Senator Vest nml Delegate Magin
nis. of the Indian commission, return- |
<>d Wednesday from St. MaryV mission, ;
Hitter Root Valley. t the Flathead
agency, Missoula. Montana. The In
dians refused to sell i.nv |K)rtion of :
their reserve or to move to another ;
reset vat ion. They said they hud no
grievances, and were highly pleased
with their agent, Ronnn. All they j
desired was to keep whisky away trout
their young men. Ihe St. Jgnatiu.-
mission schools, also on the nerva
tion, were visited hv the comnii--ion.
The schools are well conducted by
Sisters of I'haritv and priests. Ahout
fiftv Indian girls and the same number
of Imvs are being educated, and tl.ey
show remarkable proficiency in the ,
dill",-rent classes. Senator \ e-t speak"
highly of teachers and nupi!-.
The council at St. Mary's mi-don
was rather dramatic. Charles, a Mat
head chief, with a few hundred In i
dinns, lias stendilv refits, d t" go upon
a reservation. '1 he Indians cultivate
a few rattehi -. hut in- steadily grow
ing poorer, and the v t.lev i- thickly
settled hv whites. The reservation
Indians and the whites want these
Indians removed to a reservation, to
avoid anticipated trouble. In the
council Senator Vest and Delegate
Maginnis sat opposite the chief.
Through nn interpreter S nator \ i-t
explained his mission.
Charlos who is a noted brave, gazed
dcliantly at the senator for a moment,
and then began his reply. He said:
"We are poor and weak. You want
to place your foot upon our neck and
grind our face in the dust. Hut 1 will
not go, I will go to the plains."
"Nez I'erces .loseph tried to go to
tho plains," broke in Senator \ est.
"There are no plains now. The whit
men are as thiek as leaves front ocean
to ocean, it you do not get a title to
your lands here, like white men, sol
diers will come some day and | la<
you upon a reservation."
"My hands and those of my people
are tree from the white man's blood,"
.-aid Charlos. "When the N-/. I'erees
came here we protected the whites.
Why dots the white man take his
heart from its now ' Tlu-n he took
oil' his hat, threw it upon the fl.—r,
stamped upon it and. with blazing
eyes gazing upon S-'tiat r Vest, shout
ed : "You may take Charlos to a
reservation, hut there will b- t. > breath
in his nostrils ' Cltarh - will he dead,
lie will never go there alive."
Senator Yc-t answered tie- tawny
chieftain, in language as emphatic us
his own.otliat he must nln-v the white
man's daw as implicitly us did tin

was greatly avcr-e to this business, and
he had to tic exempted from it. Fpou
one occasion—it will be easily rcuiein

—a soldier who had gone to the war
came hack to find that a preacher had
led his wife astray, lie announced
that he would kill the violator • i his
family,and when the offending preach
er crossed his path tho threat was exe
cuted. 'lhe offender was tried, con
victed of premeditated murder and
sentenced to he hanged. All other
relief tailing, a pardon was applied
for to the governor.
It happened that on the evening ct
for the hearing of tlm ae Governor
Curt in received word of a battle and,
after his custom, he desired to go to
the front and look after Pennsylvania's
wounded. The pardon ease, and con
sideration for the counsel coming on
to nrgue it, claimed his presence at
Harris burg. Hesitating between his
conflicting dutiiw, he reluctantly asked
his attorney general to depart from
fiis rule and hear the case. Mr. Mere

"Hut my dear governor, before you ;

what my principal would do in the
matter." "Oh," rejoiued Curtin, "you ,

it is related by one of the counsel

assented to it the counsel for the pris
