THE SUNDAY SCHOOL. Frm tli# N#w York Obwrtw. INTERNATIONAL LEBBO NB. IT! HIV. HISSI M.UROCT, . 11. MAVII — Victory over Death.— 1 Cor. 15:50-58. GOLDEN TEXT.,— Death i| swallowed up n iotory.— 1 Cor. 15:54. The main purpose of this chapter, which has been called the crowning glory of the Epistle, was to confirm the Corinthian Christians in the sub lime and inspiring truth of the resur rection of the dead. Doubt* of thia seem to hare crept into tne church. It is not certain thxt any were ready to qu -stion all future distance. Hut the pagan atmosphere about them was full of unbelief in any renewed bodily life for the dead. At best the common heathen thought was that the dead sur rived only aa ghostly shadows, spirits unclothed, with no corporeal habili ment, or bouse from heaven, and so living but half a life. It was to meet the rising tendency to question, or let go, the hope of a glorious, complete, embodied immortal life, that this chap ir was written. The first part of tho chapter is de voted to the fact of the resurrection, and the second to its mode. Our present concern is with the last cijftt verse*. What are the chief things of which we are here told ? 1. A second and better paradise (50). — Two terms are used to designate and partially descr.be it: "the kingdom Of God,' and ''incorrtiptlon." The phrase ''the kingdom of God" is sometimes applied to the new order of thing" Christ set up in this worid. In other places, as h.-r- it points to the per fected stale of holiness and glory in heaven. To the dying thief who pray ed, ''Lord remember me when thou earnest into thy kingdom," Jesus answer ed, to-day shaltthou be with me in para. due." This kingdom is called "incor ruption" for the reason that naught in it will be subject to decay. Flesh and blood," our bodies as they now are. can never share its glories. It is an "in heritance incorruptible, undefiled and fadeless." Where that heavenly realm will be found to he, is not told us. Some have thought this earth, purified and re newed. will he its scene : others think the Scriptures point to some other Iwxly or bodies In space. Plainly it is a place. "I go t > prepare a place for you." Note that word "inherit." It poir,ts to heirship. The inheritance will fall to "heirs of God. and joint heirs with Christ." t 2. A Promised char,.;/ to prepare us f r it (51-53) —Here in thi" world our bodies ire subject to corruption, di-honor and wevkness: to disease, humiliation and decay. Immortality, glory and power will mark all who have (dace in the in corruptible kingdom. How then can any of us hare a plvre in it ? The ana wer is : "We shall all he change')." Note that the Apostle i- hre speak ing of the resurrection of lei. ers. Then note that the chang, spoken of it in the body, not in the- spirit. It is mortality which i* put otr: immortality which :a put on. Of the time when this SIIAII be, it is only *a d that it shall he "at the last trump." The word trump is used he cause in war gnals w. re given l.y means o f a trump>et. There will ho some sig Dnl then, some gr< it demonstration, possibly some physical phenomena, to mark the opening of the last grand events. Then "the Ira I shall he raised incorruptible, and w. shall he. hanged.'• That is, not only -ball tho-e who have lived and passed to ha with Chrit, hut all who may be still living on the earth when the day ariivce—all shall be changed. Thus the "we" includes all believers of all gem rations. I he reason for the change hae already been indicated. It i- that the clothing of the soul, its habit, lion, may he such a* shall befit the new and more glorious state, and suited to the occupations to engage us there. We are to remember thai the heavenly paradise is a real world, with more that is outwasd sfid lubstAntial than is sometimes imagined. The bodies will be real bodies : apiri'uil not in the sense that they are immater id, bul in thesense that they are suited to the Spirit's need-, to the functions and enjoyment of the future state. Ho clothed, the glorified saints shall I* "swift as angels, strong as cherubs, ar dent as seraphs, glorious ss Christ." The beat idea of what the spiritual body will tie may be derived from what is told us of the body of the risen Saviour for ours shall be changed "into the like news of bis." Note thai all this is a mystery" (51), We know it because it is revealed, and just so much of it as is revealed. 3. The eompleU vwtory thus roneum misted (51,55). —Then shall be brought to pass the saying : Death ia swallowed up in victory." Ilia captives are wrested fr- in him ; he ia j< lie I of bis con' - * sis. Note the reading of the fifiy-llfili verse in the Revised Version 5 "O, death, where is thy victory ? 0 death, where is thy slitig Death is represented as an animal with a piercing sting, or foe armed with a dart. Hut whatever death lias been able to do against us, is now undon and fur more than un done, The believer has come forth in to a far more glorious life. Our present sicknesses, and weakness, and pains, are all parta of death, its process going on. Hut in the new paradise, we shall not only l>e freed from all thess, nut we shall have bodies far more beautiful, and suited to a glorious state, than we had ever before sin and death had be gun their work. "It doth not yet ap pear what we shall be, but we know that when Christ shall appear we shall be like him." 4 lty wham the victory is gained (56, 57) —lt is the gift of God "through our I/ord Jesus Christ." Of the believe, he himself more than once declared "1 will raise liim up at the last day." He could do this by an exercise of his own power. Hut first there were hindrances to he removed : and this also has been effected by himself. "The sting of death is sin. and the strength of sin is the law." The dart which pierces us to the death is sin. *Be sure your sin will find you out"; "sin when it finished bringeth forth death." Our sins, returning on our selves, destroy our peace, jur life. And the law stands by and enforces this. It says: "The soul that sinneth it shall die"; "Whatsoever a man soweth that shall he aloi reap." The law says "It is ( just that sin should return upon the ; sinner." How. then, are we to escape? Fin'.- i dart must he turned aside; the law < must bo ratified by some substitute for 1 our death. And this bus been accom 1 plished by the la,rd Jesus. "Ho bare j our sins in his own body on the tree, —"being made a curse for us," He bat also sent forth his own Fpirit to form in !u the new spirit of obedience. The j piercing dart of sin has entered the soul I of our substitute: the law, too, i satis- I fied. And thus not onlv has life been 1 implanted in u, but our Deliverer has unlimited authority and power to 1 ike us from the grs-p of death and exalt us to life eternal. RAACTICSL SCGCESTIONS. 1. What occasion have we hero for de vout thanksgiving. Happy believer, whatever his present pain- and ills | 2. Elsewhere the Apostle tells tis(l'hil. 3 : s-10) that he himself willingly suf fered the loss of all thing- that lie might | know tlirist and tho power of bis | resum etior. Was ho not wise? 3. Could tho believer desire a better 1 support for his faith and zeal than is I here presented "Therefore be ye stead. 1 fast, unniovahle, always abounding in | the work of thi Lor I, f r.isnnn h as ye j know that your laf>or i not in vain in j the Lord." t. Let us be patient and glad, whether I life bo ehott or long. Here w. have 1 weakness and temptation, hut there t shall ho I "No sin to cloud, no lure to stay j The soul is on she springs."
