New York, April 20.—~The New York
Commandery Naval and Military Or
der of the Epanish-American War held
its annual meeting last night at Del
monicos. General J. W. Clous, U. 8
A., presided President Roosevelt
was reelected commander of the com:
mandery. The order Is founded on
the lines of the Loyal Legion, and only
those who hold or have held commis
sions In the army or navy are eligible
to membership. President Roosevelt
sent his best wishes for the welfare of
the organization,
Oleo Bill Goes to President.
Washington, April 20. After a brief
discussion yesterday the senate agreed
to the house amendments to the oleo
bill as passed by the senate. The
measure now goes to the president
for his signature. An effort was made
by Mr. Teller, of Colorado, to amend
the measure, so as to levy a tax of 10
per cent. of the capital or assets of
any butter trust that might be formed,
but It was defeated.
Constabulary Ambushed,
Manila, April 20 Five men of the
constabulary have been ambushed at
San Juan Delmonte, near Manila. One
of the party was killed and one was
wounded. The Filipino band consist:
ed of 30 Ladrones, well armed, nearly
all of them carrying Mauser rifles, A
force of constabulary is scouring the
neighborhood for the bandits.

Murdered During Church Services.
Hazleton, Pa April 28 Michael |
Cherko was murdered about 100 feet
from the Greek Catholie church at
Freeland yesterday morning during
the progress of the Greek Easter ser
vices. George Smith Is under arrest,
charged with having committed the |
erime. It is alleged that Smith, upon
entering the church, falled to remove
his hat, and when requested to do so
by Cherko, one of the trustees, drew |
a black jack and assaulted Cherko
The latter ran out the door, followed |
by 8mith. Cherko had not gone far
when Smith, drawing a revolver, shot
him through the back, death being in
stantaneous. Friends of the dead man
overpowered Smith and took him to
the station house. The servicos came
to an abrupt end amid great excite

Pittsburg, April 20. --An exact do

built at Economy by the American
Pridge Company will be erected at
Chicago at a cost of between $2.5600.
000 and $3,000,000. This decision was
recently reached by the directors of
the United States Steel Corporation,
and will be one of the results of the
pending bond issue of $50,600,000. The
works will have an annoal capacity of
from 150,000 to 200.000 tons and will
give employment to about 5,000 men
