ; "3 HOT A DOUBLE TRACK President John Newell Dispels an Illusion on the P. & L. E. IT OWES $1,000,000 AT PRESENT, And Won't Undertake a Km Depot or Costly Improvements. AN OBDER FOE 500 KW CARS IS OUT An important special meeting of the di rectors of the Pittsburg and Lake Erie Bail road was held at the company's offices yes terday. President John Newell and J. T. Harahan, the new Assistant General Man ager of the Lake Shore, were present After the meeting President Newell said to a reporter: "The meeting to-day was pre liminary to the annual meeting of the shareholders, to be held on the 22d. The directors declared the usual semi-annual dividend of 3 per cent, and ordered 500 new gondola cars. These cars will be built by Western firms; but I don't know now who they will be. A few days ago we ordered 1,000 tons of rails from the Edgar Thomson. "The resolution to Increase the bonded stock of the co"mpany will be submitted to the share holders on the 22d. The increase asked for will be about SI. 000, 000. ENTIRELY EEBOXEOUS. The impression has gotten abroad that this money is intended to double-track the road and make numerous improvements. This is not so. The Lake Erie owes debts to the amount of l,000,000or more, and the object to be gained in increasing the stock is to fund the debt. We want to provide for this debt as soon as possi ble. I can't tell what the stockholders will do with the resolution. , IT'It is all nonsense to talk about double tracking the road this vear. Wo are not going to make a splurge. We will probably bulsi four or five miles of sidings, as we have done in past) ears; but the road can't afford to lay anv more tracks. "So depot will be built, either. The present one is good enouch. The fact is. no extensive improvements are contemplated at present The road receives its share of business: but the debt must be paid before anything further is done. I think the outlook for the railroads is good. The crops last year were heavy, and the large quantities of grain will have to be carried East. This will bring MONEY TO THE FAEMEES, and they will want new machines and farm im plements. Here the iron and steel men will come in for their share, and that will boom these industries. "As to rate wars, the roads this side of Chi cago never had had any trouble in this respect. The lines west of Chicago have been squab bling more or less; but they have signed an agreement in dead earnest to maintain rates, and the i-hanccs are they wilL "Concerning the Peinikey we are prepared to take away all the coal the operators can give us. The stockholders will elect the Vice Pres ident. I don't know who he will be." It is abont settled that Herbert Hostetter will succeed h:s father as Vice President, if he will accept the position. If he doesn't want It, Mr. Bailey will be the man. This seems to be the opinion of railroad men in general. AN UGLY MONKEY. Engine Company 7 Presented With a Pet by One of the Firemen. William Bessnecker, of engine company No. 7, Allegheny, has presented the com pany with a monkey. The animal is named "Eureka," and it is already a pet. Mr. Bess necker got it on a hunting trip in the moun tains. C. L. MAGEB THANKED. The Firemen Acknowledge His Donation of $1,000 to Their Fond. At the meeting of the Firemen's Beneficial Association yesterday Assistant Superin tendent Steele presented a resolution thanking Mr.CL Magee for his donation of 1,000 to the disability fund of the association. It was adopted. Our. men's furnishing depaitment open until 3 o'clock to-night. Come and see the big mark down in pure wool underwear, all sizes; also a new line of very fancy styles of new neckwear at 50 cents.
